How to Add Silence to a Video in an FFmpeg YouTube Stream

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To add a silent audio track, create one with FFmpeg’s anullsrc input, then explicitly map that audio alongside the video. For a finite output file, this is a useful starting point:

ffmpeg -i input.mp4
  -f lavfi -i anullsrc=r=44100:cl=stereo
  -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0
  -c:v copy -c:a aac -shortest output.mp4

The first input (0) is the video; the second (1) generates silence. The maps select the first video stream and the generated audio stream. This command creates a file, not a complete live YouTube output; a live command also needs protocol-specific output settings and a destination.

What the command does

anullsrc generates silent audio. Its r=44100 option sets the sample rate to 44.1 kHz, and cl=stereo requests a stereo channel layout. FFmpeg’s stream-selection documentation explains how -map selects streams, including streams from separate inputs; the anullsrc filter reference documents the null audio source and its options.

  • -i input.mp4 opens the video as input 0.
  • -f lavfi -i anullsrc=r=44100:cl=stereo adds the generated silent source as input 1.
  • -map 0:v:0 selects the first video stream from input 0.
  • -map 1:a:0 selects the first audio stream from input 1. Explicit mapping avoids relying on automatic stream selection.
  • -c:v copy copies the video without re-encoding it; -c:a aac encodes the generated audio as AAC.
  • -shortest ends this finite file when the video ends, rather than allowing the silent source to keep the output going.

Check the command against your installed FFmpeg build, chosen container, and intended output. The example’s output.mp4 is a muxed file; it is not by itself a YouTube live-stream command.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Adapt the stream mapping to your source

Video has no audio

Use the two explicit maps shown above: 0:v:0 for the video and 1:a:0 for generated silence. If FFmpeg says no audio stream was selected, verify that the silent source is input 1 and that the map points to 1:a:0.

Replace existing audio with silence

Keep -map 0:v:0 -map 1:a:0 and do not map an audio stream from input 0. That sends the original video with the generated silent track, excluding the source audio. Mapping both original and generated audio can create multiple audio streams, which may cause YouTube ingest problems.

Keep the silent track finite

For a file workflow, -shortest is one way to stop at the end of the finite video. Alternatively, bound the output with an explicit duration suited to the task. Do not copy this finite-file command unchanged into a long-running live workflow: its duration behavior and output settings need to match that workflow.

Meet the requirements for your YouTube ingest protocol

RTMP or RTMPS

YouTube’s encoder settings guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio for RTMP/RTMPS. For stereo, it recommends 44.1 kHz and 128 kbps; these are YouTube recommendations, not defaults guaranteed by FFmpeg. The file example encodes AAC but does not specify an audio bitrate or configure a live destination. YouTube recommends RTMPS for secure transmission.

YouTube’s live streaming error guidance says to provide one audio stream when ingest has none and warns that multiple audio streams can cause ingest problems. Send only the intended track.

HLS

Do not treat an MP4 output or RTMP/RTMPS settings as an HLS recipe. YouTube’s HLS ingestion documentation specifies muxed audio and video in M2TS and AAC audio, along with protocol-specific transport and segment requirements. Follow that HLS guidance when configuring an HLS output.

Verify the output before going live

  1. Inspect the output with ffprobe or another media inspector. Confirm it contains the intended video stream and exactly one audio stream.
  2. Test the complete live configuration in YouTube Live Control Room and check stream health before starting the intended broadcast.
  3. Listen to or otherwise verify the test output: a silent track should be present, but should contain no audible program audio.

YouTube Help advises: “Make sure to test before you start your live stream. Tests should include audio and movement in the video similar to what you’ll be doing in the stream.”

Troubleshoot common failures

  • FFmpeg reports no audio stream was selected: Check input numbering and maps. In the example, the generated source is the second input, so its audio is 1:a:0.
  • The output includes the original sound: Remove any map for input 0 audio. Map only the desired video and the generated silent audio.
  • The output does not stop: In a finite file workflow, bound the silence with -shortest or a suitable explicit duration. Do not apply file-ending options blindly to a long-running live output.
  • YouTube reports an audio or ingest error: Check the selected protocol, audio codec, sample rate, and number of audio streams against the protocol-specific YouTube guidance. For HLS, also check its M2TS and segment requirements.
  • The file looks correct but the live stream fails: A valid file does not establish that the live destination, transport, or encoder settings are correct. Test the full live configuration in YouTube Live Control Room.

Or let it run in the cloud

If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube stream of uploaded videos, StreamNeo is an alternative to running FFmpeg on a computer: upload a recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. The cloud keeps it running, so nothing has to stay on at home. Each slot streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one flat price per slot; it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. Monthly access is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo plays uploaded video to YouTube; it is not a camera-live service. See StreamNeo or start the free day.
