WooCommerce has no built-in way to show different prices to different customer groups. You add role-based pricing with a pricing or wholesale extension. The sequence is the same for most of them: make sure the WordPress roles exist, choose whether rules apply store-wide, per product or in bulk, then test each role as a logged-in customer. Menu names and features differ by extension, so this guide covers the decisions and checks that apply to all of them.
Step-by-step setup
1. Define your pricing groups
List who gets which price: wholesale buyers, members, approved business accounts, or something else. Then decide how customers get a role. You can assign it manually. You can also let people request it at registration. Some extensions, such as Custom Roles & Pricing, document a role-selection option at registration and a manual approval setting, so a store manager can vet applicants before the discount applies.

2. Choose an extension that fits your rule model
A basic store may only need a role multiplier or a fixed price on a few products. A wholesale operation often needs more: bulk editing, quantity thresholds, hidden prices, role creation, customer-specific exceptions, stock controls or a registration form. Documented WooCommerce extensions differ on these points, so match the tool to your needs before you buy. See the comparison checklist below.

Don’t assume the pricing extension creates roles. WooCommerce Role Based Pricing says it does not. Its documentation tells you to add roles with a role-editor plugin or another method. Other tools document built-in role management or role creation. Check your chosen extension’s documentation first, so you don’t install a role editor you don’t need.

4. Set the pricing scope
Most extensions offer some mix of three scopes:
- Global: a role-wide multiplier or adjustment across the catalog.
- Per product: a fixed price, or a percentage or fixed increase or reduction, on individual products.
- Bulk or category: one rule applied to selected products or categories.
Global and bulk rules save repetitive editing. They also create exceptions you must check, especially how sale prices are handled.
5. Configure variations and quantity conditions
Check whether a rule applies to every variation or needs explicit variation rules, and whether bulk variation editing is supported. The Role Based Pricing documentation says its workflow has no bulk update for attributes and variations. It also says bulk discounts apply the same way to all variations of a variable product. Set minimum or maximum quantities only if your wholesale offer needs them. When enforcement is on, a shopper outside the range may be blocked from buying, so write clear error messages.

6. Decide what visitors can see
Some extensions can hide prices or add-to-cart buttons from guests or selected roles, and show role-specific messages. Choose one policy:
- Show retail prices to guests and lower prices after login.
- Require login before any price appears.
- Show a prompt that points to your wholesale application page.
7. Test the customer journey
Create a test account for each role and log in as each one. Check:
- Product pages and shop listings.
- Each variation of variable products.
- Cart and checkout totals.
- Products that are on sale.
- Quantities just inside and just outside any threshold.
- A logged-out guest view.
Which approach fits your store?
| Approach | Useful when | Verify |
|---|---|---|
| Global multiplier or role-wide adjustment | The same discount or markup should apply across most of the catalog. | Sale-price handling, exclusions, and whether individual products need overrides. |
| Per-product rules | Only selected products or variations need special role prices. | How much work it is to maintain many products, and how variable products are handled. |
| Bulk or category rules | A role gets a consistent deal across chosen products or categories. | Rule precedence, variation behavior, and whether future products are included. |
| Wholesale/B2B extension | You also need wholesale registration, role management, visibility rules or stock controls. | Which features your edition includes, and whether it fits your checkout and add-ons. |
Extension comparison checklist
Vendor documentation describes these as real differences between extensions. It does not support naming one best option, so compare them yourself:
- Does it create roles, or must you add them elsewhere?
- Does it support global, per-product and bulk or category rules?
- Does it support fixed prices, percentage adjustments, or both?
- Does it support bulk editing, and how does it handle variations?
- Does it support quantity thresholds?
- Does it support customer-specific overrides?
- Does it hide prices or the cart button from guests or roles?
- How does it treat tax display?
- Is it compatible with your product add-ons?
Caveats that cause problems
- Add-on compatibility: the Role Based Pricing documentation says it is not currently compatible with product options or add-ons plugins. The other documents reviewed do not give a full compatibility matrix. Check the current documentation and test your own plugin stack on a staging site.
- Bulk rules and variations: a bulk rule can’t give different variations different discounts in the workflow described above. Use explicit variation rules where the extension supports them.
- Quantity limits: an enforced minimum or maximum can stop a purchase at checkout. Test the boundary quantities.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I set different prices for different user roles?
Install a role-based pricing extension, make sure the roles exist, then add a global multiplier, per-product price or bulk rule for each role. Log in as a test user in each role to confirm the prices.
Can I manage wholesale and retail customers in one store?
Yes. Wholesale customers get a dedicated role. Retail shoppers and guests keep the standard prices, and you can optionally hide or show prices by role.
