Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →On GNU systems, the exact command rm -rf / is normally stopped by GNU Coreutils’ built-in --preserve-root default. For an extra interactive safeguard in ordinary shell use, add GNU rm -I: it asks once before a recursive removal or a removal of more than three files. Neither safeguard makes every destructive command safe, and the details below apply specifically to GNU Coreutils—not every system’s rm.
What happens when you run rm -rf /?
GNU Coreutils rm enables --preserve-root by default. It refuses recursive removal of the root directory, /; the GNU manual describes the behavior as: “Fail upon any attempt to remove the root directory, /, when used with the --recursive option.” The option --no-preserve-root disables this protection, so do not add it to a safety alias or function. This is a narrow guard, not a general confirmation prompt or a universal guarantee. Check the documentation for the rm implementation on your system before relying on GNU-specific behavior. POSIX also specifies protections for operands resolving to /, . and .., but that does not establish identical behavior for every implementation or option combination. The Open Group: POSIX rm utility

| Option | What it prompts for | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
--preserve-root |
GNU rm refuses recursive removal of /. |
Already the GNU default; protects this specific target, not other important paths. |
-I |
Prompts once before a recursive removal or when removing more than three files. | One confirmation for potentially broad work, with less interruption than prompting for every file. |
-i |
Prompts before each removal. | More deliberate, but can become cumbersome for multi-file operations. |
safe-rm |
A wrapper can refuse removal of configured protected paths. | Configurable, but has path and invocation limitations; it is not a substitute for careful command review. |
The prompt rules for -I and -i are documented by GNU Coreutils. GNU Coreutils 9.11: rm invocation

Add a prompt to interactive GNU rm
For routine interactive shell use, make GNU rm default to -I while retaining its root protection:
alias rm='rm -I --preserve-root'

That line is an example for shells that support POSIX-style aliases; it is not a universal startup-file recipe. Put it in the startup file actually read by your interactive shell, following that shell’s documentation. After changing it, start a new interactive session or load the relevant startup file, then inspect rm with your shell’s command-inspection facility to confirm the alias is active.

An alias changes how a command is expanded in applicable interactive contexts. It is not an unbypassable system policy: scripts, other shells, explicit paths to executables, and shell-specific alias rules can behave differently. Review destructive commands in scripts separately rather than assuming this interactive setting protects them.

When a protected-path wrapper helps—and where it fails
Debian’s safe-rm is a wrapper designed to block removal of configured paths. It can add exclusions beyond GNU rm’s special treatment of /. Read its manual for installation and configuration details before using it: Debian testing: safe-rm(1).
A protected directory name does not necessarily protect its contents from every route. The manual warns that changing into a protected directory and then using a wildcard to remove its contents can bypass the path exclusion. A wrapper also only helps where commands actually pass through it; it does not make all removal tools or invocation contexts safe.

Wildcards and filenames need their own safeguards
Deletion risks are not limited to the root directory. Shell wildcards are expanded before rm receives its arguments, and a matched filename beginning with a dash can be interpreted as an option. ShellCheck recommends disambiguating wildcard matches by prefixing them with ./, or using -- to mark the end of options where appropriate. ShellCheck SC2035

For example, use rm -- ./-draft rather than passing a dash-leading filename ambiguously. The -- ends option parsing; ./ makes the operand visibly a path. Neither approach verifies that the target is the one you intended, so inspect broad wildcard expansions before deleting.

Use the right guard for the job
- Want a lower-friction interactive check? Use GNU
rm -Iin the relevant interactive shell context. - Want a prompt for every file? Use GNU
rm -i, accepting the extra confirmations. - Need to block particular paths? Consider a configured wrapper such as Debian
safe-rm, while accounting for its documented exclusions limitation. - Cleaning a mounted tree or chroot? GNU
--one-file-systemcan keep recursive removal from crossing onto another filesystem. It cannot help when the mounted areas share the same filesystem, and it is not a general safeguard against accidental deletion. GNU Coreutils 9.11: rm invocation
For commands that can erase data, keep the guard matched to the risk: the root-specific default blocks one dangerous target, while prompts and path wrappers address different situations. None should be treated as a backup or as a guarantee that a destructive command is harmless.
