macOS Sequoia 15 and Sonoma 14 do not include the old Font Smoothing checkbox or slider in System Settings. You can still test the hidden AppleFontSmoothing preference in Terminal, but its effect varies by app, display and macOS version. For many blurry external monitors, choosing a suitable resolution, scaling mode or text size is more reliable.
Start with Displays settings and the display’s signal path, then use the Terminal experiment if the problem specifically looks like overly heavy or haloed text.
What font smoothing changes
Font smoothing is anti-aliasing applied to glyph edges as text is rendered. It does not change the font file, enlarge text or sharpen the monitor. Resolution and scaling change how the entire interface is rendered; Accessibility text size changes the size of supported text; monitor sharpness and signal processing happen in the display itself.
Older LCD subpixel rendering depended on a panel’s physical RGB layout. Do not assume the current preference can restore that pre-Retina behavior. Apple documents smoothing as a graphics-context option for developers, not as a current user-facing switch: Core Graphics font-smoothing documentation.

Before changing anything
- Check the version at Apple menu > About This Mac.
- Note whether the issue affects the built-in display, an external display or both.
- Write down the current resolution and scaling mode.
- Quit the apps you will compare, and use the same text, zoom and display mode for every test.
Inspect and change the hidden preference
Open Terminal from Applications or Spotlight. The following commands address the current host’s global preferences. Apple does not present this as a supported System Settings control; the value descriptions come from third-party macOS references such as SS64 and Sequoia-oriented coverage from Macwelt.
See the recorded value
defaults -currentHost read -g AppleFontSmoothing
You may see 0, 1, 2 or 3, or a message that the preference does not exist. A missing value means no custom value has been recorded; it does not prove that all smoothing is absent, and a returned value is not a guaranteed description of what every app currently displays.
Try each value
| Command | Common description | Possible trade-off |
|---|---|---|
defaults -currentHost write -g AppleFontSmoothing -int 0 |
Off | Can look sharper on some low-density panels, but may reveal jagged or thin edges. |
defaults -currentHost write -g AppleFontSmoothing -int 1 |
Light | Often a less-blurred compromise. |
defaults -currentHost write -g AppleFontSmoothing -int 2 |
Medium or default-like | Do not assume this is universally identical to the system default. |
defaults -currentHost write -g AppleFontSmoothing -int 3 |
Strong | Can make text appear heavier or softer. |
After each command, quit and reopen the affected app. If there is still no difference, log out and back in before judging the result. Some applications and rendering paths do not honor the preference.

Use Display settings first
Select the affected display
Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Displays, then select the external display in the sidebar or display arrangement.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Compare Default and scaled modes
Try Default first. Apple says macOS normally selects what it considers the best resolution for a display. Then compare a larger-text scaled option and, on a 4K display, a HiDPI-style effective resolution when available. Use Show all resolutions to expose additional modes. Scaling can improve legibility but may affect sharpness or performance; the best choice depends on panel size, pixel density, viewing distance and connection. See Apple’s guidance on changing display resolution.
If an unsupported mode leaves the screen black, wait about 15 seconds for macOS to revert, then press Esc. If necessary, start in Safe Mode and select Default resolution, following Apple’s recovery instructions.

Increase text size without changing smoothing
For system-wide compatible controls, open Apple menu > System Settings > Accessibility > Display > Text size. Apple also provides menu-bar size, display contrast and transparency controls in Accessibility > Display. Finder has view-specific text controls, and Safari offers page text zoom; Apple documents these options in Increase font size and icons.
Check the video path and monitor
- Confirm the monitor is using its native resolution where practical.
- Check whether a dock, KVM, adapter or HDMI converter is changing the signal.
- Look for RGB output rather than a television-oriented format or chroma subsampling.
- Disable monitor modes named Sharpness, Super Resolution or similar processing while testing.
- Compare the same monitor connected directly to the Mac if possible.
If the built-in Retina display looks normal while only the external screen is fuzzy, density, scaling, signal format or monitor processing is more likely than a universal macOS font setting.
Why the Terminal change may do nothing
Current Sonoma and Sequoia reports disagree about how consistently this preference remains effective. Lack of a visible change can mean the app ignores it, the app was not restarted, the display is high-density, or the real problem is scaling or the video signal. The preference is an experiment, not a guaranteed fix; discussions illustrating the differing results include Apple Community, MacRumors and a Sonoma user discussion.

Undo the preference and other changes
Return font smoothing control to macOS
defaults -currentHost delete -g AppleFontSmoothing
Deleting the custom value lets macOS choose its own behavior. If that command does not remove it in your setup, try:
defaults delete NSGlobalDomain AppleFontSmoothing
Quit and reopen applications, or log out and back in. To undo a display experiment, return to System Settings > Displays and choose Default; restore any monitor-side sharpness, color or input settings you changed.
Is there still a graphical Font Smoothing checkbox?
No. The frequently quoted checkbox belongs to an older OS X-era interface described in legacy Apple Pages help. Current Apple documentation covers resolution, scaling, text size, contrast and transparency instead; it does not provide a Sequoia or Sonoma path named Font smoothing.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does AppleFontSmoothing work on every Mac app?
No. Application rendering paths differ, and some apps or current macOS configurations show little or no visible response.
Should I use 0 or 1 on a 1440p monitor?
Test both at the same sensible resolution. Use 0 only if its sharper but potentially jagged edges suit you; use 1 if you want a gentler compromise.
Can font smoothing fix blurry HDMI text?
Not if the blur comes from scaling, chroma subsampling, an adapter or monitor processing. Check the signal path and display mode first.
How can I reduce eye strain?
Adjust text size, brightness, viewing distance, contrast, ambient lighting and refresh rate as appropriate; no smoothing value is an established eye-strain treatment.
