Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsWindows 11 does not include one universal graphic equalizer that every PC gets. Whether you can adjust EQ depends on the playback device you use, its driver, and any audio software installed by the PC or sound-device maker. Start with the built-in controls for that device, check the manufacturer’s audio app if none appear, and treat third-party equalizers as an optional last step.
Start with the output device in Settings
Windows 11 keeps per-device audio options in the Sound page. Because the options belong to each device, always begin with the device you actually listen through.

- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Select the output device you use, such as speakers, headphones, or an external DAC or sound card.
- Inspect the options shown on that device’s page and look for Audio enhancements. Microsoft’s Windows 11 audio troubleshooting guidance documents this setting for the selected output device. The exact controls can differ from one device to another, and some devices show no equalizer at all.
If you see a graphic equalizer with adjustable frequency bands here, use it. If you see only an enhancement toggle or a named effect, continue to the legacy page below.

- Note: - 3.5mm phone audio cable is not included in the package. - A power bank or a quality charger can be used to supply power to the device, because an impure power supply may cause AC noise.
- Open Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Sound.
- On the Playback tab, select the device that is currently active.
- Select Properties, then open the Enhancements tab.
Microsoft Learn describes this tab as the place to configure system effects. The default Windows effects it lists include Bass Boost, Bass Management, Loudness Equalization DSP, Low Frequency Protection, Room Correction, Speaker Fill, and surround effects. A device may expose only some of these. A named loudness or bass effect is not the same as a multi-band graphic equalizer, and “Loudness Equalization” in particular adjusts perceived loudness rather than giving you band-by-band control. Microsoft states the purpose of the tab in one sentence: “Windows provides an Enhancements tab with the Sound applet on the Control Panel for configuring these system effects.” (Microsoft Learn, Windows Default APOs)
When no equalizer option appears
A missing equalizer usually means the device’s effects come from its manufacturer rather than from Windows alone. Microsoft’s audio architecture documentation explains that OEMs and third-party audio hardware manufacturers can package custom digital processing effects as audio processing objects (APOs). Those vendors may also supply their own configuration app, which Microsoft’s documentation refers to as a Hardware Support App for configuring a custom APO (Microsoft Learn, audio processing object architecture).

Some users report seeing only Bass Boost, Headphone virtualization, and Loudness Equalization in the Enhancements list without an item named “Equalizer.” A Microsoft Q&A thread shows this kind of variation (Microsoft Q&A, how to enable sound equalization in Windows 11). That thread illustrates how results differ between machines; it does not guarantee what your device will show.

Third-party option: Equalizer APO with Peace
Equalizer APO is an open-source, third-party system equalizer. Peace is a graphical front end for it. Neither is part of Windows, and Microsoft does not support them. A community-authored setup guide describes the workflow, which you should treat as a starting point rather than a guarantee of compatibility (community setup guide on GitHub).
- Install Equalizer APO following the project’s current installation documentation.
- Use its Device Selector to choose the target playback device or devices.
- Open the graphical interface, Peace, to adjust the equalizer bands.
- In the Windows audio settings for the selected device, set the Audio enhancements property to Device Default Effects, as the guide advises.
Because this route installs system-level audio processing, results can depend on your driver, your device, and how Windows enhancements are configured. Read the project’s documentation for your Windows version before installing, and be ready to uninstall it if a device behaves unexpectedly.

Compare the routes
| Route | What it provides | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Settings > System > Sound, device page | A convenient place to select the output device and inspect its enhancement settings. | May not expose a graphic equalizer; controls are device-dependent (Microsoft Support). |
| Control Panel > Sound > Properties > Enhancements | Legacy access to Windows or driver-provided effects such as Bass Boost and Loudness Equalization DSP. | The list varies by driver, and individual effects are not necessarily a multi-band equalizer (Microsoft Learn). |
| Manufacturer or sound-device app | Configuration for vendor-specific audio effects, where the vendor supplies one. | The correct app and features depend on the exact hardware and installed driver (Microsoft Learn). |
| Equalizer APO with Peace | Optional system-wide equalization with a graphical interface, as described in a community guide. | Not a built-in Windows feature; setup can depend on device, driver, and enhancement settings (community guide). |
Choose a route by checking four things in order: whether you need a built-in effect or adjustable frequency bands, whether your playback device exposes the control at all, whether a manufacturer app supports your exact model, and how comfortable you are installing and troubleshooting third-party audio software.
If audio becomes distorted or misbehaves
Microsoft warns that audio enhancements can sometimes cause audio problems, and its troubleshooting guidance recommends turning them off for the affected output device as a test (Microsoft Support). Use the same Audio enhancements setting you found earlier. Note its current value before changing it, so you can return to it if the change does not help. If you switched to a third-party equalizer and the problem continues, remove or disable that software before testing further.
No single frequency curve is established as suitable for every listener, room, or device. Make small adjustments, listen with familiar material, and reset to flat if the result sounds worse.
Current Microsoft guidance was reviewed in October 2026. Menu labels and available effects can change with Windows updates and driver releases, so use the labels you see on your own screen as the final reference.
