“Keyboard sensitivity” can mean three different things: how long a key must be held before it repeats, how quickly it repeats, or how long the computer waits before accepting a press. On a Mac, these behaviors have separate controls. The available sources establish the Mac settings but do not verify current Windows steps, so this guide does not guess at Windows menus or labels.
Find the setting that matches the problem
Start with what the keyboard is doing. Multiple characters appearing while you hold a key point to repeat timing. A key activating after an accidental brush points to initial-press acceptance. A press that seems to go missing may involve an accessibility delay.

| What you notice | Mac control to check | What it changes |
|---|---|---|
| A held key repeats too soon or too slowly | System Settings > Keyboard | Time before repetition begins and the repetition rate |
| A light or accidental press is accepted | System Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard > Slow Keys | How long the Mac waits before accepting a press |
| A press seems not to register | Check whether Slow Keys is enabled | With Slow Keys on, the key must be held longer than usual to be recognized |
Adjust how held keys repeat on Mac
Apple Support describes the two repeat controls this way: “You can set how long you must hold down the key before it starts repeating and how fast it repeats once it starts.”
- Choose Apple menu > System Settings.
- Select Keyboard.
- Adjust Delay until repeat to change how long a key must be held before it begins repeating.
- Adjust Key repeat rate to change how quickly characters repeat once repetition has started.
For example, holding Delete can continue deleting while the key is down. If a held key produces too many repeated characters, try a longer delay before repeat, a slower repeat rate, or both. If repetition feels sluggish, try a shorter delay or a faster rate. Apple does not prescribe a universally best slider position, so adjust in small increments and test in a text field.

- ENHANCED TYPING EXPERIENCE — Magic Keyboard delivers a remarkably comfortable and precise typing experience. Its extended layout features document navigation controls for quick scrolling and full-size arrow keys. The numeric keypad is ideal for spreadsheets and finance applications.
- GO WEEKS WITHOUT CHARGING — The incredibly long-lasting internal battery will power your keyboard for about a month or more between charges. (Battery life varies by use.) Comes with a Lightning to USB Cable that lets you pair and charge by connecting to a USB port on your Mac.
- SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS — Requires a Bluetooth-enabled Mac with macOS 10.12.4 or later, an iPad with iPadOS 13.4 or later, or an iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 10.3 or later.
Be cautious about setting Key repeat rate to Off: Apple says special characters will not appear when you hold down letters. Choose that setting only if you want to disable that held-key behavior.
Change how long Mac waits before accepting a press
Slow Keys is an accessibility feature, not another repeat-rate slider. It adds a delay before the Mac accepts an initial keystroke. This can help when light or accidental touches trigger unwanted characters, but a longer acceptance delay also means you must wait longer or hold the key longer.

- Adjust Acceptance delay to change how long the Mac waits after a key is pressed before accepting it.
Apple also offers click-key sounds as feedback when the Mac responds. If presses seem to be missed rather than triggered too easily, check whether Slow Keys is on; Apple notes that with this feature enabled, a key must be held longer than usual before it is recognized. Test the keyboard after changing the setting.
Why Windows instructions are not included here
The available official documentation for this guide establishes Mac controls only. It does not verify Windows menu paths, labels, defaults, or version-specific behavior. Because “sensitivity” can describe different stages of keyboard input, applying a Mac setting name or path to Windows would risk sending readers to the wrong control. Windows users should consult current Microsoft support guidance for their version of Windows rather than rely on an unverified path.

What to know about external keyboards
Available accessory settings can depend on the keyboard’s capabilities. Apple documents its procedures as Mac operating-system controls; they do not establish that replacing a keyboard is necessary to change software timing. If you use an external keyboard, first check the available controls in the Mac settings and test the result with that accessory connected.
