How to Add Widgets to OBS Studio and XSplit

Use OBS Browser Source or XSplit Webpage to add a widget URL, then size and layer it for your scene.

Add a hosted widget to OBS Studio with a Browser Source, or add one to XSplit Broadcaster with Add Source > Webpage. Paste the widget provider’s URL, set its display area, then place it above the video or other sources it should overlay. XSplit also offers some built-in platform widgets through its source menu and Plugin Store.

Before you start: choose the right kind of widget

If a service gives you a widget or overlay URL, use the web-page source in your broadcasting app. Provider instructions may call the link an “Overlay URL,” “Widget URL,” or “Alert URL.” OBS calls its web-page source Browser Source; XSplit Broadcaster calls its generic option Webpage.

XSplit also documents platform-specific widget categories, including Facebook Live, Twitch, and YouTube Live. Availability and installation can vary: XSplit’s Twitch widgets, for example, are not pre-installed and must be installed through the Plugin Store. OBS’s documented alert workflow uses a provider URL and does not require a plugin.

Add a widget to OBS Studio

  1. Select the scene. In OBS, choose the scene where the widget should appear.
  2. Add a Browser Source. In the Sources dock, click + and choose Browser. OBS describes Browser Source as a way to add a webpage to a scene, commonly for alert overlays and chat boxes.
  3. Enter the widget URL and dimensions. Paste the link from the widget provider into the URL field. Set width and height to fit the overlay and your canvas. OBS’s documented default browser viewport is 800 by 600 pixels; that is a starting size, not a requirement. To load a locally saved page instead, enable Local file and select the file.
  4. Save, position, and resize. Confirm the source properties, then use the preview to place and resize the widget. For exact placement or dimensions, right-click the source and choose Edit Transform.
  5. Set the layer order. In the Sources list, move the widget above any source it needs to cover, such as the gameplay or camera layer. Sources higher in the list appear above lower sources.
  6. Refresh if the page is stale. Open the Browser Source properties and use the control to refresh the current page’s cache if the widget is not showing updated content.

OBS’s official alert tutorial uses Streamlabs and StreamElements as examples of services that provide overlay or widget URLs. Follow the provider’s own instructions for generating the correct link and configuring what the widget displays.

Add a widget to XSplit Broadcaster

  1. Select the scene or layout. Choose the stage where you want the widget.
  2. Add a Webpage source. Choose Add Source > Webpage, enter the widget URL, and confirm. XSplit’s Webpage source can also open a locally saved webpage.
  3. Set its display options. Adjust the screen area, transparency, and scrollbar visibility to suit the widget. XSplit also documents a 60 FPS option for Webpage sources; enabling it requires more CPU and GPU resources.
  4. Arrange it on the stage. Resize and position the source on the canvas so it fits the stream layout and does not obscure content unintentionally.
  5. Check platform widgets if appropriate. Open Add Source and check the available platform-specific categories or Plugin Store. For Twitch widgets, install the relevant items through the Plugin Store; XSplit’s setup guide also describes authorizing the account for alerts and connecting the account or channel for chat features.

Fix common widget display problems

  • The widget is missing: Check that the URL was copied completely from the provider and that the source is in the intended scene or layout. In OBS, check whether the Browser Source needs its page cache refreshed.
  • The widget is cropped or too large: Adjust the Browser Source width and height in OBS or the Webpage display area and source size in XSplit, then reposition it on the canvas.
  • The widget is behind another element: In OBS, move it higher in the Sources list. In XSplit, rearrange the sources on the stage so the intended overlay is visible.
  • A local page does not load: Confirm that the correct file is selected—use Local file in OBS Browser Source properties or browse to the saved webpage in XSplit’s Webpage source.
  • The XSplit webpage uses too many resources: If you enabled the 60 FPS option, try disabling it. XSplit notes that this setting requires more CPU and GPU resources.
  • A built-in Twitch widget is unavailable in XSplit: Check the Plugin Store; the documented Twitch widgets are not pre-installed. Complete the required account authorization or channel connection for the specific alert or chat feature.
