Change brightness with the keyboard keys
Press the backlight-up key to raise illumination or the backlight-down key to lower it. Logitech documents eight brightness levels for the original MX Keys. The keyboard also uses an ambient light sensor, so the selected brightness may respond to the room rather than behave like a fixed manual setting.

Logitech gives these examples for the original MX Keys: below 100 lux, level L2 (25%); between 100 and 200 lux, L4 (50%); and above 200 lux, L0 (no backlight). Adjust the backlight timeout in Logi Options+
- Open Logi Options+ and select your MX Keys from the device list.
- Open Backlighting.
- Adjust the duration control shown for your keyboard to change how long the backlight stays on.
Logitech’s keyboard backlight guide confirms that MX Keys settings in Logi Options+ include brightness and duration adjustments. It does not specify a universal timeout value, slider range, or default, so use the options displayed in your installation rather than relying on a particular number.

Confirm which MX Keys you have
The original full-size MX Keys, MX Keys S, and MX Keys Mini are distinct models. Logitech’s support page for the MX Keys S names a Backlighting Duration slider and an Automatic Brightness slider; those labels are model-specific and may not match the original MX Keys interface. Check the model name before following model-specific screen directions. See Logitech’s MX Keys S backlighting instructions.
If the backlight will not turn on
- Check the room lighting. The MX Keys sensor adapts illumination to ambient light; Logitech says the backlight can be off in bright conditions.
- Check the battery. Logitech also lists low battery as a condition that can prevent the backlight from turning on.
- Check the selected device in Options+. If the Backlighting controls or wording differ, verify the exact keyboard model. Logitech confirms MX Keys support in Options+, but does not promise identical controls across app releases.
The original MX Keys’ sensor examples and operating caveats are documented in Logitech’s MX Keys support page. The documented thresholds do not establish that a user can override the sensor or force illumination in every environment.
