WordPress’s built-in personal-data erasure tool does not delete registered user accounts. To let people “delete my account” themselves, add a separate self-service account-deletion control—using a plugin or custom development—and decide what happens to their content and related data before enabling it.
Account deletion and personal-data erasure are different
The administrator-facing privacy workflow is at Tools > Erase Personal Data. A person submits a request using an email address; WordPress validates the request by email and sends it to an administrator for approval. After confirmation, the requested WordPress personal data is permanently removed from the database and the action cannot be reversed. This workflow does not automatically delete the registered account, and it does not necessarily cover backups, archives, or data held by third parties. WordPress’s Erase Personal Data documentation explains the process. The developer handbook is explicit: “It does NOT delete registered user accounts – that is still a separate step the admin can choose whether or not to do.” (WordPress Plugin Handbook.)

So, if your goal is to allow users to delete their own accounts, treat account closure as a separate feature. It may be part of a privacy request, but a delete-account button alone does not establish that every personal-data erasure obligation has been completed.

Deleting a WordPress user raises a practical choice: remove the user’s authored content or keep it and assign it to another user. WordPress’s user-management guidance describes both options. The deletion function, wp_delete_user(), can reassign posts and links; if no reassignment user is supplied, the posts are deleted. Review the content consequences before offering self-service deletion, especially if posts, comments, media, or other records are important to the site.

- Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable

For administrator-managed deletion, WordPress documents the procedure in its user-management guide. That screen does not let the currently logged-in administrator delete their own account. For technical details on the function’s behavior, see the WordPress developer reference.
Ways to add self-service account deletion
| Approach | Who initiates it | What to plan |
|---|---|---|
| WordPress administrator deletion | An administrator | Choose whether content is deleted or reassigned; this is not a self-service control. |
| Account-deletion plugin | The user, if the configured plugin supports the workflow | Check confirmation, role restrictions, content handling, plugin-data cleanup, and compatibility on the current listing and your own site. |
| Custom development | The user through a site-built workflow | Use WordPress deletion APIs carefully, implement authorization and confirmation, and explicitly handle plugin and external data. |
Use a plugin
One example is ByeUser – Self Service Account Deletion. Its WordPress.org listing describes front-end account deletion through a shortcode or profile page, confirmation options that include JavaScript confirmation or password re-entry, role restrictions, and WooCommerce account support. These are claims in the listing, not independently verified results; review the current listing and test the workflow with your theme, plugins, and user roles before making it available.

- Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
- Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
- To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
- This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
- The available storage capacity may vary.
Confirm what the plugin actually deletes and whether it handles content reassignment or deletion, plugin-specific data, and any connected services you use. A front-end button does not by itself prove that every data store is covered.

Build a custom workflow
A developer can create a self-service control around WordPress’s deletion APIs. The documented wp_delete_user() function removes a user and supports content reassignment. The workflow still needs safeguards: verify that the request comes from the account holder, ask for clear confirmation before an irreversible action, and define the content disposition and cleanup behavior. Sites with custom tables, complex roles, or many integrations may need bespoke cleanup beyond WordPress’s core user deletion.

Understand site-level and network-level deletion
On WordPress Multisite, removing a user from one site is not necessarily the same as removing them from the whole network. The wp_delete_user() function removes the user from the current site rather than deleting the account from the network database. WP-CLI behaves similarly by default: wp user delete removes the user from the current site, while --network requests network-level removal. The CLI also supports --reassign=<user-id> for content reassignment. Check the intended scope and content consequences before using network-level removal. See the WP-CLI user delete command reference.

Check data and policy implications before launch
- Authored content: Decide whether posts and links are deleted or reassigned, and communicate that outcome before confirmation.
- Plugin data: Check whether plugins store user information in their own tables or systems. Plugins can register personal-data eraser callbacks, but coverage depends on each plugin’s implementation.
- External services: Review connected services such as mailing lists, commerce systems, analytics, or identity providers. WordPress’s erasure workflow may not remove information held outside the site.
- Backups and archives: Establish what happens to copies outside the live database. The core erasure tool does not automatically clear backups or archives.
- Records you must retain: Identify any records that need to be kept under your applicable policies or obligations, and make the scope and process clear to the person requesting closure.
- Confirmation and support: Make the action unmistakable and irreversible, verify the requester in a way appropriate to your site, and provide a way to resolve mistaken or disputed requests. WordPress’s privacy-request workflow uses email validation and administrator approval; a self-service workflow needs safeguards suited to its own risks.
