Adding USB-C charging to a Game Boy Color requires installing a charging board and a separate Li-ion battery; it is not a cable-only upgrade. The standard giltesa kit keeps the stock voltage regulator, but installation requires soldering and cutting the shell for the USB-C port. Its instructions also say not to play while charging. If your build has an IPS screen and you want charge-and-play support, giltesa’s PRO board is a different option—but check its exact revision.
Choose the right kind of charging mod
There are two distinct ways to add rechargeable power, and only one adds a USB-C socket to the console itself. The standard giltesa kit installs a USB-C charging board. Its PRO version adds power and audio features intended for IPS builds. A separate FunnyPlaying approach, as documented by ConsoleMods, uses the Game Boy Color’s original power port with a USB-to-barrel cable rather than adding a USB-C port.

For a stock-screen console where the goal is simply USB-C charging, the standard kit is the relevant option. For an IPS build, compare the PRO board’s features and exact revision with your screen and installation plan. The standard kit’s compatibility list covers CGB-CPU-01 through CGB-CPU-06; if using a replacement regulator, the seller says it must accept the kit’s 2.75–4.2V output range.
What you need before opening the console
The standard kit package includes the charging board, light board, battery cable with a JST SH1.0 connector, light-board cable, and diffuser. It does not include the Li-ion battery. The seller gives 102050 and 123048 as battery examples, not as a guarantee that either will fit every shell or revision. Confirm the battery’s physical dimensions, connector, voltage, and clearance in your particular build before buying or assembling it. See the kit specifications.

The manufacturer’s installation documentation lists Phillips #00 and tri-wing screwdrivers, cutting pliers, a cutter, tweezers, soldering iron, solder, flux, and isopropyl alcohol. You will also need the selected battery. This is not a solder-free installation.
How installation works
Use the guide for your exact kit revision rather than relying on a generic sequence: board shape and connector placement changed between versions. The guide covers disassembly, handling the display cable, mounting and soldering the board, optional light-board installation, opening the shell for the USB-C socket, and battery-compartment adjustments. If you are not comfortable soldering or modifying the case, have the work done by someone experienced with handheld-console repairs.

- Check compatibility and parts. Confirm your motherboard revision, kit revision, regulator, battery connector, battery dimensions, and shell clearance against the seller’s compatibility details.
- Disassemble carefully. Follow the installation guide for opening the console and handling its display cable.
- Mount and solder the board. Install the charging board and connect it as shown for your version. The light board is an installation option described in the guide.
- Cut the USB-C opening. The shell needs a visible opening at the port. The guide also describes battery-compartment adjustments that depend on the shell and battery. For standard-kit v1.7, the manufacturer changed the board shape and moved the battery connector so cutting plastic for that connector was no longer required; this change does not remove the USB-C port opening.
- Fit the battery and reassemble. Check that the battery and wiring clear the shell before closing it, then follow the guide’s final assembly and checks.
Can you charge and play at the same time?
Not with the standard kit: its seller explicitly says simultaneous play and charging are unsupported and should not be done. Do not apply the PRO board’s behavior to the standard board.

Will the mod work with an IPS screen?
The standard kit is designed around the original voltage regulator and does not include a 5V converter or amplifier. The PRO board is the version the seller specifies for IPS screens, and it combines charging, a 5V converter, and an audio amplifier. Confirm your screen and board combination against the PRO documentation; the product description does not establish compatibility with every third-party screen or other internal modification.
What runtime should you expect?
Published examples are specific to their stated setups, not guarantees for every battery, screen, game, or board. The standard project README reports 8 hours 40 minutes from a 1500 mAh battery but does not state test conditions.

The PRO product page reports a 6-hour-30-minute example using a 1800 mAh battery, an IPS V3 laminated screen at 100% brightness, system sound at 100%, amplifier at 50%, and games played from a flash card. It also reports about two hours while charging and playing in a separate example using an IPS V3 laminated screen at 100% brightness, system sound at 20%, amplifier at 50%, a flash cart, and a 1500 mAh battery. These figures describe those setups only.

The project README identifies a TP4056 charger and DW01A over-discharge protection; the product descriptions also claim overvoltage and undervoltage protection. Those descriptions do not establish independent safety certification. Use a compatible battery, avoid damaged cells or wiring, and follow the instructions for your board revision. The standard kit’s charging restriction remains: do not play while it is charging.
