How to Adjust Horror Game Difficulty and Accessibility Settings on PS5

A practical PS5 guide to console accessibility, Game Presets and game-specific horror settings, with detailed examples from The Last of Us Part II and Until Dawn.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reliable way to change a horror game on PS5 is to use two layers of settings: console controls in Settings > Accessibility, and the individual game’s own options. Use the PS5 menus for system-wide features such as screen-reader behavior, zoom, captions and controller preferences; use the game menu for the actual difficulty, combat assists, input shortcuts, subtitles and audio cues.

PS5 Game Presets can provide a starting preference for difficulty, camera behavior, subtitles and audio, or performance and resolution mode. They are not universal overrides: Sony says presets apply to PS5 games only, only where a title exposes the relevant option, and some settings may not apply to every game.

First, separate PS5 settings from game settings

Horror games often put essential information in sound, darkness, visual effects, timed inputs or sudden camera movement. A console-level setting can make the system easier to operate, but it cannot create a missing game feature. Conversely, a game can offer a detailed accessibility menu that has no equivalent in the PS5 dashboard.

  • PS5 settings: system features under Settings > Accessibility, including controller, display and text options, screen reader, closed captions, chat transcription, mono audio and zoom.
  • Game Presets: common preferences under Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets. They are starting preferences, not guaranteed commands to every game.
  • Game settings: the title’s own Settings, Accessibility, Gameplay, Controls, Audio, Display or Difficulty screens. These determine the options actually implemented in that game.

For a new horror game, check all three layers once, then test the result in a low-risk area before beginning a long session.

Set console accessibility features on PS5

Open the main accessibility menu

  1. From the PS5 home screen, select Settings in the upper-right corner.
  2. Choose Accessibility.
  3. Select the category that matches the barrier you are addressing, such as controller, display and text, screen reader, closed captions, chat transcription, mono audio or zoom.
  4. Change one or two settings, return to the game and verify the effect. Keeping changes isolated makes it clear whether a game or the console supplied the behavior.

You can add Accessibility to the PS5 control centre for faster access. Press the PS button, open the control centre, choose the customization option, and add Accessibility to the visible controls. The exact arrangement can vary with system software, so look for the control-centre edit command rather than assuming a fixed icon position.

Controller and haptic choices

Controller options can help with button reach, feedback and operation of the console. Do not assume that a dashboard haptic setting changes every game’s haptics. Sony’s documented haptic-feedback control is described for navigating the console; a game may expose its own vibration or adaptive-trigger switch, or may not offer one.

Display, text and reading support

Display and text settings can improve legibility when menus, tutorials or inventory screens are difficult to read. The PS5 also provides screen-reader and closed-caption functions where supported by the relevant system content. These functions do not automatically supply captions for a game that does not implement its own subtitle track.

Use zoom with realistic expectations

The documented path is Settings > Accessibility > Display and Sound > Zoom. Console zoom enlarges portions of the PS5 interface, but it is not a complete in-game magnifier. PlayStation notes limitations in some contexts, and the display area may not follow movement during gameplay. If a horror title has its own text-size, HUD-scale or high-contrast controls, those are normally more useful during play.

Choose a PS5 Game Preset

Game Presets are useful when you tend to begin games with the same preference. They can include difficulty, performance or resolution mode, first-person and third-person view movement, and subtitles and audio.

  1. Open Settings from the PS5 home screen.
  2. Select Saved Data and Game/App Settings.
  3. Open Game Presets.
  4. Choose the preference categories shown on your console, then select the option you want as a default.
  5. Launch the horror game and inspect its own menus before relying on the preset.
Preset area What it can provide Important limit
Difficulty A preferred difficulty where the PS5 game exposes a compatible choice It cannot manufacture custom sliders or assists that the title does not provide.
Performance or resolution A preferred graphics mode when the game supports the setting Some games ignore the preset or use their own mode names.
First-person and third-person movement A preferred camera-movement behavior Only games implementing the relevant option can use it.
Subtitles and audio A preferred subtitle or audio behavior where offered It does not guarantee a particular subtitle size, speaker label or cue system in every title.

Sony states that Game Presets apply only to PS5 games. A PS4 game running through backward compatibility, or a PS5 game without the corresponding option, may not follow the preference. Treat the preset as a time-saving default and confirm the result inside the title.

Check a game’s listed accessibility features before launching

PlayStation can show developer-provided accessibility information from a game’s Store hub.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. From the Games home screen, select PlayStation Store.
  2. Open the game’s hub or product page.
  3. Open the side panel, or press Triangle when that shortcut is shown.
  4. Review the listed accessibility features and tags.

Accessibility Tags may describe visual and audio settings, DualSense options, difficulty settings and communication features. They are a preview of what the developer has declared. A game may have no tags, and a tag does not promise that every related control exists in every mode, language or version.

After checking the listing, open the game itself. Common headings are Settings, Accessibility, Gameplay, Controls, Audio, Display and Difficulty. There is no single menu layout shared by all horror games, so use the labels visible in your copy and check for a patch or edition difference if an expected option is missing.

Match the setting to the barrier

Start with the problem you want to remove, not with a preset label such as Easy. A targeted change usually preserves more of the intended tension while making the game playable.

If important information is delivered through sound

  • Turn on subtitles if the game provides them, then look for speaker identification, subtitle backgrounds, size, color or contrast controls.
  • Look for visual indicators for nearby threats, off-screen attacks, stealth awareness or traversal sounds.
  • Use mono audio when separating left and right channels is difficult; this is a PS5 system option, while a game may also have its own audio mix.
  • Raise dialogue or reduce music and effects only if the title offers separate sliders. A global volume change can make every sound louder without making speech clearer.

Subtitles are not always a substitute for sound design. A game may communicate direction, distance or timing through effects that never receive captions, so inspect the game’s accessibility description for audio-cue support.

If visual information is difficult to see

  • Look for high-contrast interfaces, larger text, reticle or HUD adjustments, and brightness or gamma controls in the game.
  • Use the game’s own awareness, outline or navigation indicators when available.
  • Try text-to-speech or screen-reader support for menus and on-screen text if the title implements it.
  • Use PS5 zoom for dashboard content, but do not treat it as a dependable moving magnifier during gameplay.

If controls, motion or timing are the barrier

  • Check for complete button remapping rather than assuming every command can be moved.
  • Look for simplified or skippable Quick Time Events, reduced rapid presses, one-button alternatives, or options that remove simultaneous-button requirements.
  • Disable motion aiming, touch controls, vibration or adaptive triggers when those inputs cause discomfort or accidental activation.
  • Consider a slower camera turn, reduced camera shake or a different stick behavior if the game provides it.

These are game-level possibilities, not universal PS5 controls. Confirm each one in the title’s menu and test it with a non-critical action.

If the challenge itself is the problem

  • Choose a lower difficulty before starting if you want fewer lethal mistakes and less resource pressure.
  • Look for independent assists such as reduced enemy perception, reduced accuracy, stronger dodge timing, stealth support, aim help or slow motion.
  • Use custom sliders when you want to keep exploration tense but reduce combat demands, or vice versa.
  • Check whether the game allows changes mid-session. Some titles permit them at any time; others lock a choice until a new game or checkpoint.

Example: The Last of Us Part II

Naughty Dog’s official accessibility documentation describes more than 60 accessibility settings and three presets focused on vision, hearing and motor accessibility. The figure is stated on the current official page without a publication year, so it should not be treated as a year-specific count or as a promise about every edition.

Difficulty structure

The game lists standard challenge levels of Very Light, Light, Moderate, Hard and Survivor, with Custom also available. Custom difficulty separates dimensions such as overall challenge, player strength, enemy strength, ally behavior, stealth and resource availability. That lets you reduce one source of pressure without necessarily removing all danger.

The official page says trophies are not limited by difficulty. You can therefore select a setting that suits your access needs without losing trophy eligibility solely because the difficulty is lower.

Useful accessibility examples

  • Text-to-speech: reads supported on-screen text.
  • Traversal and combat audio cues: provide non-visual information for supported actions and events.
  • Subtitle controls: include size and background adjustments.
  • Awareness indicators: make some threat or detection information visible.
  • Combat assists: examples include reduced enemy perception, reduced enemy accuracy, enhanced dodge and slow motion.

Some assists substantially alter play and may be unavailable during particular encounters. They are adjustable aids, not a guarantee that every sequence changes identically. The official page also discusses features added in Grounded Update Version 1.05. Some features require an internet connection and a PlayStation Network account, and the exact set can depend on the edition and installed software.

Naughty Dog states: “Naughty Dog encourages everyone to take advantage of these features to create a gameplay experience that’s right for them.”

Example: Until Dawn on PS5

PlayStation describes Until Dawn as an interactive, narrative-driven slasher-horror experience. Its PS5 feature information shows why a difficulty selector alone is not a useful accessibility checklist.

Options that change interaction demands

  • Adjustable difficulty.
  • Simplified Quick Time Events.
  • Customizable controls.
  • Control and tutorial reminders.
  • Choices that can avoid rapid button presses.
  • Choices that can avoid simultaneous button presses.
  • Options to avoid motion controls and touch controls.
  • Options to disable controller vibration and adaptive-trigger effects.

For someone who can aim and explore comfortably but cannot perform rapid or simultaneous presses, these controls may matter more than selecting an easier global difficulty. Check the game’s own accessibility or control screens because the exact wording and availability can change with the PS5 version.

Comparison axis Questions to ask Examples from the documented games
Challenge control Are there fixed levels, custom sliders, or assists for specific encounter demands? The Last of Us Part II offers five named levels plus Custom and separate challenge dimensions; Until Dawn lists adjustable difficulty.
Input demands Can you remap buttons or simplify rapid, simultaneous, motion or touch inputs? Until Dawn lists simplified QTEs, customizable controls and ways to avoid several input types.
Information channels Are subtitles, speaker cues, visual awareness indicators, audio cues or text-to-speech available? The Last of Us Part II documents text-to-speech, audio cues, subtitle adjustments and awareness indicators.
Feedback controls Can vibration, adaptive triggers or other physical feedback be adjusted? Until Dawn lists options to avoid vibration and adaptive-trigger effects; other titles may differ.
Scope and limits Is the feature from the console, the PS5 version, a specific patch or only certain encounters? PS5 presets have documented limits; game assists can be encounter-dependent and version-dependent.

A deliberate setup procedure for a new horror game

  1. Identify the barrier. Write down whether the problem is reading text, hearing cues, visual overload, camera movement, physical input, timed presses, or combat pressure.
  2. Set the console layer. Open Settings > Accessibility and change only the relevant system options, such as mono audio or controller behavior.
  3. Review Game Presets. Go to Settings > Saved Data and Game/App Settings > Game Presets and choose a useful default, knowing it may not apply.
  4. Inspect the Store hub. Use the side panel or Triangle shortcut to see the game’s declared Accessibility Tags.
  5. Open the game menu. Check Accessibility, Controls, Gameplay, Audio, Display and Difficulty rather than stopping at the first Easy/Normal/Hard selector.
  6. Change one category at a time. For example, enable subtitles first, then test audio cues; or simplify QTEs before lowering combat difficulty.
  7. Test safely. Use an early room, tutorial or repeatable checkpoint. Confirm that text is readable, cues are noticeable and controls work without strain.
  8. Record your choices. A short note of your settings helps restore them after a patch, profile change or new playthrough.

When a setting does not work

The preset was ignored

Confirm that you are playing the PS5 version and that the game exposes the relevant option. Reopen the game’s own menu and set the preference there. Sony explicitly allows that some Game Presets may not apply to every PS5 game.

You cannot find an accessibility menu

Search the headings Settings, Gameplay, Controls, Audio, Display and Difficulty. Then check the Store hub’s listed features. A missing tag or menu means you should not assume the feature exists under another hidden name.

Zoom is not useful during play

That is an expected limitation of the console zoom design. Use the title’s own text-size, HUD, contrast or magnification controls when available; otherwise adjust display distance and physical setup rather than promising that dashboard zoom will track gameplay.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A sound or visual cue is still missing

Subtitles and screen-reader functions cannot create information that the developer never exposed. Look for game-specific visual indicators, audio-cue modes or text-to-speech. If none is listed, choose a different difficulty or play mode only if it reduces dependence on that cue; do not assume a general PS5 toggle will supply it.

An assist is unavailable in one scene

Some game assists are disabled during particular encounters. Check whether the option returns after the sequence, and use a checkpoint or lower a different difficulty dimension if the title permits it.

Optional hardware for alternate input

Software settings are not the only route to comfortable play. Sony describes the Access controller for PS5 as a highly customizable controller kit designed to help players with disabilities. It can be operated in different orientations, used on a flat surface, or attached to an AMPS-pattern mount.

The controller is optional for this guide: you do not need it to adjust software difficulty or accessibility settings. Whether it is suitable depends on your required layout, other equipment, game controls and budget. Treat it as an alternate-input option, not as a universal solution or a requirement for any particular horror title.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep settings usable over time

  • After a system or game update, revisit the game menu and verify critical controls, subtitles and assists.
  • Save a profile or written note for different players; a setting that helps one person can make another person’s play less comfortable.
  • Review camera, vibration and trigger effects separately from difficulty. They affect comfort even when challenge is acceptable.
  • For a new title, read the Store accessibility listing before purchase, then confirm the implementation in the installed game.
  • Use the least disruptive change that removes the barrier, but do not hesitate to combine several options when the barrier is cumulative.

The practical rule is simple: use PS5 Accessibility for the console, Game Presets for defaults, and the horror game’s own menus for the controls that shape play. The closer the setting is to the problem—subtitle contrast for reading, visual cues for missed sounds, simplified QTEs for timing, or custom combat sliders for difficulty—the more predictable the result will be.
