Add scene transitions in your streaming encoder, such as OBS Studio or Streamlabs Desktop—not in YouTube Live Control Room. Create your scenes, choose a transition and duration, then test the switch before going live. YouTube manages the broadcast; the encoder controls how one scene changes to the next.
Set up scene transitions in OBS Studio
OBS scenes are layouts made from sources such as a game capture, webcam, images, or media. Build the scenes you need, then choose how OBS should move between them.

- Create your scenes. In OBS, add separate scenes for the parts of your broadcast—for example, an opening, main content, break, and ending. Add and arrange the sources for each scene.
- Choose a transition. Find the Scene Transitions section and select a transition. OBS provides Cut and Fade from first launch; additional built-in choices include Swipe, Slide, Fade to Color, and Luma Wipe. See the OBS transition documentation for the controls and options.
- Set its duration. Adjust the duration in the transition controls. The right length depends on the content and pacing; there is no universally ideal setting. Try the change with your scenes before using it on air.
- Switch scenes. Select a scene to change to it. For a more controlled workflow, enable Studio Mode: the live scene stays on air while you prepare another scene in the edit area. Click Transition when you are ready to make the prepared scene live. You can also set up Quick Transitions or hotkeys. Viewers cannot see whether Studio Mode is enabled.
- Test the full change. Check that the intended sources appear, that the transition looks right, and that any hotkey or Quick Transition you plan to use selects the correct scene.
Choose a transition that fits the scene change
| Transition | What it does | Useful when |
|---|---|---|
| Cut | Switches immediately. | You want a direct change without an animated transition. |
| Fade | Changes gradually. | You want a softer visual change between scenes. |
| Swipe or Slide | Uses a directional movement between scenes. | You want a more visible movement as the layout changes. |
| Fade to Color or Luma Wipe | Uses a color or wipe effect during the change. | You want an alternative to a direct cut or fade. |
These are stylistic choices, not documented ways to improve retention or engagement. Consider how noticeable the change should be, how long it takes, whether you need to preview the next scene, and whether a button or hotkey suits your operation.

Use Quick Transitions for repeatable switches
OBS Quick Transitions let you make a configured transition, including its duration, available while using Studio Mode. You can set up more than one Quick Transition with different durations if different scene changes need different pacing.

Add a Motion transition in Streamlabs Desktop
Streamlabs Desktop documents a Motion transition for animating shared sources as scenes change. To add one:
- Open the Scene Transition menu.
- Choose Add Transition.
- Select Motion as the transition type.
- Set the duration and acceleration to control how long the movement takes and how it speeds up or slows down.
A source present in both scenes animates from its position in one scene to its position in the other. A source present in only one scene zooms in or out. What YouTube Live Control Room does—and does not do
Use YouTube Studio’s Go live flow and Live Control Room to create or manage your broadcast. Configure scene changes in your encoder, such as OBS or Streamlabs Desktop. YouTube’s live options, including horizontal and vertical streaming, do not replace the encoder’s scene-transition controls. See YouTube’s live-streaming help.
