How to Adjust Volume on iPhone, Windows, and Android

Device volume controls can affect media, alerts, individual apps, or accessibility speech. Here’s how to find the right one and troubleshoot quiet audio.

To change the sound you are hearing, start playback and adjust the active media control. If the result is still too quiet—or the wrong sound changes—check the app’s level, the device’s system or alert volume, the selected output, and any physical controls on the speaker or headphones. These controls are separate, so one slider may not affect every sound.

Which volume control should you change?

Phones and computers can have separate levels for media, calls, alerts, system sounds, and accessibility speech. Apps may also have their own controls, and a connected speaker or headset may have a physical level setting. The quickest way to identify the right control is to play the sound you want to adjust, then make a small change and listen again.

  • If music or video is playing, adjust media volume.
  • If a ringtone or notification is too loud, look for ringer or alert volume.
  • If only one app is quiet, check that app’s level as well as the system level.
  • If spoken navigation is hard to hear, check the accessibility speech controls.
  • If the device level looks correct, check the selected output and any controls on the connected speaker or headphones.

Adjust volume on an iPhone

While audio is playing, the iPhone side buttons adjust media volume. When no audio is playing, they adjust ringer and alert volume, unless that behavior is locked in Settings. You can also use the volume control in Control Center. Apple documents these options in its iPhone volume guide.

For ringer and alert levels, open Settings > Sounds & Haptics. The exact labels can vary with iOS version. Apple also documents maximum-level controls for the built-in speaker and headphones in Settings; use those if you want to limit how high playback can go.

Apple says measurements are most accurate with Apple or Beats headphones; levels for other headphones may be estimated. A slider position or percentage is not a universal decibel reading: perceived loudness also depends on the output hardware and headphones. The available guidance does not establish one volume setting or exposure duration that is safe for everyone.

When the controls do not solve it

If raising the expected slider has no effect, return to the playback and output path rather than continuing to increase levels indiscriminately. Check that the sound is playing in the intended app, that the app is not muted, that the correct output is selected, and that any speaker or headset is powered and connected. Change one control at a time so you can identify which setting fixes the problem.
