What BeamMP tags do
BeamMP tags are searchable labels attached to a server listing. They let players narrow the server browser to characteristics such as freeroam, roleplay, racing, weather, language, or mod support. BeamMP documentation describes tags as a way for people to search for a specific type of server.

Adding Racing does not create a race mode, and adding Modded does not install any files for connecting players. The server should actually provide whatever each tag promises.
Tags also do not control whether a server appears in the public list. A server with excellent tags can remain invisible if it is configured as private, lacks a required authentication key, cannot be reached through the network, or is hidden by the player’s search filters.

Before you edit the configuration
Start the server once
Run the BeamMP server executable at least once before looking for the configuration. On its first launch, it generates ServerConfig.toml in the server’s working directory. If you launch the executable from its installation folder, the file is normally created beside it.
If you cannot find the file, check the shortcut or service definition used to start the server. A shortcut can specify a different “Start in” directory, and a hosting panel may set another working directory. Search the folder from which the process is actually launched rather than creating a second configuration in an unrelated location.
Use a text editor that preserves TOML
Open the file in a plain-text editor. Do not use a word processor that adds formatting characters or converts quotation marks. Make a backup copy before editing so you can restore the previous configuration if the server fails to start.
Understand the relevant section
BeamMP uses TOML syntax. The tags setting belongs under the [General] header. The generated default is documented as:

Tags = "Freeroam"Keep the section header, the equals sign, and the quotation marks. Replace only the value when changing tags.

Step-by-step: add or replace server tags
- Stop the BeamMP server if it is running. Stopping first prevents the process or a management panel from overwriting your edit when it shuts down.
- Open
ServerConfig.toml. Use the file generated in the server’s working directory, not an example file or an unused copy. - Find the
[General]section. Scroll to the existingTagsline. The default generated value is usuallyTags = "Freeroam". - Replace the value with a quoted, comma-separated list. For example:
[General]
Tags = "Events,Offroad,Lang:English"- Choose only accurate labels. If the server supports several characteristics, include one tag for each meaningful characteristic. Do not add labels merely because they are popular search terms.
- Save the file as plain text. Keep the filename exactly
ServerConfig.toml. Verify that your editor did not append.txt. - Start or restart the BeamMP server. The documented configuration workflow loads this setting at startup; no live reload for
Tagsis documented. - Check the public listing from a client. Search for one of the tags and confirm that the server description and actual gameplay match the labels.
BeamMP states that multiple tags are separated by commas and that matching is not case-sensitive. These two forms therefore represent the same labels for search purposes:

Tags = "events,offroad,lang:english"Use consistent capitalization anyway. It makes the configuration easier for administrators to read and audit.
BeamMP’s documented tag list
The following labels are documented for server search. Spelling, punctuation, and the colon in language and subtype tags should be retained. A server can contain several values in one quoted string.

Use the broad Gamemode label when appropriate, then add a specific mode for the actual rules. A specific mode is more useful than a generic label alone. |

How to choose a useful tag combination
Start with the server’s main reason to join, then add only the details a player would use in a search. A practical selection order is:
- Primary gameplay: choose a label such as
Freeroam,Roleplay,Economy, orDrift. - Event or discipline: add a racing, off-road, destruction, or gamemode label if it is central to the server.
- Conditions: add weather or time labels only when those conditions are persistent or intentionally scheduled.
- Communication: add the language labels that reflect actual moderation and chat support.
- Mod status: distinguish
VanillafromModded, and identify a documented mod only when players will encounter it. - Community expectations: use
Events,Leaderboard,Scenarios, orModeratedwhen those features are maintained.
For example, an English-language, moderated off-road event server might use:

Tags = "Events,Offroad,Crawling,Lang:English,Moderated"A server that runs an unmodified nighttime roleplay environment could use:
Tags = "Roleplay,Night,Lang:English,Vanilla"Do not add every possible label. An overloaded list makes search results less trustworthy and gives players expectations the server may not meet. Update tags when the server’s permanent rules, map rotation, language policy, or mod requirements change.
Set tags with the BEAMMP_TAGS environment variable
BeamMP’s manual lists BEAMMP_TAGS as a supported environment variable. Environment variables override corresponding values in ServerConfig.toml, which is useful for containers, service managers, deployment scripts, and hosting panels that generate configuration at launch.
Set the variable to the same comma-separated string you would put in the file:
BEAMMP_TAGS=Events,Offroad,Lang:EnglishThe exact place to define it depends on how the server is launched. In a service definition or hosting panel, add it to that service’s environment settings. In a shell, define it before starting the executable. Keep the file and environment value synchronized if both are maintained; otherwise, the environment value wins and can make an apparently correct file look ineffective.

After changing the variable, restart the service. A running process will not normally acquire a new environment value until it is started again.

- Stop the server cleanly.
- Save the TOML file or update the service environment.
- Start the server from the same working directory and launch method used in normal operation.
- Watch the startup output for configuration or TOML parse errors.
- Open the BeamMP server browser from a separate client and search using one distinctive tag.
- Join, if possible, and confirm that the advertised mode, language, weather, and mod requirements are accurate.
If the server fails immediately after an edit, restore the backup and start again. Then reapply the change while checking quotation marks, commas, and the section name. A malformed TOML line can prevent the entire configuration from loading, not just the tags.
Why a tagged server may not appear in the list
Private = true
BeamMP’s setup documentation states that a server will not show in the server list while Private = true. Tags do not override this setting. If you intend a public listing, set the private option according to the current setup instructions and restart the server.
Missing or invalid authentication
Public access also requires an AuthKey according to the setup guide. Confirm that the key is present, valid, and associated with the server installation. A correct Tags line cannot compensate for failed authentication.
Port forwarding or firewall problems
Home-hosted servers must be reachable through the required network port. Check router port forwarding, the operating system firewall, and any upstream firewall. A server can be running locally and still fail to register or accept remote connections when inbound traffic is blocked.

Clear client-side filters and search by the exact server name or a distinctive tag. Remember that tags are matched without regard to letter case, but a misspelled or undocumented label may not correspond to the filter a player selected.
The wrong configuration file was edited
Multiple installations, test copies, and service accounts commonly create confusion. Compare the file path with the process working directory and the startup script. If BEAMMP_TAGS is defined, it overrides the file and may explain why edits appear to have no effect.
The server was not restarted
Stop and start the process after every tag change. There is no documented live reload for this setting, so editing the file while the server is running does not guarantee that the current process will notice it.
Common configuration mistakes
- Unquoted value:
Tags = Events,Offroadis not the documented form. Use one quoted string. - Separate lines for separate tags: Keep one
Tagskey and separate values with commas inside the quotes. - Wrong section: A
Tagskey outside[General]may not be read as the server setting. - Typographic quotation marks: Replace curly quotes with ordinary ASCII double quotes.
- Trailing filename extension: Ensure the editor saved
ServerConfig.toml, notServerConfig.toml.txt. - Misleading labels: Remove tags for modes, mods, languages, or conditions that the server no longer provides.
- Assuming tags install content: Players may still need the required BeamNG.drive or BeamMP content separately; tags only describe the server.
Home hosting versus a VPS
BeamMP’s setup guide characterizes home hosting as free, while VPS hosting is easier and more secure. That distinction concerns the hosting environment, not the tag syntax. On a home server, you are responsible for the router, firewall, uptime, and changing public address. A VPS generally provides a more controlled network and continuous availability, but it adds a hosting charge and administration work.
Whichever environment you choose, keep the configuration in the deployment location actually used by the running service. If a panel recreates ServerConfig.toml from environment variables, maintain BEAMMP_TAGS there rather than editing a temporary generated file.
A maintenance checklist for server owners
- Keep the
Tagsvalue under[General]. - Use one quoted, comma-separated string.
- Choose labels from BeamMP’s documented list and spell subtype tags correctly.
- Describe real gameplay, event types, conditions, languages, moderation, and mod requirements.
- Restart after changing the file or
BEAMMP_TAGS. - Check whether an environment variable is overriding the file.
- For public visibility, verify
Private, AuthKey, port forwarding, firewall rules, and client filters. - Review tags whenever the server’s rules or content change.
A minimal valid configuration entry is therefore:
[General]
Tags = "Freeroam"For a multi-characteristic server, expand the same line with accurate comma-separated labels and leave the rest of the generated configuration unchanged.
