Store the image or a durable reference with the listing, show it in the directory card, and define how it is refreshed and what appears when it fails. For place-focused listings, Google Places photos are another option, but they have specific attribution and freshness requirements.
Choose a thumbnail source
There are three practical approaches. The right one depends on whether you need a view of the listed website, a preview supplied by that website, or a photo of the physical place.

| Approach | What it provides | Key considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Website screenshot | A visual snapshot rendered at a viewport you choose. Screenshot services document capture and image-sizing controls, including ScreenshotOne’s response and sizing options and Thum.io’s resizing and cropping. | Rendering quality, viewport, latency, cost, refresh behavior, storage, and sites that block automated access. |
| Open Graph preview image | An image and related metadata provided by the site when available. OpenGraph.io documents metadata extraction; Thum.io describes site previews using screenshot images as Open Graph images. | Whether a usable image exists, its dimensions and quality, freshness, and a fallback for missing or unsuitable metadata. |
| Google Places photo | A photo associated with a place listing, retrieved through Places API requests. See Google’s Place Photos (New) documentation. | Whether the listing is a place, API requirements, attribution, and photo-name expiry and caching constraints. |
These options are not interchangeable: a Places photo depicts a location, while a screenshot depicts a website and an Open Graph image is whatever preview the site supplies. Compare image rights and source, quality at the card’s actual size, freshness, operational cost, and provider constraints; the cited documentation does not establish a universally best method.
Build a thumbnail flow for directory listings
Treat the thumbnail as listing data, rather than trying to take a screenshot whenever a visitor opens a directory page. A typical flow obtains an image, creates a card-sized rendition when needed, stores or references it, and records enough information to manage its source and freshness.
#1 Best Overall
- Create a mix using audio, music and voice tracks and recordings.
- Customize your tracks with amazing effects and helpful editing tools.
- Use tools like the Beat Maker and Midi Creator.
- Work efficiently by using Bookmarks and tools like Effect Chain, which allow you to apply multiple effects at a time
- Use one of the many other NCH multimedia applications that are integrated with MixPad.
- Select the source. Check for a usable site-provided preview image first if that suits the listing. If it is absent or unsuitable, consider generating a screenshot. For place-oriented listings, evaluate a Places photo separately.
- Capture or retrieve consistently. Choose a common viewport and target dimensions that work for the directory cards. Screenshot services document viewport and output-sizing controls; for example, ScreenshotOne supports width and height while preserving aspect ratio, and Thum.io documents resizing by width and cropping.
- Prepare the card image. Size or crop the output for the card layout, and decide how to handle images with a different aspect ratio. Keep the display dimensions predictable so the card does not shift while an image loads.
- Save provenance with the listing. Record the listing’s source URL, when the image was captured or retrieved, and any applicable creator, credit, copyright, license, or license-page information. This is implementation guidance, not a prescribed directory schema.
- Set refresh and failure behavior. Choose a freshness policy that fits the directory, and provide a fallback or retry path when capture or metadata retrieval fails. Make clear in your own data whether an image is stale; a thumbnail is a snapshot, not a live view.
Set image dimensions and rendering behavior
A thumbnail can look very different depending on viewport, cropping, and target dimensions. Choose a viewport that makes representative business sites legible, then inspect the result at the size used in the card. ScreenshotOne documents viewport sizing and resized output; Thum.io documents width resizing and cropping. Test representative listings before applying one configuration across the directory.
- Prefer a consistent card aspect ratio and decide whether the image should be cropped or fit inside the available area.
- Check how small text, mobile layouts, long pages, and sites with cookie overlays appear at the chosen viewport.
- Define behavior for missing metadata, inaccessible sites, and images that fail to load; do not leave an empty or broken image as the only outcome.
- Keep refresh timing as an explicit operational choice. The cited service documentation does not prescribe a universal refresh interval.
Handle Google Places photos correctly
Places photos are suited to place listings, not as substitutes for screenshots of a business’s website. Google’s Place Photos (New) request requires a photo resource name and API key, plus maxHeightPx, maxWidthPx, or both. The documented dimension values run from 1 to 4800 pixels, and the service preserves the image’s aspect ratio when scaling. Google’s exact requirement is: “You must specify either maxHeightPx, or maxWidthPx, or both.”

- Used Book in Good Condition
- Obtain a current photo resource name from a fresh Place Details, Nearby Search, or Text Search response.
- Do not cache photo names: Google warns that names can expire.
- If the response includes author attributions, include the required attribution when displaying the photo.
Follow the current Place Photos (New) documentation for request construction and response handling.
Track credits and licensing information
Keep relevant image credit and licensing details in the listing or image record so your display and maintenance process can honor them. Google Search Central documents structured data and IPTC metadata for image licensing and credit. Supported ImageObject fields include contentUrl and at least one of creator, creditText, copyrightNotice, or license; acquireLicensePage is recommended where applicable. See Google’s image license metadata guidance.
Rank #3
Metadata helps describe an image; it does not grant permission to use it. Establish that you may use an image under its applicable terms before displaying it, and do not treat a publicly accessible preview as automatically free to reuse.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshoot missing or poor thumbnails
- No Open Graph image is returned: The page may not provide a usable preview image. Fall back to a generated screenshot or a neutral directory placeholder.
- The screenshot is blank or incomplete: Check whether the site requires more time to render, uses delayed content, or blocks automated access. Test a representative URL and use a deliberate fallback when capture fails.
- The thumbnail crops important content: Adjust the screenshot viewport, output dimensions, or crop behavior, then review it at the actual card size.
- A Places photo request fails: Verify that the request has a current photo resource name and API key, and includes at least one of the required maximum-dimension parameters. Refresh the photo name from a current Places response rather than reusing a cached name.
- A displayed Places photo lacks attribution: Check whether the response includes author-attribution information and render it as required.
- An old image remains after the website changes: Apply the directory’s refresh policy and record capture or retrieval times so stale snapshots can be identified.
Performance, reliability, and cost decisions
Capture and metadata retrieval are external operations, so make them part of listing ingestion or a refresh workflow rather than a dependency of every directory-page request. Keep a usable fallback for failures, and retain the capture or retrieval time so the interface and operations can distinguish a snapshot from a current website view.

Compare providers on the options that affect your directory: viewport and output control, latency, reliability for the sites you list, storage and retention, refresh needs, and price at your expected usage. The cited documentation does not establish universal prices, success rates, or a recommended refresh interval; check current provider terms and pricing before choosing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a website thumbnail be used as a live preview of the listed site?
No. A screenshot or preview image is a snapshot; it does not show the current page interactively.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsDoes adding license metadata mean I have permission to reuse an image?
No. Metadata records image information but does not grant usage rights.
