To change your MacBook’s screen brightness, open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays and move the Brightness slider. To turn True Tone on or off, use the same Displays panel; the control appears only when the selected display supports it.

Choose automatic or manual brightness
In System Settings > Displays, enable Automatically adjust brightness if the option is shown. A Mac needs an ambient light sensor for this control, so its absence may reflect hardware support rather than a settings problem. If the option is unavailable, adjust brightness manually with the slider or keyboard keys. Apple describes the setting and its availability in its brightness instructions.

If more than one display is connected, select the display you want to change at the top of the panel.

Earlier macOS versions
Open Apple menu > System Preferences > Displays, select the intended display if needed, and use the True Tone control if it is available.

True Tone uses sensors to adjust display color and intensity in response to ambient light. Apple says it can be used at the same time as Night Shift. See Use True Tone on Mac for supported displays and details.

Color-critical work: Turn True Tone off while evaluating color with your chosen workflow settings. Because it continuously shifts color temperature, it can make colors appear inaccurate; it is not a color-calibration tool. Apple explains this limitation in its True Tone guidance.

Confirm display support. True Tone appears only for a supported display. Apple’s support article describes eligible Mac and external displays.

Review accessibility display settings. Inverting colors, applying a grayscale filter, or increasing contrast may turn True Tone off. Apple lists these interactions in Use True Tone on Mac.

Check the selected reference mode. Some reference modes make True Tone, Night Shift, automatic brightness, the brightness slider, or keyboard brightness controls unavailable. Apple documents these limits in Use reference modes with your Apple display.
