Group members have individual volume controls: voice commands and touch controls adjust only the device they address, while alarm and timer volume is set separately.
Adjust a speaker’s volume during group playback
- Make sure the phone or tablet running Google Home is signed in to the same Google account as the speaker or display.
- Open the Google Home app and tap Home > Favorites.
- Tap the current media session to open playback controls, volume controls, and playback-device selection. If the tab labels differ in your app, look for the active media session.
- Move the slider next to the speaker you want to make louder or quieter. Treat each slider as that device’s own volume control.
Google’s speaker-group controls do not provide a single group-wide volume slider. A voice command such as “Louder” or “Set volume to 40%” changes the device the command is directed to, not every speaker in the group. Touch controls on a speaker likewise change only that speaker. Phone or tablet hardware volume buttons do not adjust the speaker-group volume. Google Home and Nest Help and Google Cast Help describe these controls.

Which volume control should you use?
| What you want to adjust | Control to use | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| One speaker in a playing group | That speaker’s slider in the active media session | That device’s volume |
| One speaker by voice | Speak to the device whose volume should change | Only the addressed device |
| One speaker using its touch controls | Use the controls on that speaker | Only the touched device |
| Alarm or timer sound | That device’s alarm and timer setting | Alarm and timer volume, separate from media and Assistant volume |
Set alarm and timer volume separately
Alarm and timer levels are not controlled by the media slider. Adjust the setting for the specific device:
- In the Google Home app: open the device tile, then go to Settings > Audio > Alarms and timers and adjust the level.
- On a Nest display: swipe up to open Quick settings, tap Volume, and expand the timers-and-alarms control.
Google explains the separate controls in its volume guide for Nest speakers and displays.

Correct a speaker that plays late
If speakers in a group sound out of sync, use Google’s Group delay correction setting while music is casting. The setting compensates for a speaker that plays later than another; it is not a volume control.
- Start music on the group. Stand between the two affected speakers, or as close to their midpoint as practical.
- Compare how loud each speaker sounds and adjust their levels until they sound approximately equally loud. This helps make the timing comparison more useful.
- If the group has more than two speakers, choose two affected speakers and mute the others while diagnosing the delay.
- Open the settings for the speaker that plays last and go to Settings > Audio > Group delay correction. Increase its correction until playback sounds synchronized.
Google lists typical group-delay reference ranges of 0–40 ms for speakers, 0–80 ms for soundbars, and 0–70 ms for receivers. Google Home and Nest Help does not state a publication year for these figures, and cautions that specific models may fall outside the ranges. They are troubleshooting references, not guaranteed specifications for an individual device. See Google’s group playback delay guide.

Group setup details that affect playback
Google lists Nest Audio among the devices compatible with speaker groups. You create a group in the Google Home app on a phone or tablet; group creation is not available in the Chrome browser. Editing a group while it is casting stops the current playback, so start casting again after the change. See Google’s speaker-group compatibility and setup information.
