There is no single PS5 brightness setting that works for every horror game, TV, and room. Start with your display and PS5’s HDR output, calibrate the console, then make small, game-specific adjustments while checking both shadow detail and the atmosphere you want to preserve.
Check your display and PS5 HDR output first
PS5 can output HDR, but how it looks depends on the connected home entertainment setup. Confirm that your TV or monitor supports HDR if you want HDR output, and consult its manual for the correct HDR or game picture mode. Avoid copying picture settings intended for a different display model.

PlayStation describes HDR as delivering “a higher contrast—or larger color and brightness range—than Standard Dynamic Range (SDR).” That does not mean HDR will automatically make every dark game easier to see; the display and the game’s implementation matter too. Choose how the PS5 handles HDR
- On the PS5, open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > HDR.
- Select On When Supported to keep non-HDR games and apps in SDR. Choose Always On if you want the console to convert non-HDR content to HDR output.
PlayStation does not identify Always On as universally better. If you are unsure, On When Supported avoids converting non-HDR content; compare the options on your own display rather than assuming one will improve every game.

Calibrate the console’s HDR output
- Open Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output > Adjust HDR.
- Follow the PS5’s on-screen instructions for the connected display. Sony describes this adjustment as a way to fine-tune brightness and optimize HDR rendering, not as a universal brightness target.

Adjust the individual game, not every game at once
After setting the display and console, use the game’s own display options. Depending on the title, these may include brightness, gamma, HDR calibration, black level, or a visibility test. Follow the game’s instructions: labels that sound similar do not necessarily control the same thing.

Use a dark scene as a practical check
- Choose a scene where you need to distinguish important objects or paths from deep shadows.
- Increase visibility only enough to reveal details you need to play.
- Check whether black areas turn gray or the image loses depth. If they do, reduce the adjustment until the scene retains the contrast you prefer.
This is a practical way to balance legibility and mood, not a numeric calibration standard. A user discussion may ask, “What settings do you use for Horror movies and games?” but personal settings are not evidence of a reliable preset for other displays or games: Reddit discussion.

In its documentation for The Last of Us Part II Remastered, Naughty Dog says: “You can use Contrast to adjust the peak brightness in SDR and HDR modes, and Brightness to adjust the grayscale from black-to-white.” This describes that game’s controls; it should not be assumed to define the same sliders in other titles. Compare SDR and HDR in the same game
If a title lets you choose SDR or HDR, compare the modes on the same display and in the same scene. Look at shadow detail, bright highlights, black level, and whether the image still has the contrast you want. The available guidance does not establish one mode as the winner for horror games, so let the scene and your display decide.
Leave unrelated console settings alone
RGB Range is not a general brightness fix. Sony advises changing it only when the HDMI device does not report RGB range correctly. Use comfort options separately from image calibration
If dark scenes remain uncomfortable, subtitles or other game comfort options may help without changing the image. PS5 game presets can include performance or resolution mode, camera movement, and subtitle or audio options, but not every game supports every preset.
