The fastest sustainable way to get Minecraft players is to make the server worth joining before you promote it: keep it active at predictable times, describe its gameplay accurately, list it on several server directories, add automated voting rewards, and retain players in a Discord community. This guide gives you a practical promotion system, from preparing your listing and choosing categories to configuring voting, creating content, measuring results, and fixing the common reasons a server stays empty.

Make the server ready before you advertise
Promotion can deliver a first visit, but the server experience determines whether that visit becomes a regular player. A new player who joins while nobody is online may leave before the world finishes loading. Begin broad promotion when your server has life during the hours you promise to be active.
Set reliable activity hours
Choose several recurring time blocks when an owner, moderator, or a dependable group of players will be online. Put those hours in every listing and in Discord. A smaller server with a predictable evening session is easier to join than a larger server that appears empty at random times.

- Publish a time zone, such as UTC, rather than “evenings.”
- Schedule a weekly event or build session so prospective players know when to expect activity.
- Ask existing members to join together during the first weeks of promotion.
- Do not advertise a player count, event, or feature that is not actually available.
Give the server a specific reason to exist
Replace vague claims such as “the best survival server” with a concise description of the actual experience. A useful pattern is “survival with economy, claims and weekly events.” Name the game mode, progression system, community style, and any unusual feature a player will encounter in the first session.
Get version and edition details right
State the supported Minecraft version or version range, Java or Bedrock edition, and the connection address. If Bedrock players can join through a cross-play setup, explain that plainly and include the Bedrock port when your setup requires one. A player who connects with the wrong edition or version can leave immediately, and a directory listing with inaccurate compatibility information creates avoidable negative impressions.

Your server-list entry is often judged before a player reads the full description. Write an MOTD that communicates the current reason to join, for example, “Season 3 has started — new players welcome!” Use a clear, recognizable icon; one commonly specified directory format is 64×64 pixels. Make sure the icon remains legible at small sizes and does not imply a feature your server does not offer.
Run a new-player test
Use a fresh account or ask somebody unfamiliar with the server to follow the public instructions. Time how long it takes to connect, understand the rules, find the first activity, and meet another player. Fix confusing prompts, broken links, missing resource packs, excessive starting permissions, and spawn areas that do not explain what to do next.
Prepare one accurate listing package
Creating a consistent information package prevents errors when you submit to multiple directories. Keep the following details in a document so every listing uses the same current values.

Review this package whenever you change the address, supported version, game mode, season, or schedule. Update every directory on the same day. A stale listing is worse than a short listing because it sets expectations the server cannot meet.

Submit the server to multiple Minecraft server lists
Directories provide discovery from players who are already looking for a server. A 2026 guide recommends starting with ListMC, MC Companion, MC.GAME, Minecraft Servers List, MinecraftRankings, and Crafty. Treat that as a starting set rather than a permanent ranking: directory traffic, rules, moderation, and category names change.

Choose the closest category
Select the category that describes the actual primary experience, such as survival, economy, skyblock, factions, minigames, or modded. Do not place a small feature in a misleading category just to appear in a busier search. If a directory allows multiple tags, use only tags that a new player can experience immediately.
Use the same facts everywhere
Enter the same address, version, edition, modes, and activity schedule on every site. Keep the first sentence distinctive enough to identify your server, but do not change factual details between listings. Consistency helps returning players recognize the entry and makes it easier to diagnose whether a listing or the server itself is causing a problem.
Check requirements, fees, and moderation rules
Before submitting, read the directory’s current help and submission pages. For reference, help sections are available at minecraft-serverlist.com/help and minecraftservers.org/help. Requirements may cover server uptime, ownership verification, prohibited content, image dimensions, voting behavior, or paid placement. Do not assume one site’s rules apply to another, and recheck them after a major directory redesign.

Record the login or ownership method, listing URL, category, date submitted, and last update in a private spreadsheet. Add a reminder to check each entry after a version change or seasonal reset. Remove obsolete listings rather than leaving an address that no longer works.
Build a Minecraft server voting system
Voting gives an interested player a repeatable way to support the server and gives you a reason to bring them back. A vote normally starts on a server-list page: the player enters a username, completes that site’s check, and the list sends a vote notification to the server. A vote-listener plugin then grants the configured reward in game.
Install and test a vote listener
Guides consistently name NuVotifier as the common plugin for receiving vote notifications. Install the version compatible with your server software, follow its configuration instructions, and connect each directory using the method that directory documents. Test with a staff account before announcing rewards. Confirm that the reward arrives once, is logged, and is still delivered if the player is offline when the notification arrives.
Never assume that installing a listener automatically connects every list. Each site may require a token, public key, callback address, or an approval step. Keep those credentials private and rotate them if you suspect they were exposed.

Choose rewards that encourage, not distort, play
Use a small, repeatable reward such as a crate key, modest in-game currency, or a cosmetic item. Rewards should make voting feel worthwhile without making non-voters feel unable to compete. Publish the exact reward, cooldown, and any daily limit in your rules. Avoid rewards that can be traded for overwhelming combat or economic advantages unless your server is designed around that balance.
Make voting easy to find
- Add a
/votecommand that displays every current voting link and the available reward. - Put the same links on the website, Discord welcome channel, and server guide.
- Explain the steps in plain language: open a list, enter the exact username, complete its check, then return to the server.
- Show a confirmation message and a public or personal vote streak only if your plugin can verify it reliably.
Expect different rules on different lists
Vote limits, reset schedules, identity checks, and eligibility differ by directory and can change without notice. One list may reset votes for all servers on the first day of each month, while another may allow a player to vote for up to three different servers per day. Verify the current rule on each site before promising a reward or streak. Do not describe one site’s limit as a universal Minecraft rule.
Handle the Bedrock voting problem
Some voting sites do not accept the leading “*” used by certain Bedrock usernames. A Bedrock player may therefore be able to join your server but unable to complete a vote on that list. Test voting with an actual Bedrock account, document which lists work, and offer a non-voting way to participate in events or earn community recognition. Never ask players to alter an account name or bypass a site’s validation.
Use Discord to turn visits into a community
A listing can create a first session; a community gives players a reason to return between sessions. Put the Discord invite in each directory entry and in the MOTD, provided your server’s rules and the directory permit it.

- Welcome and rules: explain verification, conduct, support, and where to start in game.
- Announcements: publish launches, maintenance, resets, and event times in one place.
- General chat: give players a low-friction place to meet before joining.
- Support: collect bug reports and player questions without exposing private information.
- Suggestions: let the community propose changes and show which ideas are being considered.
Assign moderation responsibilities and define how reports are handled. A quiet, well-moderated Discord is more useful than a large server full of unread channels.
Connect Discord activity to in-game activity
Announce the regular play schedule in advance, post screenshots of completed builds, and ask members to form groups for events. Welcome new arrivals by name when practical, then point them to the first activity rather than leaving them to search. Referral rewards can turn regular players into recruiters, but state eligibility and anti-abuse rules clearly.
Promote beyond server directories
Post on Reddit only where permitted
Some communities, including r/mcservers and r/MinecraftBuddies, accept server posts on specified days or under particular formats. Read the current rules before posting; requirements may cover title structure, screenshots, age ratings, flair, bumping, and how often you may repost. Write a post that explains the player experience and schedule instead of pasting the same advertisement repeatedly.

Create short video demonstrations
A 20-second TikTok or YouTube Short can show a dramatic build, a minigame round, a seasonal launch, or a funny community moment faster than a paragraph can. Open with the visual payoff, add the server’s distinctive feature as text, and finish with the edition, active time, and a single destination such as Discord. Do not imply that footage represents a feature or player population that is not available.

Approach streamers and YouTubers professionally
Identify creators whose audience already enjoys your game mode. Send a concise message with the server’s concept, version, available recording times, moderation contact, and what you can offer, such as event access or an agreed in-game perk. Never require a creator to make a positive claim, hide sponsorship terms, or expose private player information. A small creator whose viewers match your server is often a better fit than a large but unrelated channel.
Delay paid advertising until the funnel works
Paid ads can send more visitors, but they cannot fix an empty spawn, inaccurate compatibility details, or an inactive Discord. First confirm that listings produce joins, voting works, and new arrivals can find a group during your advertised hours. Then run a small, time-limited campaign with one message and one destination. Stop or revise it if visits rise but completed joins and returning players do not.

No universal player-acquisition number tells you which channel will work for your server. Establish your own baseline and change one variable at a time.
Track the full path
- Discovery: views, clicks, or post reach where the platform provides them.
- Join: first-time connections during the campaign window.
- Activation: players who complete a meaningful first action, such as joining an event, claiming land, or meeting another player.
- Return: players who come back on a later scheduled session.
- Community: Discord joins, verified members, and useful participation.
- Voting: completed votes and successful reward deliveries, separated by directory.
Use distinct invite links or campaign codes when a platform permits them. Otherwise, ask new players how they found you and record the answer consistently. Compare channels over the same number of active sessions, not just one unusually busy day.
Run simple weekly experiments
Change one listing headline, screenshot, schedule explanation, or video opening for a week. Keep the address, version, category, and reward unchanged so the result is interpretable. Record the change, dates, joins, first-session activations, and returning players. Keep a change that improves qualified arrivals; revert one that increases clicks but produces confused or short visits.
Fix the “Minecraft server not getting players” problems
People join and leave immediately
- Check that the advertised version and edition match the connection settings.
- Ask a new player what they expected from the description and MOTD.
- Place clear first steps at spawn and make the first activity possible without a large group.
- Schedule a host or regular players to greet arrivals.
The server appears empty
Concentrate promotion around your dependable activity hours instead of spreading it across the entire day. Announce a recurring event, coordinate existing players, and update listings with the real schedule. Do not buy more traffic until a visitor can reliably find another person online.
Listings receive views but few joins
Inspect the first line, icon, category, address, and compatibility label. Replace generic hype with a specific mode and current event. Have someone unfamiliar with the server follow the listing from a phone and a desktop to catch broken buttons, incorrect ports, or confusing instructions.
Players vote but do not return
Verify that the reward is delivered promptly and that its value is understood. A voting system should support a good session, not substitute for one. Connect the reward to a scheduled activity, show the next event in the confirmation message, and remove broken or inaccessible voting links.
Discord joins but nobody participates
Reduce channel clutter, make the welcome instructions actionable, and post a specific next event rather than generic announcements. Have a moderator greet newcomers and answer questions. If the server cannot sustain conversation between sessions, focus on a smaller active group before promoting the invite more widely.
A directory rejects or removes the listing
Read that site’s current help and moderation message, correct the stated issue, and contact its support channel if an appeal is available. Common preventable causes include stale addresses, prohibited claims, wrong categories, missing ownership verification, and failing image or content requirements. Do not create duplicate entries to evade a decision.
A practical 30-day promotion plan
Days 1–7: prepare
- Set activity hours and recruit a dependable opening group.
- Test Java and Bedrock connection paths that you intend to support.
- Rewrite the description, MOTD, icon, rules, and first-time spawn instructions.
- Create the Discord structure and publish the schedule.
- Prepare a consistent listing package and record every final value.
Days 8–14: publish and test
- Submit to the selected directories using the closest categories.
- Read each site’s current requirements, fees, vote limits, and reset terms.
- Install and test NuVotifier or another compatible vote listener.
- Add
/vote, links, and a modest reward; test with Java and Bedrock accounts where applicable. - Invite existing players to a scheduled event and observe the new-player experience.
Days 15–21: add community promotion
- Publish rule-compliant posts in the most relevant Reddit communities.

- Contact a small number of well-matched creators with a clear, honest proposal.
- Offer a transparent referral reward and monitor for abuse.
Days 22–30: evaluate and refine
- Compare discovery, joins, first-session actions, returns, Discord participation, and votes by source.
- Fix the largest drop-off before buying additional reach.
- Update stale directory entries and remove links that no longer work.
- Choose one listing or content experiment for the next week and document the result.
Keep promotion accurate and sustainable
Directory policies, voting limits, fees, and supported identity formats can change. Recheck the rules before each campaign and after a site redesign. Follow the current terms of every directory, social platform, and subreddit you use. Keep player privacy and moderation standards consistent across the server, Discord, and promotional content.
The durable loop is straightforward: an active server earns a clear listing; the listing brings a first session; a helpful onboarding flow leads to Discord; reliable voting and events create return visits; and returning players make future promotion more effective. Build and verify each link in that loop before paying for more exposure.
