Tell affected workers which approach applies, record the hours actually worked—including the repeated or skipped hour—and check weekly overtime and any applicable local law, contract, or workplace policy. U.S. federal guidance does not prescribe one universal schedule adjustment.
Confirm whether and when the workplace changes clocks
Daylight saving time rules depend on location. In the United States, NIST lists the 2026 transitions as March 8 at 2 a.m. local time, when clocks advance to 3 a.m., and November 1 at 2 a.m. local time, when clocks return to 1 a.m. The 1 a.m. hour therefore occurs twice in the fall. See NIST’s Daylight Saving Time Rules for the U.S. dates and rules.

Most U.S. areas observe daylight saving time, but Hawaii, American Samoa, Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and most of Arizona do not; the Navajo Nation does. Confirm the rule for the specific worksite and the applicable year before revising a roster. A non-U.S. workplace must follow its own jurisdiction’s dates and employment rules.
Choose how to handle the shift that crosses the change
There are two practical scheduling approaches. Federal guidance cited here does not mandate either one; flexible schedules and alternative arrangements are matters of agreement between the employer and employee or their representative. Apply the relevant law, agreement, and policy, and make the choice explicit in the roster and worker communications.

| Approach | What stays consistent | What changes | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keep local wall-clock start and end times fixed | The posted local start and finish times | Elapsed time worked can be shorter in spring or longer in fall | Actual hours recorded, pay treatment, and any overtime impact |
| Adjust the schedule to preserve planned elapsed duration | The intended elapsed shift length | At least one local start or finish time may differ from the usual roster | Worker agreement, applicable policy, accurate time records, and overtime totals |
Before the affected shift, tell workers which approach applies, what their expected start and finish times are, how the timekeeping system will handle the transition, and whom to contact if the recorded hours do not match the hours worked.
Understand the skipped and repeated hours
Spring: one local hour is skipped
At the spring transition, clocks jump from 2 a.m. to 3 a.m. A shift kept on the same local wall-clock times can therefore contain one fewer elapsed hour than usual if it spans the jump. A schedule adjusted to preserve elapsed duration may use a different finish time, subject to the applicable arrangement.

Fall: one local hour repeats
At the fall transition, clocks move from 2 a.m. back to 1 a.m. A shift spanning the change can include the 1 a.m. hour twice. The timekeeping procedure must distinguish the two occurrences so that the record reflects the hours actually worked.
Record actual work time and review pay
The U.S. Department of Labor’s Wage and Hour Division says in its FLSA Hours Worked Advisor that employees must be credited with all hours actually worked. Its example describes an 11 p.m.–7:30 a.m. shift with a 30-minute unpaid lunch: assuming the employee works that shift as described, the credited work time is seven hours on spring-forward night and nine hours on fall-back night. These are example-specific figures, not a general estimate for every overnight shift.

Keep the roster distinct from the time record. Record the actual work period, including the repeated hour where applicable, and note any difference between scheduled and actual time. The DOL also requires covered employers to maintain complete and accurate records; see its recordkeeping guidance.
Pay consequences depend on actual hours and the rules that apply to the worker. The federal guidance says covered, nonexempt employees must receive at least one and one-half times their regular rate for hours worked over 40 in a workweek. The DOL’s night-work guidance says extra pay for night shifts is a matter of agreement, rather than a universal federal night premium. Check applicable state or local requirements, collective agreements, and employer policy as well; these federal statements do not settle every worker’s entitlement. See DOL guidance on night work.

- 【Remote Control & DST】All the settings and operations of the big wall clock do not need to be removed, but can be easily done with the remote control(2*AAA batteries need to be installed). You can easily change DST time in March and November using the remote.
Do not assume that every worker automatically gains or loses an hour of pay when clocks change. The hours worked, schedule arrangement, and applicable pay rules determine the result.

Use a short checklist before the transition
- Confirm whether the worksite observes daylight saving time and verify the current transition date for that location.
- Identify each shift that crosses the clock change, including which hour will be skipped or repeated.
- Decide whether posted local times stay fixed or the shift will be adjusted to preserve elapsed duration, in line with applicable agreements and policy.
- Notify affected workers of the schedule and the method for recording the transition.
- Check that the timekeeping process captures actual hours, including the repeated fall hour, and correct discrepancies.
- Review each affected worker’s workweek total for overtime and confirm any additional jurisdictional or contractual rules.
Do not apply another country’s example as a U.S. rule
Daylight saving time and employment rules vary by country. For example, Australia’s Fair Work Ombudsman says an overnight worker paid by the clock may work one hour less but still receive payment for the full shift when daylight saving starts. That is guidance for the described Australian arrangement, not a rule to apply to U.S. employees. See the Fair Work Ombudsman’s daylight saving guidance.
