How to Adjust Kindle Brightness and Warmth for Comfortable Reading

Adjust Kindle brightness from Quick Actions or the in-book toolbar, and use Screen and brightness > Brightness and warmth on compatible e-readers. The Kindle app has a separate Aa > Screen Brightness path.

On a Kindle e-reader, swipe down from the top of the Home screen to open Quick Actions, then move the brightness scale or tap the plus and minus buttons. While a book is open, tap the top of the page first so the reading toolbar appears. On models that support it, open Screen and brightness and choose Brightness and warmth to tune the warmer light.

The exact controls depend on whether you are using a dedicated Kindle e-reader or the Kindle app, and on the e-reader model. The app has its own brightness slider; it should not be assumed to provide the same warmth control as a compatible e-reader. Use the steps below to identify your device, change each setting, and diagnose a missing control.

First identify which Kindle you are adjusting

“Kindle” can mean either a dedicated e-ink Kindle e-reader or the Kindle reading app on a phone or tablet. They expose different menus, so choosing the wrong instructions is the most common reason a brightness or warmth option appears to be missing.

Device Where brightness is adjusted Where warmth is adjusted What is established by Amazon’s instructions
Dedicated Kindle e-reader Quick Actions from the Home screen, or the reading toolbar after tapping the top of a book Screen and brightness > Brightness and warmth on compatible models Controls vary by model; adjustable warm light is identified for specific newer models
Kindle reading app Open a book, tap the top center, open Aa, then use Screen Brightness Not stated in the cited app guidance as the same control available on e-readers The app has a separate reading-settings path

Amazon’s model-identification guide is the safest way to confirm which e-reader you own: Identify Your Kindle E-Reader. If you use a phone or tablet app, skip the e-reader troubleshooting sections and follow the app procedure below.

Adjust brightness on a Kindle e-reader

From the Home screen

  1. Wake the Kindle and go to the Home screen or Library.
  2. Swipe down from the top edge to open Quick Actions. If the swipe does not register, start on the display itself rather than the bezel and drag steadily downward.
  3. Locate the brightness scale. Tap along the scale for a larger change, or tap the + and − buttons for smaller, gradual changes.
  4. Stop when the page looks readable in the light where you are sitting. There is no universal “correct” number in Amazon’s instructions; the useful level changes with room lighting, time of day and your own preference.

Amazon describes this control as follows: “To adjust the brightness, use the scale or the + or – buttons for gradual change.” The wording appears in Adjust the Screen Light on Your Kindle E-Reader.

While a book is open

  1. Open any book and tap near the top edge of the page. This reveals the reading toolbar.
  2. Use the same brightness scale or plus/minus controls in the toolbar.
  3. Tap the page again, or wait for the toolbar to hide, when you want an unobstructed reading view.

If the toolbar does not appear, tap once at the very top center rather than repeatedly tapping in the middle of the page. A middle tap may select text or turn a page instead of opening reading controls.

Use a long press for an extreme change

On compatible Kindle e-readers, Amazon says that holding the plus or minus button can maximize the front light or turn it off. A long press is useful when moving quickly from a dark room to bright daylight, but it can make the screen change more abruptly than the scale. If the result is uncomfortable, tap the opposite button briefly to make a smaller correction.

Adjust warm light on a compatible e-reader

  1. Open Settings from Quick Actions, or open Settings from the Kindle menu.
  2. Choose Screen and brightness.
  3. Select Brightness and warmth.
  4. Move the warmth control toward the warmer end for a more amber appearance, or back toward the cooler end for a whiter appearance.
  5. Adjust brightness separately until text remains clear at the selected warmth.

Amazon’s support instructions give this route: “Alternatively, use the Brightness and warmth option in the Screen and brightness setting menu to configure brightness and warmth.” See Adjust the Screen Light on Your Kindle E-Reader.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite 16GB (2024 model) – 7" glare-free display and weeks of battery life – Raspberry
  • Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
  • Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
  • Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
  • Battery life for your longest novel – A single charge via USB-C lasts up to 12 weeks.
  • Read in any light – Adjust the display from white to amber to read in bright sunlight or in the dark.

Warmth and brightness do different jobs. Brightness changes how much front light the e-ink display provides; warmth changes the color character of that light. Raising warmth does not automatically make a dim display easier to read, and lowering brightness does not create a cooler color. Set one, look at a full page of text, then adjust the other.

Which Kindle models have warm-light controls?

Warm light is not a feature on every Kindle generation. Amazon’s identification page specifically lists adjustable warm light for the Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation, 2024 release), including its Kids and Signature variants. Confirm your model before treating a missing warmth slider as a fault. The relevant model features are listed in Identify Your Kindle E-Reader.

Model or device category Adjustable warm light Adjustable front-light brightness How to interpret the information
Kindle Paperwhite, 12th Generation (2024 release) Yes, identified by Amazon Yes, the screen-light instructions apply to compatible e-readers Use Screen and brightness > Brightness and warmth
Kindle Paperwhite Kids, 12th Generation (2024 release) Yes, identified as a variant on Amazon’s identification page Yes, the screen-light instructions apply to compatible e-readers Use the same menu path on the e-reader
Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition, 12th Generation (2024 release) Yes, identified as a variant on Amazon’s identification page Yes, the screen-light instructions apply to compatible e-readers Use the same menu path on the e-reader
Other Kindle generations Not established by the cited identification material Not stated for every generation Check the exact model in Amazon’s identification and guide pages rather than assuming compatibility

Amazon publishes user and quick-start documentation for many generations in its Kindle E-Reader User and Quick Start Guides directory. Because the available documentation does not provide an exhaustive warm-light matrix for every historical model, the absence of a menu on an older device may be a feature limitation rather than a software problem.

Adjust brightness in the Kindle reading app

  1. Open the Kindle app and open the book you want to read.
  2. Tap the top center of the page to reveal reading controls.
  3. Tap Aa to open reading settings.
  4. Find Screen Brightness and drag its slider to the desired level.
  5. Tap outside the panel to return to the book.

These are app controls, not the e-reader’s Quick Actions panel. Amazon documents the app route in Accessible Reading Options for Kindle Reading Apps. That guidance establishes a brightness slider, but it does not establish that the app offers the same Brightness and warmth menu as a dedicated Kindle e-reader. If you need a warmer appearance in the app, check the phone or tablet’s own display settings; the exact names and behavior depend on that operating system and are outside Amazon’s Kindle e-reader instructions.

  • Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.

How to choose a comfortable setting without a “best” number

Amazon explains how to move the controls but does not prescribe a brightness or warmth value for comfortable reading. Treat the following as practical adjustment guidance, not an Amazon setting or a medical standard.

Start with the room, not a memorized slider position

  • In bright daylight, increase brightness only enough to keep the text and background distinct. Excess front light can make the page look washed out.
  • In a dim room, begin lower and raise the light in small steps until the page is easy to follow without squinting.
  • At night, a warmer setting may look less stark against a dark room. Change warmth gradually, because a large color shift can make the page seem dimmer even when brightness has not changed.
  • If another lamp is switched on or off, reassess the Kindle instead of preserving the previous slider position.

Use a two-pass adjustment

  1. Set warmth near the appearance you prefer while leaving brightness at a middle level.
  2. Read several lines, then adjust brightness one or two steps at a time.
  3. Look at normal paragraphs rather than a title or image, since large text can appear readable at a lower light level.
  4. Repeat after your eyes have had a moment to adapt to the room.

Keep a repeatable routine

For readers who switch between locations, note a few personal starting points such as “daylight,” “bedside lamp” and “dark room.” These labels are reminders, not official presets, and the right adjustment can still vary with the room and your eyes. The e-reader’s controls are designed for incremental changes, so use the plus and minus buttons when you want to recreate a setting rather than dragging the scale a long distance.

What to do when the warmth control is missing

Confirm that you are on an e-reader, not the app

The e-reader’s Screen and brightness menu is not the same as the app’s Aa menu. On a phone or tablet, follow the app steps above; do not look for an e-reader-style warmth slider inside Quick Actions.

Check the exact generation and variant

Open Amazon’s Identify Your Kindle E-Reader page and match the physical device to its model description. “Paperwhite” alone is not a complete generation name, and Kids or Signature branding can identify a variant of a particular release. The cited material confirms warm light for the 12th-generation 2024 Paperwhite family but does not confirm it for every earlier Kindle.

Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition 32GB (2024 model) – Auto-adjusting front light, wireless charging, and weeks of battery life – Metallic Jade
  • Our fastest Kindle Paperwhite ever – The next-generation 7“ Paperwhite display has a higher contrast ratio and 25% faster page turns.
  • Upgrade your reading experience – The Signature Edition features an auto-adjusting front light, wireless charging, and 32 GB storage.
  • Ready for travel – The ultra-thin design has a larger glare-free screen so pages stay sharp no matter where you are.
  • Escape into your books – Your Kindle doesn’t have social media, notifications, or other distracting apps.
  • Adapts to your surroundings – The auto-adjusting front light lets you read in the brightest sunlight or late into the night.

Open the full settings path

Some readers look only at the quick brightness strip. Open Settings, then Screen and brightness, and look specifically for Brightness and warmth. If the menu is absent there as well, the model may not support adjustable warmth.

Do not confuse text appearance with front-light controls

Amazon’s text-display article places font, layout and page-appearance options in the Aa menu. Those settings can change how text is presented, but they are not a substitute for the e-reader’s light controls. See Customize Your Kindle E-Reader Text Display for the text-display menu, and use the screen-light article for brightness and warmth.

Use the model guide before assuming a fault

If brightness itself cannot be changed on a device that should have a front light, open the relevant manual from Amazon’s Kindle E-Reader User and Quick Start Guides directory. The guide can confirm the model-specific control layout. A warmth option that is never listed for that model is a compatibility difference, not something a restart can add.

Common mistakes and quick fixes

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Nothing happens when you swipe down The gesture started outside the active display area or was too short Place a finger on the screen near the top edge and drag down in one steady motion; use Settings from the menu if Quick Actions still will not open
The brightness controls are not visible in a book The reading toolbar is hidden Tap the top of the page once to reveal it
You see Aa options but no warmth control You are in text settings, or you are using the app On an e-reader, open Settings > Screen and brightness; in the app, use Screen Brightness and the device’s display settings for other color adjustments
The page looks too yellow after changing warmth Warmth was increased more than intended Move the warmth control back toward the cooler end, then make a smaller brightness adjustment if needed
The screen is still hard to read after increasing brightness Room reflections, a dirty surface or a mismatch between text size and viewing distance Change your position relative to the light source, clean the display with a suitable soft cloth, or use the text-display controls for a larger font rather than continually raising the front light

When to use the e-reader’s text settings instead

Brightness and warmth affect the light around the text; they do not change the font, size, boldness or margins. If letters are the problem rather than illumination, open the book’s reading toolbar and choose Aa for text-display options. Amazon documents those options separately in Customize Your Kindle E-Reader Text Display.

Best Value
Amazon Kindle Paperwhite Signature Edition 32GB (2024 model) – Auto-adjusting front light, wireless charging, and weeks of battery life – Metallic Black
  • Increase text size when you are holding the Kindle farther away than usual.
  • Try a different font or heavier weight if letter shapes blend into the background.
  • Adjust margins or line spacing if crowded lines make reading tiring.

Make the smallest change that solves the problem: a font adjustment can improve legibility without adding more front light, while warmth cannot substitute for text that is too small.

If your current Kindle has no warm light

Continue using its brightness control; the warmth feature is optional, not required for changing the front-light intensity. If adjustable warmth is a deciding feature for a future e-reader, Amazon identifies the Kindle Paperwhite (12th Generation, 2024 release) and its Kids and Signature variants as models with adjustable warm light: model identification details. That feature note does not change the brightness steps for the Kindle you already own.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I set Kindle brightness to an exact recommended number?

No. Amazon’s instructions explain the controls but do not specify a universal brightness or warmth value. Adjust gradually for the room and your own comfort.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does my Kindle have brightness but no warmth slider?

Warm light is model-dependent. Check the exact generation and variant in Amazon’s Kindle identification guide; the cited support specifically lists adjustable warm light for the 12th-generation 2024 Kindle Paperwhite family.

Does the Kindle app use the same warmth control as a Kindle e-reader?

Amazon’s app guidance documents a Screen Brightness slider under Aa settings but does not establish the same Brightness and warmth menu used by compatible e-readers.
