To adjust a Hall-effect controller’s dead zone, start in the affected game’s stick settings and change the center dead zone in small steps. Raise it if the stick moves your character while untouched; lower it if small intended movements do not register. If the game has no such setting, check the controller maker’s app, on-device settings, and instructions for your exact model. There is no universal menu or ideal value.
What a center dead zone does
A center dead zone is a small range around a stick’s resting position that the game or controller ignores. Increasing it can suppress unwanted input near the center. Decreasing it can make subtle movements register sooner, but may also make unintended movement more noticeable.

Hall-effect describes how the stick senses movement; it does not guarantee that every controller, game, or firmware uses the same dead-zone behavior. A Hall-effect stick can still produce unwanted input in a particular setup, and zero dead zone is not automatically the best setting. GuliKit’s FAQ says users can adjust the center dead zone in game settings or enable a controller dead-zone mode if joystick behavior affects control: GuliKit FAQ.

Adjust the dead zone in the game first
- Identify the setup. Note the controller model, platform, and game. Also identify whether the problem is movement while the stick is untouched or missed/sluggish small movements.
- Open the game’s controller or stick settings. Look for a center-dead-zone control. Menu names and availability vary by game.
- Change only the center dead zone, a little at a time. If the stick causes movement at rest, increase it slightly. If small intended movements are missed, decrease it slightly.
- Test in the same game. Repeat the same kind of movement that exposed the problem. Continue with small adjustments until control feels reliable; do not assume one value will suit every game or controller.
The official sources reviewed do not establish a universally correct percentage or a recommended numeric recipe. Treat the result as a game- and setup-specific adjustment rather than a fixed target.

If the game has no dead-zone setting
Check the controller maker’s companion software, on-device settings, and current instructions for your exact model. These controls are not consistent across manufacturers or product families:
- PowerA: The company directs users to Gamer HQ for Xbox controllers and PC HQ for PC controllers. Which app applies depends on the supported controller family. See PowerA support.
- GuliKit: Its FAQ describes adjusting the center dead zone in game settings or enabling a controller dead-zone mode. The FAQ gives the button combination “Settings Key” + “Screenshot Key” for that mode; confirm it applies to your model before using it. See GuliKit FAQ.
- 8BitDo: Software features and procedures are product-specific. Consult the instructions for your controller rather than transferring another model’s steps; 8BitDo’s support materials provide product information and instructions.
If both the game and controller software or firmware offer a dead-zone control, adjust one layer at a time and retest. Changing multiple layers together makes it harder to tell which setting changed the behavior.

- Versatile compatibility: supports Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One X/S consoles and PC Win10 and above (including the game platform Steam).
- Precise control: features Hall joysticks and Hall triggers for a comfortable feeling, long service life and improved game accuracy.
- Plug and Play Convenience: Wired USB connection (removable) for easy setup and instant play without the need for additional drivers.
- Customizable experience: Includes 2 custom backbuttons that allow users to eliminate false triggers and improve their gaming experience.
- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
Dead-zone adjustment is not calibration
Dead-zone tuning changes how much input around the stick’s center is ignored. Calibration, when a model supports it, sets or checks the stick’s center or range. Calibration does not automatically change the game’s dead zone, and the two controls are not interchangeable.

Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use calibration only if the center or range appears incorrect, and follow the procedure for the exact controller. For example, 8BitDo’s instructions for the Ultimate 3-mode Controller for Xbox describe calibration through Ultimate Software X or a specified controller button sequence; the procedure includes moving the sticks to the edge and rotating them slowly. That is a model-specific example, not a universal Hall-effect or 8BitDo calibration method. See the 8BitDo support instructions.

Verify the result in your game
Test again in the game where the issue occurs, using the same controller connection and input style. A setting may have no effect if the game does not support the selected controller input style. Steam’s published support instructions in this context cover the Steam Controller (2015), not a current, universal Steam Input menu path for every controller. See Steam Controller (2015) support and Steam’s controller-input guidance.
If the adjustment does not help, check whether the game or controller app is applying a separate dead zone, then consult the controller’s model-specific instructions. Change one setting at a time so you can identify which layer affects the result.
