To make donation messages speak during a livestream, enable text-to-speech (TTS) for the donation or tip event in your alert service, then add that service’s alert overlay to your streaming scene. In Streamlabs, configure it under Alert Box → Tips → Text-to-Speech, add the Alert Box to your scene, and test it before going live.
Set up donation TTS in Streamlabs
- Open the alert settings. In the Streamlabs dashboard, open Alert Box, choose Tips (or Bits if you want those events to trigger speech), and open Text-to-Speech.
- Choose when messages are spoken. Set the minimum tip amount. This can help keep small tips from triggering speech, but it does not replace moderation.
- Choose a voice and enable TTS. Streamlabs’ support guide says its TTS offers over 50 voices, including multiple languages; that is Streamlabs’ own feature claim and may change.
- Review spam and profanity controls. TTS is off by default, according to Streamlabs. Its guide describes a spam filter for repeated-character messages and a default profanity filter that prevents filtered words from appearing on screen and being spoken. Review the default and any custom-word settings before enabling viewer-submitted speech. If messages are cut off, Streamlabs suggests turning off the spam filter; doing so also removes that particular safeguard.
Viewer-submitted speech can be abused. Streamlabs warns: “TTS can be a fun tool, but given the nature of the internet, it can get offensive if used to troll creators.” Set the threshold and filters for the kind of stream you run, and be ready to disable TTS if unwanted messages get through. Add the alert overlay to your streaming scene
Configuring TTS in the alert service is only half the setup: the corresponding Alert Box or overlay must also be included in the scene that goes live.

Streamlabs Desktop
In Streamlabs Desktop, add an Alert Box from the Sources area. Confirm that the source is active in the scene you intend to stream.

OBS Studio or other streaming software
- In the Streamlabs dashboard, copy the Alert Box Widget URL.
- In OBS, select the scene where alerts should appear, add a Browser source, and paste the URL.
- Set the source dimensions to suit your overlay layout. Keep it visible in the scene, but position it so alerts do not cover essential content.
If you use the Streamlabs OBS plugin, its guide also describes adding the Alert Box widget through that plugin. The plugin is not required for alerts in OBS: OBS Project documents the provider-neutral approach of adding an alert provider’s URL as a Browser source. Streamlabs’ alert setup guide covers its available routes, while OBS Project’s alerts tutorial explains Browser-source setup.
Test before going live
- Use the alert service’s dashboard test function or live preview to trigger a sample alert.
- Check that the alert appears in the correct scene and that the message is audible in your stream mix.
- Confirm that the voice, threshold, profanity filtering, and spam behavior work as intended. If you changed the overlay URL or scene, test again.
Streamlabs documents dashboard testing and live preview in its alert setup guide. Do not wait until a real donation to discover that the overlay is missing or speech is muted.

What about StreamElements and other alert services?
StreamElements is another relevant alert service. Its quick-start guide discusses overlay setup, alerts that can include donation text, and chat TTS through its loyalty system. That guide does not provide a complete, current click-by-click setup for donation-triggered TTS, so check the provider’s current dashboard and documentation for the exact event controls before relying on it.

When choosing or configuring any provider, check whether it supports the event you need—such as tips, Bits, or a chat redemption—and whether it lets you set a minimum amount, select a voice, control message length or spam, and moderate spoken content. You can attach alerts to OBS through a Browser source; a provider-specific OBS plugin is not inherently necessary. Read StreamElements’ quick-start guide.

Troubleshooting donation TTS
- The alert appears, but no speech plays: Verify that TTS is enabled for the relevant event type, that the test meets the minimum amount, and that the streaming scene includes the correct Alert Box or overlay.
- No alert appears: Check that the overlay URL is in a Browser source in the scene being streamed, or that the Alert Box source is present in Streamlabs Desktop. Test the source from the provider dashboard.
- Messages are cut off: Streamlabs’ guide suggests disabling its spam filter as a possible fix. Consider the moderation trade-off before doing so.
- Offensive or unwanted text gets through: Review the profanity filter and custom-word settings, raise the minimum amount if appropriate, and disable TTS or the alert while you adjust moderation.
- The test works in the dashboard but not in the stream: Check that the correct scene is live and that its alert source is not hidden or muted. Test the scene’s audible output, not just the provider’s preview.
