How to Add Symbols in Microsoft Word: Characters, Codes, and Equations

Insert a character from Word’s symbol gallery, convert a known code, or use equation tools for structured math. Platform and font support can affect what you see.

To insert a symbol in desktop Word, place the cursor where it belongs, select Insert > Symbol, choose a listed character or More Symbols, then double-click the symbol. For a mathematical expression, use Word’s equation tools instead; for a symbol you use repeatedly, a keyboard shortcut or AutoCorrect entry can save time.

Insert a symbol from Word’s menu

  1. Click in the document where you want the character.
  2. Select Insert > Symbol.
  3. Choose a visible symbol, or select More Symbols to browse the larger collection.
  4. If needed, change the font or subset, select the character, and double-click it.
  5. Close the dialog. To resize the inserted character, select it and change its font size.

Microsoft documents this route for Word for Microsoft 365 and Word 2016–2024. The available characters depend on the selected font: as Microsoft notes in its Word symbol instructions, “the font you use is critical.” Segoe UI Symbol contains a large Unicode collection, but a font must still include the specific character you need.

Choose the right method for the character

Special characters and punctuation

For an em dash, section mark, or another character in Word’s dedicated list, open Insert > Symbol > More Symbols > Special Characters, select the character, and insert it. Some entries have shortcuts; Microsoft’s examples include Alt+Ctrl+C for the copyright symbol. See Microsoft’s instructions for symbols and special characters.

Accented letters

If you enter accented characters often, switching to the relevant keyboard layout may be convenient. For occasional use, the symbol dialog or a documented shortcut is an option. Microsoft gives Ctrl+Shift+~, followed by a, for ã and Ctrl+Shift+:, followed by u, for ü. Shortcuts can vary with keyboard layout and platform; consult the instructions for your version of Word.

Fractions

Word may automatically convert some common typed fractions, including 1/4, 1/2, and 3/4, to fraction glyphs. To browse other available glyphs, open More Symbols and choose the Number Forms subset, if available for the selected font. Only a limited set of common fractions has a single substitute character. For a fraction such as 8/9 that is not available as a glyph, format the numerator as superscript and denominator as subscript.

Insert a symbol using its character code

Code entry is useful when you already know the character’s code. In Insert > Symbol > More Symbols, select the character and check both Character code and From. The From field identifies whether the value is Unicode hexadecimal or a decimal symbol code; the keyboard method differs. Microsoft’s character-code guidance describes both methods.

Unicode hexadecimal: Alt+X

  1. Type the hexadecimal code at the insertion point.
  2. Press Alt+X to convert it to the character.

Microsoft’s examples include 221A followed by Alt+X for √ and 0024 followed by Alt+X for $. If the code comes directly after another character, select only the code before pressing Alt+X so Word does not convert neighboring text.

Decimal symbol code: Alt plus the numeric keypad

Hold Alt and type the decimal code using the numeric keypad, not the number row. Microsoft’s examples are Alt+0169 for © and Alt+0128 for €. Use four digits, including leading zeroes when necessary; Num Lock may need to be on. If your keyboard has no separate number pad, use the symbol menu instead.

Use equation tools for mathematical notation

A standalone math character can be inserted from the symbol gallery, but a full expression is better built as an equation. On desktop Word, select Insert > Equation > Insert New Equation, then choose from the Equation Symbols menu. Microsoft groups characters into sets such as Basic Math, Greek Letters, Operators, Arrows, and Geometry. See Microsoft’s equation instructions for Word.

In Word for the web, select Insert > Equation. The Equation Tools panel provides Symbols and Structures; build the expression in the panel, then choose Insert on page. The web equation workflow is distinct from the desktop symbol dialog, as described in Microsoft’s Word for the web equation guidance.

What differs on Mac and in Word for the web

Menu names are not identical across platforms. Microsoft’s cited Mac article documents Insert > Advanced Symbol, with Symbols and Special Characters tabs, for Office 2016 for Mac; it should not be assumed to describe newer Mac releases. The cited Word for the web instructions establish an equation-symbol workflow, not that every desktop symbol-dialog feature is available in the web app. Mobile-specific insertion steps are not established by the cited support guidance, so use the menus shown in your installed app rather than relying on desktop labels.

Fix a missing or incorrect symbol

  • The wrong character appears: verify the code type and value. Unicode hexadecimal uses Alt+X; decimal symbol codes use Alt plus the numeric keypad.
  • Adjacent text changes with the code: select only the hexadecimal code before pressing Alt+X.
  • A box or unexpected glyph appears: try a font that includes the character, such as Segoe UI Symbol for many Unicode symbols.
  • The desired fraction is not listed: check Number Forms with a different font, or format the numerator and denominator separately.
  • You need a clickable checkbox: a symbol inserted into text is static. Use Word’s checklist feature for an interactive checkbox instead.

For a character you insert repeatedly, Microsoft also suggests configuring AutoCorrect to replace a short typed sequence with the symbol.
