In a classic theme you add the link and matching target in the theme templates. In a block theme, assigning the main HTML element to the block that wraps primary content can make WordPress generate the Skip to Content link for you.

Do not judge the result from the home page alone. Headers, navigation, archives, search results, posts, pages and custom templates can use different markup. Test each template while logged out, and check both the visible focus state and where focus goes after activation.

What a skip link does and why it matters
A skip link is a short, normally hidden link that appears when a keyboard user begins tabbing through a page. Its purpose is to bypass repeated material such as the site header, utility links, search, social links and the primary navigation. The user can activate it once instead of pressing Tab through that entire block on every page.
WordPress describes skip links as “a mechanism that enables users to navigate directly to content or navigation on entering any given page.” This addresses WCAG 2.1 Success Criterion 2.4.1, Bypass Blocks, which requires a mechanism to bypass blocks of content repeated across web pages. The requirement is especially relevant to people who navigate sequentially with a keyboard or an assistive technology that follows keyboard focus.

A conforming implementation has four observable properties:
- The link is the first focusable item in the page’s normal tab order.
- Its
hreffragment identifies the primary content target. - It becomes clearly visible when it receives keyboard focus.
- Activating it moves the user into the main content, rather than merely leaving focus on the link while the viewport scrolls.
The link does not replace a correctly structured landmark. Use one primary <main> landmark for the page’s central content, and keep navigation, header and footer regions properly identified as well.

If a site mixes approaches, inspect the rendered page rather than relying on the theme label. A plugin, child theme or custom template can add another header or alter the tab order.
Classic themes: add the link and target
1. Put the link before the navigation
In a classic theme, place the anchor immediately after the opening <body> and before the header, navigation, search form or any other element that can receive focus. The link may sit outside a landmark; its position in the focus order is what matters.

</body>Most themes print the opening body tag in header.php. If the theme uses a body-hook function or a custom wrapper, use the earliest location that is guaranteed to render on every front-end template. Do not put this link as the first item inside the navigation list. That placement forces the keyboard user to tab through the navigation before reaching it, defeating its purpose.

2. Add one matching main target
The fragment after the hash and the target’s id must match character for character. href='#content' therefore requires <main id='content'>. IDs are case-sensitive in practice and must be unique within the document. If a template already gives its main element another ID, either use that existing value in the link or change both values together.
Use the semantic <main> element where possible. If the theme cannot use it, an element with role='main' can expose the landmark, but a real <main> is clearer and avoids duplicate or conflicting landmark semantics. Ensure that the target encloses the page’s primary content, not only a heading, a sidebar or a small subsection.
3. Cover every template
Do not add the anchor to a template that is used only by the home page. Check the single-post, page, blog-index, category or tag archive, date archive, author archive, search-results and 404 templates, plus any custom templates supplied by the theme or child theme. Shared header files should provide the link consistently, while each template must provide a corresponding main target.
Make the link hidden until focus, but never unreachable
A skip link can be visually hidden at rest to avoid adding a permanent banner for mouse users. It must remain in the document and in the keyboard focus order. Do not use display:none, visibility:hidden, the HTML hidden attribute or an off-screen rule that also removes it from accessibility-tree exposure.
Use the theme’s existing screen-reader-text utility when it has a tested focus state. If the utility is absent or its focus rules are uncertain, add a dedicated class. This fallback keeps the anchor available while moving it off-screen, then places it in a high, visible position when focused:

}Adapt the colors to the site’s design, but preserve a strong contrast between the link and its background. Make sure no header, cookie banner or sticky toolbar covers it. A large z-index helps, but it cannot fix a parent with clipping, a transformed stacking context or an overflow rule that cuts the link off. Test at narrow and wide viewport sizes.
Keep the browser’s focus indicator. Do not replace it with a color change that is difficult to see, and do not use a global rule such as outline: none unless an equally visible replacement is provided.

Ensure activation places focus in the main content
A normal fragment link usually scrolls the target into view. Depending on the browser and target markup, keyboard focus can remain on the skip-link anchor even though the viewport has moved. For a robust keyboard experience, make the main target programmatically focusable without adding it to the ordinary Tab sequence, then move focus to it when the link is activated.
Add tabindex='-1' to the main target. This permits script-assisted focus but does not create an extra stop when a user tabs normally:

</main>You can then add a small script near the end of the page or through the theme’s enqueued JavaScript. The script preserves the URL fragment, lets the browser perform its normal scroll, and explicitly focuses the destination:

});Only use this enhancement when the destination has a unique ID and supports focus. If a theme or accessibility plugin already supplies equivalent focus management, do not add a second handler that could create competing behavior. After activation, the next Tab should move to the first focusable control inside the main content, not back to the header.
Block themes: let WordPress generate the link
1. Open the template in the Site Editor
Go to Appearance → Editor, open Templates, and select each template that presents primary content. Depending on the WordPress version and theme, the content may be wrapped by a Group block, a Template Part, or a Query block. Select the outermost block that contains the article, page content or archive results, rather than a single paragraph or heading.

2. Assign the main HTML element
With the wrapper selected, open its block settings, expand Advanced, and set the HTML element or landmark to main. WordPress states that selecting a main landmark generates the Skip to Content link. Save the template and repeat the operation for templates that do not inherit the same wrapper.

<!-- /wp:group -->The exact serialized attributes can differ between WordPress releases and themes. The important result is a single primary <main> wrapper around the content and a generated skip link that appears before the other focusable blocks.
3. Check navigation behavior
The Navigation block supplies responsive and keyboard navigation, a navigation landmark and relevant ARIA attributes without requiring you to hand-code those pieces. It does not remove the need for a skip link. Confirm that the generated link comes before the Navigation block in the rendered DOM and that its focus style is visible against the theme’s header background.
4. Repeat for alternate templates
A block theme can have separate templates for the front page, index, single posts, pages, search, archives and 404 responses. A main landmark in one template does not prove that another template has one. Open each template in the editor, inspect the outer content wrapper and test the published view.
When more than one skip link is appropriate
One link to the primary content is the normal starting point. WordPress also permits multiple skip links when a site has several independent, substantial regions. For example, a complex application might offer links to the main navigation, the content area and the footer tools. Add another link only when the destination is a genuinely separate region that users may need to reach quickly.

Keep the links in a short, predictable sequence at the top of the document. Give each one a distinct destination and a clear label such as “Skip to main navigation” or “Skip to footer links.” Do not create several links that all land on the same element, and do not use a long list of minor headings as skip destinations.
Keyboard test procedure
Run the test in an unauthenticated front-end view, a private window or another browser. WordPress editing controls, an admin toolbar or a browser extension can change the tab order and hide template defects.
- Open the page and refresh with focus at the top. If necessary, click the browser chrome first and then return to the page without clicking a page control.
- Press Tab once. The first focusable item should be labeled “Skip to content” or an equivalent translation.
- Confirm that the link is visibly identifiable when focused. It should not be clipped, covered, low-contrast or visible only in a browser’s accessibility tree.
- Press Enter (or Return). The page may scroll or jump to the main area.
- Press Tab again. Focus should continue at the first focusable control inside the main content, bypassing header and navigation controls.
- Use Shift+Tab once to check that focus returns to the skip link or the expected preceding control, rather than entering an unexpected hidden element.
- Repeat the sequence on the home page, blog index, archive, single post, page, search results, 404 page and every custom template.

Common implementation mistakes
- Putting the link in the menu: a keyboard user must traverse the menu before reaching it.
- Using a mismatched fragment:
#main-contentwill not activate an element whose ID iscontent. - Reusing an ID: duplicate IDs make the browser choose an unpredictable destination.
- Hiding with display rules: a link that is removed from layout and the accessibility tree cannot be reached by keyboard.
- Removing focus outlines: the user loses the visual confirmation of where focus is.
- Targeting only the article heading: the destination should represent the main content region, including its first controls, not an arbitrary child.
- Adding positive tabindex values: values such as
tabindex='1'create a fragile custom order. Use normal source order andtabindex='-1'only for the programmatic destination. - Testing while logged in: the WordPress toolbar can become the first focusable item and mask a front-end problem.
- Assuming one template proves compliance: template-specific headers and content wrappers can change the result.
Maintenance checklist for theme updates
Recheck the skip link after changing the header, navigation, CSS utility classes, block templates, accessibility plugins or JavaScript bundles. A compact release checklist is:
- Inspect the first focusable element on each public template.
- Confirm the link’s visible focus style in light and dark header states and at mobile widths.
- Verify one unique main landmark and a matching destination ID or generated block-theme target.
- Activate the link and confirm that the next Tab enters the main content.
- Check pages with no content, long archive lists, search results and 404 messages, where wrappers are often different.
- Repeat after cache or minification changes, since reordered scripts and CSS can alter focus behavior.
A skip link is a small piece of markup, but its success depends on source order, landmark structure, CSS, focus management and template coverage working together. Treat it as a site-wide interaction rather than a decoration on one page.
