If your PC has no built-in Wi-Fi, add a compatible wireless network adapter—usually a USB Wi-Fi adapter—or connect by Ethernet instead. First check Windows Device Manager to confirm that a wireless adapter is not already installed; if one is present but Wi-Fi is unavailable, investigate its driver or device state before buying hardware.
Check whether the PC already has Wi-Fi hardware
- In Windows, open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters and look for an adapter with “wireless” in its name.
If an adapter is listed, the PC already has wireless hardware. A missing or unavailable Wi-Fi option may instead involve the adapter’s driver or device state. If no wireless adapter appears, the PC needs wireless hardware to join a Wi-Fi network. Microsoft describes a wireless network adapter as hardware that connects a device to a wireless network: Microsoft’s Wi-Fi guidance.

Choose how to connect

For a USB Wi-Fi adapter, check the exact product’s Windows support, connection interface, supported bands and standards, and driver setup before purchase. A desktop may also accept an internal card, but confirm the computer and card requirements rather than assuming a free-looking slot is compatible.

Follow the adapter manufacturer’s instructions for connecting the device and installing its driver. If Windows needs a driver and the PC is offline, Microsoft advises downloading the manufacturer’s driver using another device, copying it to a USB flash drive, and installing it on the PC. A driver can help Windows use an adapter that is present; it cannot replace missing wireless hardware.

Join a Wi-Fi network in Windows
- After Windows detects the wireless adapter, open the Windows network controls. The menu wording and layout vary by Windows version.
- Select the Wi-Fi network you want to join and choose Connect.
- Enter the network password when prompted.
For the security setting, Microsoft recommends WPA3 when both the router and PC support it. Support depends on the specific hardware and setup, so do not assume an adapter supports WPA3 without checking its specifications. See Microsoft’s instructions for connecting to Wi-Fi in Windows.
Use a wired or cellular alternative when Wi-Fi is not needed
Ethernet
If the PC is close enough to the router, a wired Ethernet connection may be simpler. If the PC lacks an Ethernet jack, a USB-to-Ethernet adapter can provide one; you will also need a network cable and an available router Ethernet port. This creates a wired connection, not Wi-Fi.

Phone hotspot
A supported phone hotspot can temporarily share the phone’s cellular connection with the PC. Check your mobile plan’s hotspot rules, data allowance, and charges before using it, because the PC’s activity draws on that plan’s data.

Some PCs can connect through a SIM slot or eSIM, but this requires compatible PC hardware and eligible carrier or service support. Check both before relying on it.
