There is no universal grinder direction or numbered scale, and the cited manufacturer guidance does not establish a standard temperature range across brands. Do not assume that a low number or a clockwise turn means “finer.”

How to adjust grind size safely
- Find your exact model’s instructions. Check the manual for the adjustment control, which direction means finer or coarser, and any warnings. The hopper dial and scale are model-specific.
- Start a coffee and adjust while the grinder runs. Move the control only one small step, in the direction stated in your manual. Philips says its grinder setting can only be adjusted while beans are being ground; De’Longhi likewise advises adjusting one notch at a time while the grinder is operating. Philips Support De’Longhi
- Brew several drinks before judging the change. Philips advises that it can take two to three cups to experience the difference. De’Longhi also says the adjustment may take a few coffees to take effect. Avoid making several dial changes in quick succession.
- Repeat only if needed. If the result is still not right after the machine has worked through the adjustment, make one more small change while grinding and assess again.
Moving the grinder more than one notch at once can risk damage on the Philips guidance cited above. Follow your own manual if its procedure differs.
How to change coffee strength
Use the drink’s strength, aroma or taste control when you want to change how much coffee is used without changing the bean particle size. De’Longhi explicitly distinguishes its taste selection, which changes coffee quantity, from the grinder setting, which changes grounds size. How to make coffee hotter
If your machine offers a temperature setting, raise it using the control or menu described in its manual. De’Longhi’s general guidance also recommends a rinse before brewing, pre-warming the cup on the machine shelf or with hot water, and disabling energy-saving mode if the machine has that feature. A model-specific example: De’Longhi ECAM29X.5Y
The ECAM29X.5Y manual describes its grinder as factory-set initially and instructs users to turn the dial only while the grinder operates at the start of preparation. It says a change may take at least two cups to take effect. For this model, the manual gives one-click directions toward dial position “7” for slow or no delivery and toward “1” for fuller-bodied, creamier coffee. Those numbers and directions apply to the documented model only; do not transfer them to another machine. If the result is not what you expected
- The grinder dial will not move: On the cited Philips and De’Longhi guidance, adjust only while grinding. Check the exact manual before trying again.
- The taste has not changed yet: Brew the number of drinks recommended for your model before making another adjustment; some changes are not apparent immediately.
