How to Add the Downloads Folder to the Dock on a Mac

Drag Downloads from Finder to the Dock’s files-and-folders side of the separator. The Dock item is an alias, so removing it does not delete the folder.

To add Downloads to the Mac Dock, find the folder in Finder and drag it to the Dock’s files-and-folders side of the separator. If it is already there, you do not need to add it again: Apple says the Dock comes with a Downloads folder by default.

Find Downloads in Finder

  1. Open Finder.
  2. Locate the Downloads folder. If it is not visible in the Finder sidebar, look for it in your home folder.

Add Downloads to the Dock

  1. Drag the Downloads folder to the Dock’s files-and-folders side: to the right of the separator when the Dock is along the bottom of the screen, or below the separator when the Dock is at the side.
  2. Release the folder when it is in position. The Dock item is an alias to the folder, not a replacement for it.

Apple’s instructions for adding Dock items are in Use the Dock on Mac. Apps belong on the other side of the separator; folders and files belong on the files-and-folders side.

Choose how Downloads appears and opens

Control-click the Downloads item in the Dock to choose whether it displays as a folder or a stack, set a sort order, and select a fan, grid, or list view. These are display options, not competing features; pick the presentation that makes the contents easiest for you to scan.

Click the Dock item to expand it, then select a file to open it. To open the Downloads folder in Finder instead, Control-click the Dock item and choose “Open in Finder.” Apple describes these options in Use folders in the Dock on Mac.

If Downloads is missing from the Dock

The Downloads folder itself is normally still on the Mac even if its Dock item was removed. Find it in Finder and drag it back to the files-and-folders side. Removing an item from the Dock removes only its alias; it does not delete the original folder or its contents.

Downloads is the default location for files downloaded from the internet, received as attachments, or accepted through AirDrop. Depending on the chosen display, its Dock icon may appear as a blue folder with a download symbol or as a stack of files.
