Google Cloud’s Node.js client supports prerecorded and streaming recognition; Vosk is an option to evaluate for offline recognition. Recognition supplies text—it does not, by itself, build the rest of a conversational assistant.
Choose hosted or offline recognition
The right recognizer depends on your deployment requirements. There is no universal winner for accuracy, latency, or cost: measure those on your own audio and infrastructure.
Google Cloud Speech-to-Text
Google’s Node.js client is @google-cloud/speech. The client reference gives npm install @google-cloud/speech as the installation command and lists a Google Cloud project, API enablement, billing, and local authentication among its quickstart prerequisites. The official microphone example uses Application Default Credentials (ADC). Follow Google’s current authentication instructions for your environment, and do not put a service-account secret in application source code.
Google advertises support for “85+ languages and variants” on its product page. That is a vendor-published capability claim, not a guarantee of recognition quality for a particular language, accent, or setting.

Vosk for local recognition
Vosk describes itself as an offline speech-recognition toolkit and identifies Node.js bindings, streaming recognition, small models, and virtual assistants among its capabilities and use cases. These are project descriptions, not an independent comparison or benchmark. Before choosing it, verify that the specific Node package, model, language, and runtime fit your application.
Separate audio capture from transcription
Your application first needs audio from a microphone, file, or other stream. Keep capture separate from recognition so you can handle device errors, silence, user turn boundaries, and stream completion without mixing those concerns into dialogue logic.

Google’s Node.js microphone-streaming sample uses node-record-lpcm16 with @google-cloud/speech. Treat it as an implementation example, not a guarantee that the same capture package works identically on every operating system. Check the package and device on each platform you support. A built-in or external microphone may be sufficient if your capture pipeline supports it; the sample does not require a specific model.
Transcribe a prerecorded audio file
For a file, Google’s quickstart flow creates a client, supplies an audio source and recognition configuration, calls recognize, then reads transcript alternatives from the response. This example follows that shape with the sample’s remote LINEAR16 audio:

}The sample’s LINEAR16, 16000 Hz, and en-US settings describe that example audio only. Set encoding, sample rate, and language code to match the audio you actually send. This file-oriented call is not a live microphone-streaming implementation.
Use streaming recognition for live microphone input
For a conversational assistant that listens while a person speaks, investigate streaming recognition. Google’s separate Node.js microphone example shows the live capture and streaming path; use it for stream wiring rather than treating the prerecorded-file call above as if it handled live input.

When adapting a streaming example, make the boundary between capture and recognition explicit. Your application should decide how it treats partial and final recognition results, empty results, recognition errors, silence, and the end of a user turn before passing usable text to its dialogue layer.

Google’s Speech-to-Text overview describes synchronous, asynchronous long-running, and streaming recognition. Synchronous recognition is for audio of one minute or less, according to that overview. Streaming is the documented mode to investigate for live microphone input; asynchronous recognition is another option for longer-running audio. Choose based on whether the input is a file or a live conversation and how your application needs to handle results.

Connect the transcript to assistant logic
Recognition turns audio into text. Your application still needs to interpret that text, decide what to do, and—if the assistant speaks—produce audio through a separate response and output path. Keep recognizer-specific code behind a boundary that returns text or recognition events, so the intent and dialogue layer does not depend on a particular audio-capture package.
Handle an empty transcript as a normal outcome rather than assuming every request contains recognized speech. For streaming, distinguish partial text from final text so the dialogue layer can avoid acting prematurely. Define what happens on capture failures and recognition errors, such as prompting the user to try again, rather than treating an error as a user command.
Test with the conditions your assistant will encounter
Evaluate the complete microphone-to-assistant path with representative users and environments. Include room noise, different speaking styles and accents, and vocabulary specific to your application. Measure recognition quality and end-to-end latency on your own audio; the cited provider materials do not establish a controlled head-to-head result for Google Cloud and Vosk.
