Instagram Teen Accounts limit who can start a conversation with a teen: by default, the teen can receive messages from people they follow or are already connected to. For Teen Account holders under 16, making built-in protections less strict requires a parent’s permission. Parents can participate in certain changes through supervision, but supervision does not let them read message contents.
What Instagram’s default messaging restriction does
Meta says Teen Accounts use the strictest messaging settings by default. A teen can be messaged by people they follow or are already connected to; people outside those connections cannot simply start an unrestricted direct-message conversation. Meta says Teen Accounts had rolled out to every country where Instagram is available by June 11, 2025. This is a restriction on messaging, not a guarantee that no unfamiliar person can make any contact. Someone the teen does not follow or is not connected to may be able to send a message request. Meta says such requests are text-only until the teen accepts the chat. Adults over 18 are restricted from starting private chats with teens they are not connected to. For a Teen Account holder under 16, Meta says parent permission is required to make built-in protections less strict. When supervision is active, a parent can approve or deny certain setting-change requests. Meta also says supervised parents can approve setting changes regardless of the teen’s age, so the under-16 permission rule and the broader role of supervision should not be treated as identical rules. How to manage the setting with supervision
Meta identifies Family Center as a central place for parents of supervised teens to manage safety settings. In May 2026, Meta said Family Center was rolling out globally. The current tap-by-tap path and exact menu labels for changing Instagram messaging permissions are not established by the available official sources, and may vary as the app changes. Start from Meta’s Family Center announcement and check the labels shown in your current Instagram app or Family Center rather than relying on an unverified walkthrough.
Supervision is not access to message contents. Meta says parents cannot read a teen’s messages, though a supervising parent can see whom the teen has messaged in the past seven days. Meta’s Teen Accounts announcement describes that distinction.

What to keep in mind
- Check whether the account is a Teen Account and whether supervision is active before assuming the same approval rules apply.
- Discuss which contacts the teen wants to hear from before loosening restrictions; the default is designed around existing connections.
- Explain that an unconnected person’s request may be text-only until accepted, rather than implying that requests are impossible.
- Meta reported that 97% of teens aged 13–15 kept their default Teen Account restrictions on in its April 2025 update. This is a figure reported by Meta, not an independent outcome measure. Meta’s update also reported that 94% of US parents said Teen Accounts would be helpful; that figure is likewise Meta-reported.
