How to Adjust Xbox Elite Controller Stick Sensitivity and Deadzones

Xbox Accessories lets you adjust Elite Series 2 stick response curves. Deadzones are separate game-level settings that ignore small inputs near stick center.

Use the Xbox Accessories app to change an Elite Series 2 stick’s sensitivity curve; adjust an actual deadzone in the game if it offers that setting. They are different controls: a curve changes how stick movement maps to output, while a deadzone ignores input near the stick’s center.

Adjust an Elite Series 2 stick in Xbox Accessories

Microsoft confirms that the Elite Wireless Controller Series 2 supports adjustable stick sensitivity curves through Xbox Accessories. The app’s controller configuration features are available on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Windows 10 or 11. Menu wording may vary by platform or app version.

  1. Open the Xbox Accessories app on your Xbox console or supported Windows PC.
  2. Select your Elite controller, then open its profile or configuration controls. Create or edit a profile if needed.
  3. Choose the left or right stick you want to change, then adjust its sensitivity curve.
  4. Apply the change, try it in the game you play, and make another small adjustment if necessary. If the game has its own deadzone setting, adjust that separately.

This is a practical navigation path for reaching the stick controls. Xbox’s support article, “Adjusting the Xbox stick settings in the Accessories app”, covers the feature, but its detailed page content was not available in the accessible view. The specific curve labels and options may therefore depend on what your app displays.

Deadzone and sensitivity curve are not the same setting

Deadzone

A deadzone is a range around the stick’s center that an application treats as no movement. Microsoft’s XInput documentation describes deadzones as a way for software to decide when an analog input is large enough to count as movement. Microsoft’s UWP gamepad documentation explains that near-center readings can vary and that ignoring small values can account for manufacturing differences, wear, or other mechanical factors.

If your game exposes a deadzone control, that is where to change the game’s threshold for registering small stick movements. The right setting depends on the game and controller; Microsoft’s developer documentation does not prescribe a value for a particular game.

Sensitivity or response curve

A response curve changes how stick movement translates into the input received by software. The Elite Series 2 lets you adjust this curve in Xbox Accessories, but that does not make the curve a deadzone control. Do not assume that choosing a particular curve will suppress every small input or eliminate stick drift.

What the Elite Series 2 tension tool changes

The Series 2 has three physical thumbstick-tension settings. Its adjustment tool changes how much mechanical resistance the stick has; it does not change an electronic deadzone or the sensitivity curve. Microsoft lists adjustable tension, interchangeable thumbstick tops, and app-based curves among the controller’s features. The full Series 2 package includes the adjustment tool and additional accessories, while the Core package includes fewer items, so check the exact package before buying replacement tops or accessories.

If the stick moves when untouched

A deadzone can filter small center readings in a game that provides the setting, but it does not repair the controller. Microsoft notes that analog readings may vary because of mechanical factors and wear. If movement persists when the stick is untouched, changing a curve may alter how the input feels, but it is not a guaranteed fix for worn or faulty hardware.

  • If it occurs in one game, review that game’s deadzone setting, if available.
  • If it continues across games, treat it as a possible controller hardware issue rather than assuming a sensitivity setting will resolve it.
