You can add camera layouts, graphics, labels, alerts and scene changes to a live stream with software such as OBS Studio—no hardware video switcher required. Build scenes from separate sources, arrange the layers, then use transitions, Studio Mode or hotkeys to control what viewers see. A green screen is needed only if you want to remove a camera background with chroma key.
What software can do instead of a video switcher
A production application such as OBS Studio combines separately managed inputs into scenes. A scene might show a camera with a name label, a screen share with a logo, or a break graphic with chat. You can prepare multiple layouts and switch between them from the software.

The official OBS documentation describes these capabilities, but does not establish that a software setup performs better than hardware in CPU use or latency; those depend on the specific equipment and configuration.

1. Plan a few repeatable scenes
Start with a small set of scenes for the moments in your show. For example, create Welcome, Main, Break and End. OBS’s overview guide also illustrates scene types such as Desktop and Game. Keeping layouts distinct makes it easier to choose the right composition without rebuilding it during the broadcast.

2. Add the sources each scene needs
In the Sources dock, select the plus button and choose the appropriate source type. OBS documents browser, image, text, media, video-capture, display-capture and audio sources. A video-capture source can bring in a webcam; display capture can show your screen. An image source works for a logo or frame, while a text source can add a name or label.
Use a browser source for a web overlay such as an alert or chat widget. OBS’s sources guide describes browser sources as a way to display web pages, including stream alert overlays and chat boxes. The OBS browser-source project also documents the browser component: OBS browser source documentation.

3. Arrange and control the layers
In the Sources list, items higher in the order appear above lower items. Reorder sources to control which graphic sits in front, then position and resize them in the preview. Crop a source when you want to show only part of it. Use the visibility control beside a source to hide or show it without removing it from the scene.

For example, place a camera below a name graphic so the label remains visible, or hide a browser overlay when you no longer want it on screen. Static images and text are suited to fixed artwork and labels; a browser source is the better fit for content that comes from a web page.
4. Change scenes without exposing edits
OBS Studio’s Studio Mode lets you work on a scene in a preview while the current scene remains on the live output. When the new composition is ready, transition it to the output. OBS documents built-in cut and fade transitions, along with options such as swipe, slide, fade to color and luma wipe.

Hotkeys can switch directly to a particular scene or show and hide sources. Use a scene transition when the whole layout should change; use a visibility toggle or source hotkey when only one element—such as a logo or alert—needs to appear or disappear. 5. Test the composition before broadcasting
Check that each scene contains the intended sources, that graphics are positioned correctly, and that scene changes behave as expected. OBS recommends testing scenes, settings and stream smoothness before the first live broadcast so configuration or performance problems can be found ahead of time. The guide does not prescribe one set of settings for every computer or production, so verify the result on your own setup.

Another way to work with overlays
Streamlabs documents several overlay workflows: install an overlay from its library, import an existing overlay file, or build scenes manually and add image files as sources. It also documents transferring an overlay into OBS by importing a Streamlabs scene collection; that route does not require a Streamlabs plugin. Library contents and product features can change, so check the current application screens and help material. See Streamlabs’ overlay instructions.
When a green screen is actually needed
A green screen is optional equipment for one specific effect: removing the camera background with chroma key. OBS says to add a webcam as a Video Capture Source, then position and resize it or apply a Chroma Key filter to remove a greenscreen. A backdrop is not needed for text, static graphics, browser widgets or scene transitions. Read OBS’s webcam guidance before setting up that effect. If you choose this camera-background approach, a green screen backdrop kit is the relevant type of physical item.
