To add a thumbnail to a GeoDirectory listing, upload an image in its Images field (key: post_images) and move the image you want displayed first. GeoDirectory treats the first image as the featured image. Then use the GD Post Images element in the archive or detail template to display it. If by “website thumbnail” you mean a screenshot of the site linked in the listing, GeoDirectory also documents a URL Screenshot image type; that route depends on the listing’s URL field key and template setup.
The documented setup is general to GeoDirectory and WordPress; the reviewed documentation does not describe a separate India-specific setting. Check labels and behavior against your installed GeoDirectory version, theme, and listing fields.

Choose the kind of thumbnail you need
A directory thumbnail can be an image uploaded for the business—such as its logo—or a screenshot generated from the website URL on the listing. GeoDirectory supports both approaches, but they have different setup requirements.

Add an uploaded image to a listing
- Open the listing in the WordPress backend, or use the site’s frontend Add Listing form if your account and site settings permit it. The backend guide uses Places > Add New; the frontend guide describes an Add Listing page. If the site needs a different listing-entry page, set it at GeoDirectory – Settings – General – Pages – Add Listing page. That page’s form is rendered by the GD Add Listing element.
- Find the listing’s Images field and upload the image. GeoDirectory identifies the field key as
post_images. Images are not required for a listing. - Arrange the images so the one intended for the thumbnail is first. GeoDirectory uses the first image as the featured image, including when a single image is displayed.
- Open the GeoDirectory archive item or detail template and configure its GD Post Images element. Choose a single image for a thumbnail, or a slider or gallery if the page should show multiple listing images.
- Preview the listing in both its directory archive and detail page. Some themes also place the featured image in a banner or header. If that happens and is not wanted, check GeoDirectory – Settings – Design – Detail for the setting that disables theme featured-image output, then confirm the result with the active theme.
Show a screenshot of the website in a listing
GeoDirectory’s Post Images documentation includes URL Screenshot as an image type. It describes a convention of adding _screenshot to the URL field key: for a field named url, the example key is url_screenshot. First check the actual key used for the website URL on your site; the example only applies when that field is named url.
#1 Best Overall
The listing setup guide also describes a website screenshot as a possible fallback when a listing has no image. The documentation presents this in different contexts, so do not assume every installation will generate and show a screenshot without configuration. Confirm the image type, URL field key, and archive or detail template behavior on the site.
Choose the display and image size
Single image, slider, or gallery
In GD Post Images, select Single Image for one thumbnail, Slider for multiple images with navigation, or Gallery for a grid. The element also supports fallback image types and an image-cover setting. Cover behavior can crop image edges to fill the display area, so preview the result rather than assuming the entire image will remain visible.
WordPress image sizes and theme behavior
The available image sizes are controlled through WordPress media settings, and the GD Post Images element lets you select a size. GeoDirectory documents responsive output by default, but a theme may affect which image is served. If an image looks blurry or is cropped unexpectedly, check the selected size in the element, the available sizes under WordPress Settings – Media, and the active theme’s image behavior.
Set a fallback for listings without images
GeoDirectory supports fallback images for listings that have no uploaded image. Depending on the configuration, the fallback sequence can include a company logo, a category default image, a custom-post-type default image, or a listing default image. The widget uses the first fallback type with a value.
- Set a category default image on the category edit screen.
- Set a custom-post-type default in that post type’s settings.
- Set a listing default through GeoDirectory’s design or archive settings.
- Set
fallback_types=0if no fallback should appear.
Troubleshoot thumbnail problems
The wrong listing image appears
Check the order in the listing’s Images field. The first image is the featured image, so move the intended thumbnail into first position and preview the archive and detail templates again.
A website screenshot does not appear
Verify that the listing has a website URL and identify that field’s actual key. GeoDirectory’s documented example assumes a field named url and uses url_screenshot; a differently named field may require a corresponding configuration. Also check that the template’s GD Post Images element is configured for the intended image type. The documentation does not establish that screenshots are generated automatically on every installation.
The image is blurry or unexpectedly cropped
Inspect the selected WordPress image size in GD Post Images, the available dimensions under Settings – Media, and the element’s cover behavior. Then check whether the active theme changes the responsive image output.
A banner or header shows an image you did not expect
The active theme may display the listing’s featured image in its header or banner. Review GeoDirectory – Settings – Design – Detail for the option to disable theme featured-image output, and verify how the theme renders the listing.
Or skip the browser setup
If you want to capture a listing website as an image without configuring a browser capture workflow, ScreenshotNeo provides a website screenshot API. A GET request takes a URL and returns an image or PDF. Its capture options include PNG, JPEG, or WebP output; the code below saves a WebP screenshot of the example site.
ScreenshotNeo API documentation
curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp
ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each cleanup step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and each response reports the page verdict and billing status in headers. It also has an MCP server with screenshot, page-info, and PDF-capture tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month without a card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
