To add website previews to a PHP link directory, fetch each submitted page’s metadata on your server, store the result, and render it as an escaped card. Start with Open Graph tags—especially og:title, og:description, and og:image—and fall back to the document title, URL hostname, and a local placeholder when fields are missing. The PHP pattern works in India as it does elsewhere; the important differences are your hosting region, audience latency, and operational requirements.
Choose metadata for a directory card, not a full embed
A typical preview needs a title, short description, thumbnail, and link to the destination. Open Graph is designed to describe a page for sharing and is a sensible first source for these fields. Its core properties include og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url; og:description is commonly used for the card description. See the Open Graph protocol.

Use a predictable fallback order: Open Graph title, then the HTML document title, then the submitted URL’s hostname. For description, use Open Graph description and otherwise show no description or a neutral message. For the image, use a validated Open Graph image URL or a locally served placeholder. Do not make an empty field look like reliable metadata.

When oEmbed is useful
Use oEmbed for an allow-listed service when its structured response or media representation adds value—for example, when playback or interaction is central to the directory entry. It supports discovery through HTML link elements or HTTP Link headers; its response types include link, photo, video, and rich. A plain title-description-thumbnail card usually does not need an interactive embed. Rich provider HTML adds complexity and security risk, so do not insert it directly into your directory page.

Fetch once when a link is submitted, then store the preview
Do not fetch the destination afresh every time somebody views a directory page. That makes page rendering depend on third-party sites, adds latency, and multiplies outbound requests. Fetch during submission or in a background job, save the normalized fields and fetch status, and serve the stored preview to visitors. Refresh on a controlled schedule rather than in the visitor request.
Suggested record fields
canonical_url: the validated destination URL that your directory links to.fetched_atandfetch_status: when extraction ran and whether it succeeded, failed, or was skipped.title,description,image_url, andsite_name: normalized preview values, with absent values stored as null.
Cache both successful and unsuccessful lookups for a policy-appropriate interval. A failed fetch should not cause every visitor to retry it. Refresh asynchronously or through a scheduled worker so slow remote sites do not hold up a directory page.
Build a bounded, defensive PHP fetcher
The key risk is not parsing HTML; it is letting a user-controlled URL make your server contact internal or otherwise unsafe network destinations. Treat the URL as untrusted input. The following example shows the extraction shape, but it is not a complete production SSRF defense: production code must enforce address and redirect policy at the connection layer before each request, including the address actually used for the connection.

Accept only absolute http or https URLs. Reject malformed URLs, embedded credentials, disallowed ports, and hosts your service does not permit. Resolve and validate DNS results before every outbound request and redirect. Block loopback, private, link-local, multicast, and other reserved ranges for IPv4 and IPv6, and defend against DNS rebinding by ensuring the validated address is the one used for the connection. A hostname check performed only before a later DNS lookup is not enough.

2. Fetch only a small HTML response
Use cURL with a short connection timeout, bounded total timeout, a small redirect limit, and a strict response-byte cap. Request HTML and reject unexpected content types. Do not forward a visitor’s cookies, authorization headers, or internal service credentials to the target. Revalidate every redirect destination; do not let the HTTP client silently follow a redirect to a blocked address.
3. Parse metadata and normalize it
Use a tolerant HTML parser such as PHP’s DOM extension rather than broad regular expressions. Prefer Open Graph values, then use the document title and hostname fallbacks. Normalize whitespace, impose field-length limits, and validate the image URL separately. Illustrative parsing function
This focused example parses already-fetched HTML. It deliberately does not perform the network request: add the SSRF controls, byte/time limits, content-type checks, and redirect handling above before using fetched content in production.

Render the card safely
Escape all metadata at output time, including text and attribute values. Do not assume a remote page’s metadata is safe because it came from a meta tag. In PHP, use htmlspecialchars with quote escaping and UTF-8 encoding for HTML text and attributes.

</a>Only render an href that passed your scheme and host policy; HTML escaping does not make a dangerous URL scheme safe. Keep provider-supplied rich HTML out of the directory origin. If a rich embed is essential, use a tightly controlled, sandboxed iframe on an appropriate isolated origin, and review the provider content and permissions. The oEmbed specification discusses security considerations, including unsafe schemes and untrusted HTML.
Protect the fetch pipeline from abuse
- Restrict schemes to HTTP and HTTPS, reject URL credentials, and decide which ports and hostnames are allowed.
- Block private, loopback, link-local, multicast, and reserved IPv4 and IPv6 ranges. Re-check DNS and the actual connected address for the initial URL and each redirect.
- Cap connection and total time, response bytes, redirects, and parsed field lengths. Reject unexpected content types rather than parsing arbitrary downloads.
- Do not send cookies, authorization headers, or internal credentials to submitted destinations.
- Validate image URLs separately, and consider a restrictive Content Security Policy and a local placeholder image.
- Escape every value at output. Never treat metadata or oEmbed HTML as trusted markup.
These controls protect both the directory operator and the network where PHP runs. A URL preview endpoint can otherwise be abused to probe internal services or consume resources with slow or oversized responses.

Self-hosting gives you control over fetch policy, storage, and refresh behavior, but you own edge cases such as redirects, metadata parsing, and operational limits. A hosted unfurl API can reduce some maintenance; compare supported sites, caching, privacy, latency, cost, and operational requirements before adopting one. For a directory whose core need is a card rather than a rich embed, begin with a small self-hosted extractor and measure failures and refresh costs. Add provider-specific oEmbed integrations only for services where the richer representation materially improves the entry. If selecting an oEmbed PHP library, the specification lists options including Essence and Embera; check their current maintenance, PHP compatibility, dependency health, and provider coverage before depending on one: oEmbed implementations and specification.

The PHP, Open Graph, and oEmbed implementation pattern is not specific to India. For an India-operated directory, choose hosting and caching based on where the audience is, which regions need low latency, and where your infrastructure runs. Remote metadata fetching may take longer for destinations far from your server, so asynchronous refresh and cached records help avoid adding that delay to a visitor’s page load.
