Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteFull Keyboard Access lets you move focus through macOS menus, dialog controls, buttons, and other interactive elements using only the keyboard. On macOS Sonoma, it’s controlled from Accessibility settings and affects how the system routes keyboard events to UI elements.
If you’re using a keyboard for accessibility, productivity, or when a pointing device isn’t practical, enabling it correctly matters. The difference between “focus rings” that appear and “controls you can actually activate” often comes down to the exact options Sonoma provides.

Full Keyboard Access changes keyboard focus behavior so interactive UI elements can be reached without using the mouse. In practice, it helps you tab (and use related keys) to move through:
#1 Best Overall
- Magic Keyboard is available with Touch ID, providing fast, easy and secure authentication for logins and to unlock your Mac.
- Magic Keyboard with Touch ID and Numeric Keypad delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
- It features an extended layout, with document navigation controls for quick scrolling and full-size arrow keys, which are great for gaming.
- The numeric keypad is also ideal for spreadsheets and finance applications.
- It’s wireless and features a rechargeable battery that will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
- Buttons, toggles, and form fields in dialogs
- Menu items and some menu bar interactions
- Toolbar and other control clusters that may otherwise require pointer focus
- System UI elements where focus management is available
Sonoma’s accessibility layer then handles activation (for example, pressing Return or Space depending on the control) once focus lands on the element you need.
Prerequisites and what you’ll need
You don’t need any special hardware beyond a functional keyboard. Still, two practical checks reduce troubleshooting time:
- Confirm you’re on macOS Sonoma (14.x): Open System Settings → General → About and verify the macOS version. The steps below match the Sonoma UI.
- Know your “activate” key: Many controls activate with Return, Space, or a specific shortcut. If Space doesn’t work, try Return (and vice versa).
If you use a third-party keyboard or keyboard remapping tool, temporarily disable remaps that conflict with Tab/arrow behavior.

In Sonoma, you’ll find Full Keyboard Access under Accessibility → Keyboard. The exact wording can vary slightly by Sonoma minor release, but the path and intent are consistent.
Turn it on for the current user
- Open System Settings.
- Go to Accessibility in the left sidebar.
- Under Accessibility, select Keyboard.
- Find the section for Full Keyboard Access.
- Set Full Keyboard Access to On.
After you toggle it on, try focusing something interactive in a dialog (for example, open a Preferences window or a confirmation dialog) and use keyboard navigation to see whether focus highlights appear.
Choose the right focus behavior (buttons, menus, and more)
Sonoma typically offers additional options that affect how broadly focus can move. The two behaviors you’ll most often care about are:
- All controls (or the closest equivalent): focus can reach more UI elements like buttons and other interactive controls.
- Text boxes and lists only (or similar): focus stays narrower, which may be helpful if you find it distracting.
If the option is available in your Sonoma build, start with All controls. If it causes unexpected focus jumps in certain apps, switch to the narrower option and test again.

- Magic Keyboard is available with Touch ID, providing fast, easy and secure authentication for logins and to unlock your Mac.
- Magic Keyboard with Touch ID delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
- It’s also wireless and rechargeable, with an incredibly long-lasting internal battery that will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
- It pairs automatically with your Mac, so you can get to work right away.
- It features a USB-C port and includes a woven USB-C Charge Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.
Use the keyboard shortcut to toggle it
macOS provides a shortcut to toggle Full Keyboard Access. By default, it’s commonly bound to Control (⌃) + F7.
- Press Control + F7 to toggle Full Keyboard Access on or off.
- Watch for a visible change (focus rings, focus navigation behavior) and confirm in an interactive window.
If the shortcut doesn’t work, it may have been remapped by an accessibility setting, keyboard utility, or system-level shortcut configuration.
How focus navigation works (and what you should expect)
Once enabled, Sonoma routes keyboard navigation through focusable elements. The experience depends on the type of UI element and the app’s accessibility implementation.
Typical navigation keys
Expect combinations similar to the following:
- Tab: move forward to the next focusable control
- Shift + Tab: move backward to the previous focusable control
- Arrow keys: often move within menus, lists, and certain control groups
- Return or Space: activate the focused button/control
Some apps interpret keys differently (especially complex web apps), so activation may require trying Return vs. Space.
How dialogs and menus behave
Dialogs typically expose the most consistent focus order: buttons (like OK, Cancel), toggles, and fields appear in a logical sequence. Menu bars may require additional keyboard steps:
- Open menus with the keyboard (often via shortcuts)
- Use arrow keys to move within a menu
- Select with Return
If a menu item can’t be focused, test the same action in a different app to determine whether it’s an OS-level issue or an app-specific accessibility gap.
Verify it’s working
Use a repeatable test so you know the setting is functioning, not just “almost working.”

Common gotchas in Sonoma
Focus won’t move
When Tab does nothing, it’s usually one of three things: a conflicting shortcut, focus is locked inside a control, or your chosen Full Keyboard Access behavior is set too narrowly.
Try toggling the setting using Control + F7 and test again in a dialog.
Buttons/menu items still aren’t reachable
Some UI elements aren’t fully exposed as focusable controls in every app. Full Keyboard Access improves coverage, but it can’t force an app to implement accessibility roles correctly.
If the issue is limited to one app, test the same navigation pattern in another. That quickly isolates app vs. OS.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFull Keyboard Access changes don’t stick
If the setting appears to revert, check for multiple user profiles and confirm you’re editing the current account’s Accessibility settings. Also ensure you didn’t enable a temporary keyboard profile or automation tool that reconfigures accessibility options.
Only some apps behave correctly
Third-party apps and embedded web views differ in how they expose focusable elements. Even if macOS is configured correctly, an app might not support keyboard focus navigation the same way.

- - It’s also wireless and rechargeable, with an incredibly long-lasting internal battery that will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges.
- - It pairs automatically with your Mac, so you can get to work right away.
- - System Requirements: Mac with Apple silicon using macOS 11.4 or later.
- QWERTY (Standard)
For web-based UIs inside apps or the browser, compare behavior in Safari vs. another site/app to see whether the app’s accessibility layer is the limiter.
Troubleshooting checklist (when it fails)
If enabling Full Keyboard Access doesn’t produce the expected focus navigation, work through this checklist in order. Each step resolves a common failure mode without needing guesswork.
Step-by-step recovery
- Confirm the setting is actually On: Re-check System Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard → Full Keyboard Access.
- Toggle it off, then back on: Use Control + F7 twice and retry focus navigation.
- Test in a system dialog: For example, open a dialog inside System Settings or another native macOS UI so you’re not fighting app-specific issues.
- Restart the app (not necessarily the Mac): If only one app is affected, quit and reopen it to refresh its accessibility tree.
- Check for shortcut conflicts: If you use keyboard remapping software, temporarily disable it and retest Tab navigation.
- Restart the Mac: If focus routing is stuck systemwide, a reboot clears stale accessibility states.
- Update macOS: If you’re on an early Sonoma 14.x build, install the latest updates from System Settings → General → Software Update.
If none of these changes restore focus movement, the most likely scenario is an app-specific accessibility limitation. In that case, try a different app for the workflow you need (or use a more accessible alternative view within the same app).

Full Keyboard Access targets keyboard focus and activation. Depending on your needs, you may also want related settings.
Keyboard navigation vs. Voice Control / VoiceOver
If you need speech interaction rather than purely keyboard focus, consider:
- Voice Control for spoken commands
- VoiceOver for spoken descriptions plus keyboard-based navigation
These tools can complement Full Keyboard Access, but they’re not replacements. VoiceOver, for instance, changes how items are announced and navigated and may be more suitable for reading and complex page structures.
Switch Control and AssistiveTouch considerations
If you use a single switch or need pointer-like assistance without a precise mouse, consider:
Best Value
- WIRELESS, RECHARGEABLE CONVENIENCE - Magic Keyboard with Touch ID connects wirelessly to your Mac via Bluetooth. And the rechargeable internal battery means no loose batteries to replace.
- WORKS WITH ANY MAC WITH APPLE SILICON - It pairs automatically with your Mac with Apple silicon so you can get to work right away. See the list of compatible devices above. Requires a Mac with Apple silicon using macOS 11.4 or later.
- ENHANCED TYPING EXPERIENCE - Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience.
- QUICK UNLOCK WITH TOUCH ID - Touch ID gives you a fast, easy, secure way to unlock your Mac and sign in to apps and sites.
- GO WEEKS WITHOUT CHARGING - The incredibly long-lasting internal battery will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges. (Battery life varies by use.) Comes with a woven USB-C to Lightning Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB-C port on your Mac.
- Switch Control for scanning and selection
- AssistiveTouch for on-screen control gestures
Full Keyboard Access is still useful even in those setups because many controls can be reached faster with Tab/Return than by scanning.
FAQs
Does Full Keyboard Access work with every app on macOS Sonoma?
Most native macOS UI behaves well, but third-party apps vary. If an app doesn’t expose accessible controls properly, Full Keyboard Access can’t create focusable targets out of thin air.
What’s the fastest way to test whether it’s enabled?
Open a dialog with multiple controls (like a Preferences window), then use Tab and Shift + Tab to confirm focus moves and Return activates a button.
Tab isn’t working—what should I try first?
Confirm Full Keyboard Access is On, toggle it with Control + F7, and test in a system dialog first. If it works in system UI but not one app, that points to an app-specific accessibility issue.
Can I use Full Keyboard Access with an external keyboard and a MacBook?
Yes. External keyboards typically work the same way, but if you’re using a keyboard layout or mapping tool, check that Tab isn’t remapped to something else.
Will enabling Full Keyboard Access affect my mouse usage?
No. It primarily changes keyboard focus routing. You can still use the mouse normally, but you may notice different focus outlines when you switch between mouse and keyboard input.
Bottom Line
To allow Full Keyboard Access on Mac in macOS Sonoma, go to System Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard, turn Full Keyboard Access On, and pick the broader focus option if available. Then verify with a real dialog test using Tab and Return.
