There is no research-backed number of gaming hours that works for every couple. A fair agreement starts by naming the moments that feel hurtful, protecting time to connect, and making a gaming schedule together—not by treating one partner’s hobby as automatically wrong or the other’s feelings as unreasonable.
Start with the moment that leaves you feeling ignored
Bring it up when neither of you is in the middle of a game or an argument. Describe what happened, how it affected you, and what you would like to change. For example: “When I try to tell you something while you’re playing and don’t get a response, I feel shut out. Can we set aside time when we’re both available?” This is a practical example, not a script tested in research.

Be specific about the experience: a conversation that keeps getting interrupted, a plan that was canceled, or too little time when both of you are paying attention. “You care more about games than me” turns the conversation into a debate about motives; an observable example gives you something concrete to solve.

Ask what each of you needs from the arrangement
Gaming may be relaxation, competition, social connection, or a commitment to teammates. Ask what it provides for the person who plays. Then ask the other partner what feeling considered would look like in daily life: uninterrupted conversation, a regular evening together, more notice about late sessions, or follow-through on shared responsibilities.

A 2012 clinical review of video games in couple relationships recommends examining how included or excluded each partner feels. That is a useful way to frame a conversation, not a validated self-help script. The authors also note that gaming is not a relationship problem for every couple and that the literature has limitations. Read Hertlein and Hawkins’s 2012 review.
Build a schedule both partners helped make
Once you understand the needs involved, put the agreement in visible, practical terms. The goal is not to grant permission or impose a unilateral cap; it is to make leisure, shared time, and responsibilities predictable.

- Give notice about fixed commitments: If a session has a team commitment or may run late, agree how much notice is reasonable and what happens to shared plans.
- Decide how to reconnect: If a conversation starts during a match, agree whether the player can finish the match first and when you will return to the conversation. Urgent needs should not be left waiting.
- Set a review date: Choose a time to check whether the arrangement feels fair to both of you and revise it if needed.
These are planning ideas, not a formula shown to improve outcomes in a study. Their value is whether both people can follow them and feel they had a real say.

Couples often ask, “How much gaming is too much in a relationship?” The sources discussed here do not establish a universal weekly limit or a research-validated number of hours. A cap can miss the point if it leaves one partner feeling ignored during the time they do share; equally, a schedule that preserves couple time but repeatedly disrupts the gamer’s agreed commitments may not feel workable.

At your check-in, consider whether plans are being kept, protected time is actually happening, responsibilities are covered, and either person feels ignored, controlled, or perpetually on call. A timer or tracking app cannot decide whether an arrangement is considerate. If a term is not working, adjust it together rather than turning the review into a tally of who is at fault.
What the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you
The evidence is limited and comes from studies published in 2012 and a U.S. survey conducted in 2019, so it can add context but cannot dictate your couple’s schedule.

- Conflict is not proof that gaming causes harm: A 2012 study of 1,333 heterosexual couples found that, among men in its sample, time spent gaming was associated with greater conflict over media time and content; media conflict was in turn associated with physical and relational aggression. These are associations in that sample, not proof that gaming caused conflict or aggression, and they do not describe every couple. The study did not establish an appropriate time limit. View the study record at BYU ScholarsArchive.
- Some partnered adults reported being bothered by gaming time: In Pew Research Center’s online survey of 4,860 U.S. adults, conducted October 16–28, 2019, 15% of partnered respondents said they were at least sometimes bothered by how much time their partner spent playing video games. This is historical, U.S.-specific survey data—not a 2026 estimate or a measure of relationship harm. Read Pew’s 2020 report.
- Digital distraction is a separate issue: In the same survey, 51% of partnered U.S. adults said their partner was at least sometimes distracted by a cellphone while they tried to talk. That figure concerns cellphones, not gaming; it should not be combined with the video-game measure.
When a schedule may not be enough
If repeated conversations go nowhere, shared responsibilities are routinely neglected, or gaming continues despite serious consequences, the disagreement may need support beyond scheduling. High playtime alone does not establish an addiction, and the studies above do not provide a diagnostic test or a threshold for when a couple should seek help. A qualified relationship or mental-health professional may help if the conflict is persistent. If either partner feels intimidated or unsafe, prioritize immediate safety and appropriate local support.
