Include AI models, agents, integrations, data, and supply-chain components—not just conventional servers and applications.
What exposure management means in an AI environment
Exposure management is an operating practice for understanding what an organization exposes, determining whether each exposure is necessary, and reducing the risks that remain. It is broader than a vulnerability scan: an exposed service may be vulnerable, misconfigured, unsupported, or simply reachable when it does not need to be.

AI extends the inventory and the threat model. In addition to internet-facing infrastructure, account for production and internal AI applications, custom agents, third-party integrations, models, the software and hardware they depend on, and the data used for training or produced as output. NIST describes familiar confidentiality, integrity, and availability risks alongside AI-related concerns such as evasion, model extraction, membership inference, and availability attacks. Its security guidance notes that existing guidance does not yet address all AI-specific concerns comprehensively. NIST’s AI security and resilience guidance
The practical objective is not to eliminate every exposure. Some services must be reachable to support the business. The objective is to know what is exposed, justify what remains accessible, and reduce avoidable risk without disrupting essential services.

Adopt it as a repeatable operating cycle
1. Establish scope and ownership
Assign responsibility across security, IT, cloud, application, data, and AI teams. Define which environments and systems are in scope, including employee-facing applications when they connect to organizational systems or data. Make sure teams responsible for AI deployments and integrations participate; otherwise, an inventory limited to infrastructure may miss important attack paths.
2. Build an inventory that connects assets to dependencies
Begin with internet-accessible assets, then connect them to relevant software, cloud, identity, data, and AI-system records. Include models and components where relevant. An inventory is more useful when it shows not only what is exposed, but also who owns it, what it supports, what it depends on, and what information it can access.
Gartner recommends mapping the expanded AI application attack surface, including custom agents, integrations, and employee applications. Its guidance also calls for comprehensive software inventories and software and AI bills of materials. NIST’s AI security material highlights risks involving training and output data, software, and hardware. Gartner’s June 2026 threat guidance
3. Decide which exposures are necessary
For each internet-facing service, record its operational purpose and whether public access is required. Restrict or remove access that is not needed. Before changing exposure, check dependencies and coordinate with service owners so a security change does not interrupt an essential workflow. CISA’s Internet Exposure Reduction Guidance recommends identifying exposed assets, reducing unnecessary exposure, and conducting routine assessments.

4. Prioritize in business and threat context
Do not let a raw list of findings dictate remediation order. Consider the importance of the asset, how it is exposed, the threat information available, the data or capabilities at risk, and the organization’s ability to respond. This is a practical way to apply the sources’ emphasis on routine assessment, threat signals, and context-aware telemetry; it is not a universal scoring formula.
For systems that must remain accessible, CISA recommends changing default passwords, applying security patches, replacing unsupported products, using monitored jump hosts, monitoring ingress and egress traffic, and implementing multifactor authentication where possible. Choose mitigations appropriate to the system and validate that they do not break necessary access.
5. Build AI security into development and runtime operations
For AI applications, Gartner recommends secure development lifecycle practices, threat modeling, data classification, purpose-based access controls, and runtime monitoring. Prompt injection deserves attention during development and operation: test for it, validate inputs, monitor behavior, and apply runtime controls. These controls should reflect what an application or agent can actually do—for example, which data it can retrieve and which tools or actions it can invoke.

6. Reassess on a cadence and after meaningful change
Set a routine assessment schedule, then reassess when a change could alter exposure: a new public service, AI deployment, integration, or infrastructure change. CISA notes that continuous assessment can help identify new exposures as IT environments evolve. The cadence should be frequent enough to reflect the pace of change in your organization.

AI systems inherit the risks of ordinary software and infrastructure, while adding concerns tied to model behavior, data, and new ways of connecting systems. NIST’s Adversarial Machine Learning: A Taxonomy and Terminology of Attacks and Mitigations, published March 24, 2025, organizes terminology around machine-learning methods, lifecycle stages, and attacker goals, objectives, capabilities, and knowledge. It can support a shared vocabulary, but it does not replace an organization-specific threat model.
Gartner’s June 2, 2026 public guidance identifies deepfakes, AI application compromise, prompt injection, and software supply chains as critical threats. For exposure management, the immediate implication is to map AI systems and their connections, assess what data and actions they can reach, and test and monitor them through development and runtime. A model or agent should not be treated as an isolated asset when its integrations create access to other systems.

Tools and framework choices
CISA names Thingful, Censys, Shodan, and Shadowserver as examples of web-based platforms for identifying internet-exposed assets. CISA says the platforms have differing capabilities and that their inclusion does not imply government endorsement. Evaluate whether any discovery source fits your scope and processes rather than treating the list as a ranking or recommendation.
When evaluating exposure-management capabilities, compare them against the work your organization needs to perform:
- Coverage: Can the process account for cloud, internet-facing services, operational technology where applicable, AI applications, agents, and integrations?
- Context: Can it connect asset findings with useful identity, vulnerability, cloud, software, and threat information?
- Actionability: Does it support prioritization, validation, ownership, and remediation workflows?
- Lifecycle: Can it support recurring assessments as well as runtime monitoring?
- AI coverage: Can it help track models and components, support security testing, and monitor deployed AI systems?
- Operational fit: Does it work with existing identity, vulnerability-management, cloud-security, software-supply-chain, and incident-response processes?
These are selection criteria, not claims that a particular product provides every capability. Gartner’s public abstract on an AI-based threat exposure management framework says unchecked IT integration can raise CPS/OT risk and siloed telemetry can create blind spots; it describes using AI for unified, context-aware telemetry. The full framework is not publicly available on the Gartner abstract page, so the abstract should not be taken as a detailed implementation guide.
