A low monthly price can cost more in practice if the server’s outbound-transfer allowance is too small. First set your stream’s resolution, frame rate and bitrate, calculate its monthly data use, then compare the full checkout cost—including region, tax, IPv4 and overage.
At YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p30, 14 Mbps, a nonstop stream sends about 4.54 TB of video payload in 30 days, before protocol overhead. That calculation alone rules out several low-transfer plans as a fit for those settings.
How much bandwidth does a 24/7 YouTube livestream use?
Bitrate is the main driver. At a constant bitrate, estimate monthly video payload with this formula, using decimal gigabytes:
Mbps × seconds streamed ÷ 8,000 = GB
For a 30-day month, use 2,592,000 seconds. YouTube recommends 14 Mbps for H.264 at 1080p30, which works out to about 4,536 GB, or 4.54 TB, of video payload. This is a calculation from the recommended bitrate, not a provider statistic; it excludes protocol overhead and other server traffic.

- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
YouTube’s recommended H.264 bitrate for 1080p60 is 17 Mbps, so use the exact row for your intended resolution and frame rate rather than assuming all 1080p streams use the same bandwidth. YouTube’s full encoder settings are at Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
- Add headroom for protocol overhead and any other outbound traffic from the VPS.
- Check whether the provider’s allowance is outbound transfer, whether it uses decimal TB or binary TiB, and what excess transfer costs.
- Recalculate if you change bitrate, stream hours, resolution or frame rate. A stream that runs fewer than 24 hours daily uses less data.
Which VPS plans look cheapest, and what do the figures mean?
The available provider figures are dated reference prices, not current quotes or a ranking of the cheapest VPS in India. StreamNeo’s comparison, published 26 July 2026 and updated 19 September 2026, cites these examples as prices from July 2026:

| Provider and example plan | Transfer allowance | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| DigitalOcean Basic Droplet, US$4 | 500 GiB | Far below the estimated 4.54 TB monthly payload for a constant 14 Mbps stream. |
| DigitalOcean plan, US$12 | 2,000 GiB | Still below that estimate before overhead. |
| Amazon Lightsail Linux bundle, US$7 | 2 TB | Also below the estimate before overhead. |
| Hetzner CX23, €5.49/month | Not stated in the cited comparison | Example region: Germany or Finland; IPv4 and VAT are additional. It is not an India-region comparison. |
These examples show why sticker price is not enough: each needs to be checked against your stream’s calculated transfer requirement. The comparison warns that region, tax, IPv4, exchange rates and excess-transfer charges can change the bill. See StreamNeo’s dated comparison of 24/7 YouTube streaming costs for its stated assumptions.
India-specific evidence does not establish a current all-in winner. Plex Scale’s page surfaced a Mumbai starter offer displaying ₹399/month, 2 vCPU, 8 GB RAM, 80 GB NVMe and 3 TB bandwidth, but the same result also displayed ₹549/month. Confirm the billing basis, current offer and checkout total before relying on either figure at Plex Scale VPS Hosting. Compare the full cost, not just the monthly headline
- Monthly outbound-transfer allowance and the cost or throttling policy after it is exceeded.
- Region, taxes, IPv4 charges and billing currency or exchange-rate effects.
- Whether the advertised price is recurring, promotional or conditional, and the cancellation terms.
- CPU and memory appropriate to your workflow, plus the time you will spend monitoring and recovering the stream.
Will FFmpeg copy the video or re-encode it?
This choice changes the server workload. If the uploaded file’s video and audio codecs are compatible with the YouTube stream you want to send, FFmpeg can loop the file in copy mode, passing the encoded streams through instead of encoding them again. That can reduce CPU demand. If you re-encode, CPU requirements depend on the input, output settings and encoding workload.
No benchmarked minimum VPS size is established here. Do not assume a particular vCPU or RAM configuration will handle every file or encoding setting. Test your own stream and monitor both server load and YouTube’s stream health. A VPS that is adequate for copy mode may not be adequate for real-time re-encoding.

Set up a self-managed VPS stream with FFmpeg
The exact installation commands depend on the VPS operating system and how FFmpeg is packaged, so verify them for the operating system you choose. The streaming settings below follow YouTube’s guidance; select the bitrate row for your actual target rather than copying a setting intended for another resolution or frame rate.
- Choose a VPS and verify its allowance. Before ordering, confirm the region, recurring price, outbound transfer, overage policy, tax and IPv4 cost. Compare the allowance with your calculated monthly payload plus headroom.
- Install FFmpeg and upload a compatible media file. Confirm the file’s codecs and that it can be read by FFmpeg. If you plan to re-encode, account for the additional compute load rather than relying on a copy-mode estimate.
- Enable YouTube Live and obtain a stream key. In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go live and use the stream settings to obtain the stream URL and stream key. Treat the key like a password: do not publish it, commit it to a repository or share it in logs. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update the sender.
- Configure the stream to YouTube’s baseline. YouTube recommends RTMPS, constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval (not over four seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio. The guide lists H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1, with frame rates up to 60 fps. Use the bitrate for the specific codec, resolution and frame rate in YouTube’s encoder settings.
- Test before relying on the loop. Start a private or unlisted test, use similar audio and movement to the intended stream, and monitor YouTube’s stream health. Check that the video and audio are present, the bitrate is steady and the connection remains healthy.
- Keep FFmpeg running after disconnects. Run it under a process supervisor or service manager appropriate to your operating system, and configure restart behavior. Test what happens when FFmpeg exits or the network connection drops; a VPS does not remove the need to monitor recovery.
- Review the stream and content regularly. Check YouTube Studio for stream-health warnings and confirm the loop has not stopped. You are responsible for having the rights to stream the video and audio. A 24/7 format does not exempt a channel from YouTube’s copyright rules or monetization policies on reused content.
For a truly continuous stream, calculate bandwidth for the actual number of streaming days in the billing period, not merely a typical month. If a plan offers less transfer than the calculation requires, do not assume that a low CPU load or small file size will solve the egress shortfall.

What can go wrong with a VPS stream?
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check or do |
|---|---|---|
| The stream stops before month-end or the provider warns about usage | Outbound transfer allowance is exhausted or nearly exhausted. | Compare actual provider usage with the bitrate-based estimate; include overhead and check overage or throttling terms before choosing a plan. |
| YouTube reports a poor or unstable connection | Insufficient or inconsistent upload capacity, incorrect encoder settings, or network congestion. | Check YouTube stream health, confirm CBR and the bitrate for the selected output, and test from the chosen VPS region. |
| The server CPU is saturated | FFmpeg is re-encoding, or the chosen encoding settings exceed the server’s capacity. | Check whether copy mode is possible for the source codecs; if not, test the intended encode settings and resize the server based on observed load. |
| Video plays but audio is missing or invalid | Unsupported or incorrectly configured audio stream. | Inspect the source and output audio codec and use an audio format supported by YouTube, such as AAC or MP3. |
| The stream does not reconnect after a process or connection failure | FFmpeg or the service manager lacks restart/recovery behavior, or the stream key/URL is invalid. | Verify the key in YouTube Studio, inspect service logs, configure restart behavior, and test recovery deliberately. |
| The final VPS invoice exceeds the advertised price | Tax, IPv4, exchange rate, regional pricing or excess-transfer charges were not included in the headline. | Review the checkout breakdown and provider terms for the chosen region and billing period before committing. |
Should you use a managed service instead of a VPS?
A self-managed VPS gives you control over the server and FFmpeg configuration, but you handle setup, monitoring, recovery and bandwidth planning. Managed continuous-streaming services trade that server administration for a service fee. These are different options: a managed service is not a VPS rental.
- StreamNeo — first option to consider for less server administration. It keeps an uploaded video or playlist streaming to YouTube from the cloud, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream; any quality up to 4K 60fps is included at one flat price per slot, and the first day is free. See StreamNeo.
- StreamSetu — another managed cloud-streaming option. Its pricing page advertises 1080p streaming per channel and automatic reconnect, with prepaid daily, weekly, monthly and yearly plans. The listed prices are subject to 18% GST; verify current prices, storage charges, destination/channel definitions and recovery terms at StreamSetu pricing.
Claims about features and service terms above are provider statements, not independent performance tests. Compare the current service terms, quality limits, storage, recovery behavior and billing details before choosing.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you would rather not maintain a VPS, FFmpeg process or home computer, StreamNeo keeps an uploaded video or playlist running on YouTube from the cloud. The setup is three steps:
- Upload a recording or build a playlist.
- Add your YouTube stream key once.
- Go live; StreamNeo loops the upload from its cloud service.
Nothing has to stay on at home. Every quality up to 4K 60fps costs the same per slot, and StreamNeo automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card required; after that, the Monthly plan is $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for YouTube and uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. India customers can pay by UPI or card; card checkout is available worldwide. Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, and StreamNeo team support; the same product is on every plan, with only the billing length changing. See StreamNeo plans or start the free first day.
