How to Add Website Thumbnail Images to a Hostinger Portfolio

Hostinger’s link-preview image is uploaded, not automatically generated from a live-page screenshot. Set one default image or assign a Social image to individual portfolio pages.

To show an image when someone shares your Hostinger portfolio link, upload a link-preview image in Hostinger Website Builder or set a page’s Social image. Hostinger recommends an image size of 1200×630 px. This sets the preview image; it does not automatically take a screenshot of your live portfolio.

What Hostinger means by a website thumbnail

For a shared link, the “thumbnail” is usually the image displayed in a link preview. Hostinger’s Website Builder calls the site-wide setting a link-preview image and the per-page setting a Social image. Its documented workflow is to upload an image, not to generate a screenshot of the live page. Hostinger’s Website Builder instructions and AI Builder manual-mode instructions do not document an automatic screenshot-to-thumbnail feature.

If you want a screenshot-style portfolio visual, create or capture it separately, then upload it as the image for the site or relevant page. That is a workaround using an image you supply, not a built-in Hostinger screenshot-generation step. The instructions below cover Website Builder and AI Builder manual mode; they should not be assumed to describe WordPress settings.

Choose an image that fits the portfolio

Hostinger recommends 1200×630 px for a link-preview image in both documented editor workflows. Treat this as Hostinger’s recommendation, not a guarantee that every social platform will display the full image without cropping.

  • Use an image that clearly represents the portfolio or the particular project being shared.
  • Keep the main subject and any important text near the center, so they are more likely to remain visible if a service crops or scales the preview.
  • For AI Builder manual mode, Hostinger’s troubleshooting guidance lists PNG, JPG, and JPEG formats and a maximum file size of 15 MB. These constraints are specific to that guidance and should not be generalized to every Hostinger product.

Hostinger’s general image guidance discusses WebP for regular website images and image editing options such as crop and position. Those general site-image recommendations are separate from the link-preview size recommendation and AI Builder manual-mode troubleshooting formats. See Hostinger’s general image guidance.

Set a site-wide preview image in Hostinger Website Builder

Use the general website setting when one image should represent the portfolio across its pages. Hostinger says the site-wide image applies to all pages unless an individual page has its own image.

  1. Prepare the image, preferably at Hostinger’s recommended 1200×630 px.
  2. In Website Builder, open the general website settings and find the link-preview image setting.
  3. Select Add image or Replace image, then upload the image you prepared.
  4. Save your changes and update the website. The change is not live merely because the image has been selected in the editor.
  5. Share the portfolio URL and inspect the preview in the service where you plan to post it.

Set a different image for an individual page

Use a page-specific image when a project page should show its own artwork instead of the portfolio-wide default.

  1. In Website Builder, expand Pages and navigation.
  2. Open the settings for the page you want to customize.
  3. Choose Social image and upload the page-specific image. Hostinger recommends 1200×630 px for this image too.
  4. Save the change and update the website.
  5. Share that page’s URL and check its preview in the target service.

Set the image in Hostinger AI Builder manual mode

Hostinger’s AI Builder manual-mode guidance documents a similar distinction between a general website image and an individual page’s Social image.

  1. Open general settings for a default image, or open the settings of the individual page that needs a different image.
  2. Choose the link-preview image setting or Social image, as appropriate, and upload your file.
  3. Use 1200×630 px as Hostinger’s recommended size. For this AI Builder manual-mode workflow, the troubleshooting article lists PNG, JPG, or JPEG and a maximum file size of 15 MB.
  4. Save and update the site before checking the shared link.

Why the old image may still appear

A saved change may take several hours to show in a link preview. Also, sharing services can keep previously fetched title, description, and image data in a cache. Hostinger explains that social platforms may retain this cached preview information.

  • The site still shows the previous image: confirm that you saved and updated the site, then allow time for the change to propagate.
  • The image is missing: check that the upload completed and, in AI Builder manual mode, that the file uses PNG, JPG, or JPEG and is no larger than 15 MB.
  • Only a social platform shows the old preview: use that service’s cache-refresh tool if it provides one, request a fresh fetch, and share the URL again.
  • Edits behave unexpectedly: Hostinger advises against editing in multiple builder tabs or on multiple devices at the same time.

Website Builder’s preview and mobile mode can help you review the site layout, but they do not prove how every external service will crop or render its link card. Hostinger’s preview instructions cover reviewing the site itself.

If you need to capture the live portfolio page as an image before uploading it, ScreenshotNeo can return a screenshot from one GET request. It is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers. The capture URL below uses the portfolio page you want to represent; replace it with your page URL. curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

Replace https://stripe.com with your portfolio or project-page URL. ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture; each step can be turned off. Bot checks or CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and the response identifies the page verdict and billing status. Its MCP server offers screenshot and PDF tools for AI agents, including Claude and Cursor. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
