The fastest way to add an upsell in WooCommerce is to edit a product, open Product Data → Linked Products, search the Upsells field, select one or more upgrade products, and click Update. Those recommendations normally appear on that product’s page, while cross-sells are reserved for complementary items in the cart. For cart- or checkout-specific offers, conditional rules, or recommendations generated from order data, use a WooCommerce recommendation extension instead of maintaining every product relationship manually.

What an upsell means in WooCommerce
An upsell is an alternative to the item a shopper is viewing. The alternative is usually a higher-quality, higher-capacity, or higher-priced version that could produce a better result for that shopper. For example, a customer viewing a basic storage product might see a larger-capacity version as an upsell. The purpose is not simply to show a more expensive product; it is to present a credible improvement over the current choice.

WooCommerce distinguishes three related recommendation types:
- Upsells: alternatives configured for a product and generally displayed on that product’s page.
- Cross-sells: complementary products, such as accessories or add-ons, configured for the cart.
- Related products: recommendations WooCommerce generates automatically from shared categories or tags.
Use the upsell field when the shopper might replace the original item. Use cross-sells when the shopper is likely to keep the original item and add something that works with it. Treat related products as an automatic, broader discovery mechanism rather than a deliberately chosen upgrade path.

How to add a native upsell to a product
Native linked products are the best starting point for a small catalog or a store where each offer needs deliberate merchandising. No recommendation extension is needed.
- In the WordPress administrator, go to WooCommerce → Products.
- Select the product whose page should show the offer.
- In the Product Data panel, open Linked Products.
- Click the Upsells field and search for the products you want to recommend. Select the alternatives that provide a meaningful improvement for someone considering the current product.
- Click Update to save the relationship.
The product’s theme controls where the linked-product block appears, normally below the product description. WooCommerce notes that linked-product output is sorted randomly, so the order in which you select products should not be treated as a guaranteed display order.

If the proposed item is an accessory that should be added alongside the original product, put it in Cross-sells, not Upsells. A case, spare part, subscription add-on, or compatible cable is usually complementary. A larger, faster, or more capable version of the product is an upsell because it replaces the original choice.
Repeat the setup for each source product
Native recommendations are configured product by product. If a store has several entry-level products and each has a corresponding premium alternative, edit each source product and create the appropriate relationship. This manual approach gives precise control, but it also creates maintenance work whenever a product is discontinued, replaced, or repositioned.
How upsells differ from cross-sells and related products
| Recommendation type | Shopper decision | Typical location | How products are selected |
|---|---|---|---|
| Upsell | Replace the viewed product with a better alternative | Product page | Manually selected in Product Data → Linked Products → Upsells |
| Cross-sell | Keep the original product and add a complementary item | Cart | Manually selected in the Cross-sells field |
| Related products | Explore items that may be relevant | WooCommerce-generated store surfaces | Automatically inferred from shared categories or tags |
This distinction matters because placement follows intent. A replacement offer belongs near the product decision, whereas an accessory offer makes more sense after the shopper has committed the main item and is reviewing the cart.

Where native upsells appear and what you can control
Native linked products are attached to a product, not to a checkout condition. The theme determines the visual placement of the upsell block, and WooCommerce’s linked-product output is randomized. The native interface therefore gives you product-level curation but not a rule builder for cart totals, quantities, coupon codes, or checkout placement.

Choosing an implementation
Choose the simplest method that can express the decision you want to make. Native linked products are precise and easy to understand. Extension-based tools become useful when placement, conditions, ranking, or automation matter more than one-to-one manual curation.
| Approach | Selection method | Available placements | Targeting and ranking | Maintenance profile |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Native linked products | Manual product-by-product selection | Product page | Hand-picked upsells; cross-sells for the cart; related products from shared categories or tags | Low setup complexity, but relationships must be maintained manually |
| Cart and Checkout Upsell extension | Configured offers triggered by rules | Cart and checkout, with configurable placement | Target products or categories; conditions can use cart contents, quantities, subtotals, totals, item counts, or coupon codes; priorities, copy, and button behavior are configurable | More setup, with centralized rule maintenance |
| AI Product Recommendations | AI-generated recommendations or custom rules | Product, cart, and checkout pages | Filters and ranking factors can shape the recommendations | Less manual selection when AI is used; custom rules still require management |
| Product Recommendations | Recommendations based on rules and order history | Product, cart, checkout, category, and order-received pages | Frequently-bought-together and related-product suggestions can use historical orders | Broader automated coverage across the store, with configuration and data oversight required |
These are extension-based implementations. Check current availability, compatibility, and pricing before installing an extension because those details can change.
Showing conditional offers in the cart or checkout
Use the Cart and Checkout Upsell extension when the offer depends on what the shopper has already added. It is designed for placements beyond the normal product-page block and lets you define both the message and the trigger.

What you can target
- A particular product or product category in the cart.
- A minimum or specific quantity.
- A subtotal or total threshold.
- A required number of items.
- A coupon code.
How to structure a rule
- Define the cart or checkout placement where the offer should appear.
- Choose the product or category that activates the rule.
- Add the quantity, subtotal, total, item-count, or coupon condition that reflects the buying scenario.
- Set a priority if several offers could apply at once.
- Write the offer text and configure the button behavior.
- Save the rule and test it with a cart that satisfies the condition, then test a cart that does not.
Priorities are important when rules overlap. Without a deliberate priority order, several valid offers may compete for the same space or the most relevant offer may not be the one shoppers see first.
Examples of useful conditions
- When a shopper adds a product from a particular category, offer a compatible upgrade in the cart.
- When the cart reaches a quantity threshold, present a higher-value alternative or a related add-on.
- When a coupon code is used, display a context-specific offer rather than a generic recommendation.
- When the cart total crosses a threshold, present an upgrade that is consistent with the products already selected.
These examples describe the rule types the extension supports; the specific products and thresholds should be based on your catalog economics and customer behavior.
Using AI or custom rules for recommendations
AI Product Recommendations is appropriate when manually choosing every recommendation is impractical or when you want a mixture of automated and explicit logic. It supports AI-generated suggestions as well as custom rules, with placements on product, cart, and checkout pages.
Control the recommendation set with filters
Filters let you constrain what the system is allowed to suggest before ranking the candidates. Use them to keep recommendations within a compatible category, price range, or other catalog boundary that makes sense for the shopper’s current product. A filter is especially useful when an unrestricted recommendation could be technically related but commercially irrelevant.

Recommendation systems can rank candidates using signals such as popularity, sales, rating, price, stock, or newness. Decide which signal matches the page’s job. Popularity can provide a safe default for discovery; stock can prevent an unavailable item from becoming the lead suggestion; price can keep an upgrade within a realistic step-up range; and newness can give recently introduced products visibility. Do not assume that one ranking signal is best for every category or placement.

Separate AI selection from business rules
AI can select candidates, but your store still needs boundaries. Use custom rules and filters to enforce compatibility, category restrictions, or placement-specific goals, then let automated ranking choose among the acceptable products. This avoids treating an algorithmic suggestion as a substitute for basic merchandising logic.
Using order history for frequently bought together recommendations
Product Recommendations can use order data to produce frequently-bought-together and related-product suggestions. Its supported surfaces include product, cart, checkout, category, and order-received pages, so it can continue recommending products after the initial product decision.
Order-history recommendations are different from a manually curated upgrade. They answer questions such as “What do shoppers commonly buy with this?” rather than “What is the better version of this item?” Use them for accessories, bundles, and discovery, while keeping explicit upsells for alternatives where the upgrade relationship is known.
Recommended Free Tools
Because these recommendations depend on order data, review the outputs for relevance and make sure the products surfaced still fit your current catalog. Products that were historically purchased together may no longer be suitable after a product change, compatibility update, or category restructure.
A practical decision framework
Choose native linked products when
- The catalog is small enough for product-by-product curation.
- You know the correct upgrade for each product.
- The recommendation belongs on the product page.
- You do not need quantity, total, coupon, or cart-content conditions.
Choose Cart and Checkout Upsell when
- The offer must appear in the cart or checkout.
- The trigger depends on products, categories, quantities, totals, item counts, or coupon codes.
- You need priorities, custom offer copy, or button behavior.
Choose AI Product Recommendations when
- You want AI-generated suggestions, custom rules, or both.
- You need filters and ranking controls.
- You want recommendations on product, cart, and checkout pages without manually selecting every candidate.
Choose Product Recommendations when
- Order history can inform frequently-bought-together or related suggestions.
- You want coverage across product, cart, checkout, category, and order-received pages.
- You are prepared to review automated outputs as the catalog and buying patterns change.
How to plan the offers before configuring them
- Define the shopper decision. Write down whether the customer should replace the current product or add something alongside it. This determines upsell versus cross-sell.
- Map the page to the decision. Put replacement offers on the product page; use cart or checkout placements for offers triggered by the existing order.
- Set a credible step-up. Choose an alternative whose added capability or quality is understandable from the source product. Avoid presenting a premium item with no clear benefit.
- Choose the selection method. Use manual links for known relationships, conditional rules for cart logic, and automated recommendations when catalog scale or historical behavior justifies them.
- Decide what must be excluded. Filters and rules should prevent irrelevant, incompatible, or otherwise unsuitable products from being suggested.
- Assign priorities. If multiple rules can match, decide which message should win before shoppers encounter competing offers.
- Write concise copy. The text should explain the improvement or complement, and the button should make the next action clear.
Testing and measuring performance
Official WooCommerce documentation does not establish a universal conversion-rate or average-order-value increase from upsells. Treat every recommendation as a merchandising hypothesis and measure it in your own analytics rather than promising a standard revenue lift.
Best Value
- Keep track of everything from attendance to test scores
- Spiral bound
- Measures 8-1/2" x 11"
Track these metrics
- Add-on attach rate: the proportion of relevant orders that include the recommended item.
- Average order value: compare orders exposed to the offer with a suitable unexposed baseline.
- Margin: an upsell that raises revenue but lowers contribution may not improve the business outcome.
- Checkout completion: monitor whether an additional offer distracts from or interrupts purchase completion.
Test the actual paths
- Open a product with a native upsell and confirm the linked-product block appears in the expected theme location.
- Repeat the test after refreshing, because linked-product output is sorted randomly.
- Build a cart that meets each conditional rule and verify the intended placement, text, and button.
- Build a cart that fails the condition and confirm the offer is not shown.
- Check overlapping rules in priority order.
- Review product, cart, checkout, category, and order-received placements separately when using an automated recommendation extension.
Common setup mistakes and fixes
An accessory was added as an upsell
Move a complementary item to the Cross-sells field so it is associated with the cart rather than presented as a replacement on the product page.
The upsell was saved but appears in an unexpected order
Native linked-product output is randomized. The theme controls the block’s location, and the selection sequence is not a reliable ordering mechanism.
The offer does not appear in the cart or checkout
A native product-page upsell is not a cart or checkout rule. Use a Cart and Checkout Upsell implementation when placement must be conditional or tied to cart contents.
Several automated offers compete
Review rule priorities and narrow the conditions or filters so that the most relevant offer has a clear path to display.
Recommendations are technically related but commercially weak
Constrain candidates with filters or custom rules, then select ranking factors that match the page’s purpose. Automated ranking should operate within a sensible product set, not replace compatibility and merchandising boundaries.
A maintainable WooCommerce upsell workflow
Start with a small set of high-confidence native links for your most important products. Label each relationship as either a replacement or a complement so that upsells and cross-sells remain consistent. As the catalog grows, move conditions that repeat across many products into cart or checkout rules. Add AI or order-history recommendations when the store has a clear need for broader automated coverage, and review those outputs whenever products, categories, stock status, or buying patterns change.
Document the purpose of each rule, its trigger, its priority, and the metric that will determine whether it stays. This keeps the recommendation system understandable when multiple people manage the store and prevents old product relationships from quietly surviving catalog changes.
Quick Recap
Final checklist
- Use Product Data → Linked Products → Upsells for a deliberate product-page alternative.
- Use Cross-sells for complementary items intended for the cart.
- Remember that related products are generated from shared categories or tags.
- Use cart and checkout rules for product, category, quantity, subtotal, total, item-count, or coupon conditions.
- Use AI recommendations for filtered, ranked suggestions on product, cart, and checkout pages.
- Use order-history recommendations for frequently bought together and related suggestions across the wider store journey.
- Test every trigger and placement, account for randomized native output, and measure attach rate, average order value, margin, and checkout completion.
