The chatbot is a separate optional step: approve it as a moderator in YouTube Studio. Connecting the accounts does not automatically add an overlay or enable the bot.
Choose how to connect StreamElements and YouTube
SE.Live brings StreamElements tools into OBS. You can instead use standard OBS streaming settings and add a StreamElements overlay as a browser source; this route does not require the SE.Live plugin. StreamElements documents both the account-connection and stream-key approaches, but does not publish a controlled performance comparison between them. StreamElements’ YouTube setup tutorial and its SE.Live installation guide explain the current setup options.

- Choose SE.Live if you want the StreamElements integration and related tools inside OBS, and your computer meets the installation requirements.
- Choose standard OBS setup if you prefer not to install SE.Live or want to configure YouTube streaming separately. You can still use a StreamElements overlay through a browser source.
Check compatibility and install SE.Live
StreamElements’ current getting-started documentation lists SE.Live for Windows and as a beta for macOS. On Windows, it specifies OBS Studio 31.x or newer. Installation requirements can change, so check the official getting-started page if your operating system, OBS version, or installation screens differ.

- Download and install SE.Live using the instructions on the StreamElements getting-started page.
- Reopen OBS and sign in through the StreamElements menu.
- Connect your YouTube account when prompted, following the account authorization flow.
Connect YouTube and configure OBS to stream
If you are not using SE.Live’s YouTube connection flow, configure YouTube in OBS with your stream key. StreamElements’ YouTube tutorial demonstrates selecting YouTube or YouTube Gaming as the OBS streaming service and entering the key from YouTube’s Encoder setup.

- In YouTube Studio, open the live-stream setup and locate the stream key under Encoder setup.
- In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube or YouTube Gaming as the service, and enter the stream key if using the manual configuration route.
- Save the setting. Start streaming from OBS when your YouTube broadcast is ready.
StreamElements’ tutorial warns: “never share your stream key!” Treat it like a password: do not paste it into a public chat, screenshot, or overlay. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before streaming again.
Add video and audio sources to the OBS scene
StreamElements’ tutorial shows adding a video capture device and an audio input capture source in OBS. These are OBS scene inputs, not requirements imposed by StreamElements; add the devices your broadcast actually uses.

- In the OBS Sources panel, select + and choose Video Capture Device if you are using a camera. Select the intended device and confirm the preview.
- Select + and choose Audio Input Capture to add a microphone or other input. Pick the correct device, then speak or make a test sound and check the OBS audio mixer.
Create or choose a StreamElements overlay
An overlay is the visual layer in your broadcast—such as alerts, labels, goals, or chat. StreamElements overlays are rendered in broadcast software through a browser source. StreamElements’ overlay documentation describes the components and browser-source approach.

- Customize the overlay and its AlertBox or other elements as needed.
- If you use the tutorial’s theme, it offers a static option for optimal CPU performance. Hide countdown, starting-soon, or frame layers that you do not want visible in the live scene.
- Copy the overlay URL from StreamElements. Keep it private if it provides access to a private overlay.
Add the overlay to an OBS scene
- In OBS, select the scene where the overlay should appear.
- In the Sources panel, select + → Browser, create a source, and paste the StreamElements overlay URL.
- Set the browser-source dimensions to match the canvas you intend to use. StreamElements’ tutorial uses 1920 by 1080 as its example; that is not a universal resolution requirement.
- Confirm and check the OBS preview. Resize or position the source only if the overlay design calls for it.
If the overlay is missing, confirm the URL and browser-source dimensions, then reopen the source properties and check the preview. An overlay added to one scene will not appear in a different scene unless you add or reuse it there.

Enable the StreamElements chatbot (optional)
The chatbot is separate from the overlay and the SE.Live connection. To let it join your YouTube broadcast, StreamElements says to add or approve its chatbot URL as a moderator in YouTube Studio. The broadcast must be public and live for the bot to join. StreamElements’ YouTube chatbot guide gives the moderator setup details.
- In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Community.
- Add or approve the StreamElements chatbot URL as a moderator.
- Start a public live broadcast and check the Live chat panel for the bot.
- Use Live chat rather than Top chat when checking messages; Top chat can hide bot messages.
Know which StreamElements features work on YouTube
Do not assume every feature shown in a Twitch-oriented StreamElements onboarding flow is available on YouTube. StreamElements says some loyalty-system features are not currently available for YouTube accounts, including giveaways, stream store, viewer queue, and media requests. Check the YouTube chatbot guide for the platform-specific caveats.

Troubleshoot common setup problems
- SE.Live will not install or connect: confirm that you are using Windows or the macOS beta, and, on Windows, OBS Studio 31.x or newer. Close OBS before installing, then reopen it and sign in through the StreamElements menu.
- OBS will not connect to YouTube: check that YouTube is selected as the OBS service and that the stream key was entered correctly. If the key may have been exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio rather than continuing to use it.
- The overlay does not appear: verify that you copied the correct overlay URL, added it as a Browser source, and used dimensions appropriate for your scene. Check the source preview in OBS.
- The chatbot is not visible: confirm it was added as a moderator, that the broadcast is public and live, and that you are viewing Live chat rather than Top chat.
- A loyalty feature is unavailable: it may be one of the YouTube limitations StreamElements lists, rather than a connection error. Giveaways, stream store, viewer queue, and media requests are among the features it identifies as unavailable for YouTube accounts.
