Matplotlib y-axis tick labels are text objects, so you can set their horizontal and vertical alignment directly. For a fixed plot, get the labels with ax.get_yticklabels() and set the alignment on each label.
Set alignment on the current y-axis labels
For labels on the left side of an axes, right alignment is the usual choice: each label ends at its tick anchor and extends away from the plot. Vertical alignment controls how the text sits vertically around that anchor.

for label in ax.get_yticklabels():
label.set_horizontalalignment("right")
label.set_verticalalignment("center")
To place labels on the right side so their text extends away from the plot, use "left" for horizontal alignment instead. Choose the vertical alignment that matches the placement you want; "center" centers the label vertically on its tick.
The Matplotlib alignment example demonstrates setting horizontal alignment on individual tick-label text objects: Align tick labels. The Axis.set_ticklabels API documents horizontal and vertical alignment among the available text properties.

Choose the method that fits your plot
| Method | Best for | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
ax.get_yticklabels() and text alignment methods |
Precise horizontal or vertical alignment of the current labels. | Applies to current tick-label objects; changing limits or autoscaling can replace or modify tick instances. |
ax.tick_params(axis="y", ...) |
General tick styling, such as label size, color, rotation, visibility, and padding. | It does not provide a general horizontal- or vertical-alignment option. |
ax.set_yticklabels(...) |
Setting label text properties when tick locations and corresponding labels are deliberately fixed. | Matplotlib discourages routine use because the method depends on tick positions. Fix positions first and provide matching labels. |
ytick.alignment rcParam |
Setting a global default for y-tick label alignment. | It is a global configuration setting, rather than a targeted per-label adjustment; the documented default is center_baseline. |
For direct text control, edit the returned Text objects. For bulk styling, use tick_params. The Axis ticks guide recommends tick_params for simpler styling of ticks and labels.
Use set_yticklabels only with fixed tick positions
ax.set_yticklabels(...) can accept text properties such as horizontal and vertical alignment, but it is not the preferred way to adjust alignment alone. If you need to use it, set the tick positions first with ax.set_yticks(...) or a FixedLocator, then supply labels that correspond to those positions. Otherwise, tick positions may change while the labels do not match.

Account for changing ticks in interactive plots
Matplotlib may create, delete, or modify tick instances as limits and autoscaling change. Consequently, alignment changes made only to the current label objects are suitable for fixed or static plots, but they are not a guarantee that the styling will persist as an interactive view changes. The Matplotlib development team cautions in its Axis ticks guide: “Working with tick instances should only be an option of last resort and requires careful handling to not accidentally overwrite any manual changes through this mechanism.”

Separate alignment from crowding and clipping
Alignment changes how text sits relative to its tick anchor; it does not by itself solve every layout problem. If labels overlap or run into the figure edge, adjust the property that addresses the cause:

- Labels overlap: use rotation or adjust the rotation mode;
tick_paramssupports tick-label rotation. See the tick-label rotation example. - Labels sit too close to the axis: change their padding with
tick_params(axis="y", pad=...). - Labels are clipped by the figure boundary: use constrained layout to reserve space for axes labels and tick labels.
These settings address rotation, distance, and available figure space respectively; none is a substitute for setting text alignment when the alignment itself is wrong.
