To upload selected pictures, open Dropbox on your iPad, choose the destination folder, tap + → Upload Photos, select the pictures, set the location, and tap Upload. For ongoing backup instead, enable Camera uploads in the Dropbox app.
Upload selected photos to Dropbox
- Open the Dropbox app on your iPad and sign in.
- Open the Dropbox folder where you want the pictures saved.
- Tap the + button at the bottom of the screen, then choose Upload Photos.
- Select the photos you want to upload.
- Tap Next, choose the Dropbox folder, and tap Set location.
- Tap Upload.
Dropbox says files uploaded this way sync wherever you access your Dropbox account. The documented labels or button placement may vary by app version; if your screen differs, look for the closest matching upload option. Dropbox’s mobile upload instructions describe the process.

Choose manual upload or automatic Camera uploads
| Workflow | Best for | Control and requirements |
|---|---|---|
| Manual upload | Adding chosen photos to a chosen folder | Select the pictures and destination for each upload. |
| Camera uploads | Ongoing backup of camera photos and videos | Requires photo-library access and turning on the setting. You can choose whether uploads use cellular data. |
Turn on Camera uploads
- Open the Dropbox app and tap the account icon.
- Tap Camera uploads.
- Tap Upload from, then Settings, and allow access to photos and videos.
- Choose what to back up and whether to use cellular data.

Camera uploads is optional; it is different from manually selecting photos and choosing a destination folder. If you want to avoid using mobile data, disable the cellular-data option during setup. See Dropbox’s Camera uploads instructions for the documented iOS setup.

Dropbox documents an overnight-upload option for large amounts of camera photos or videos on iOS. In the Dropbox app, tap the camera icon and start overnight uploads. Keep Dropbox open, connect the iPad to Wi-Fi, and plug it into a charger while the upload runs; this process is not documented as continuing with the app closed. Upload Live Photos and choose image formats
Live Photos
Dropbox’s iOS app supports uploading Live Photos. Depending on the upload option, you can retain the Live Photo or save it as a still image; a HEIC Live Photo can also be saved as JPG. Details are in Dropbox’s Live Photos instructions.
HEIC photos and HEVC videos
Dropbox says it supports HEIF (.heic) photos and HEVC-encoded MOV videos. Camera uploads can be set to save HEIF/HEVC files as JPG or non-HEVC MOV instead. Dropbox notes that JPG may be more compatible for people without Apple devices, but conversion removes some HEIF features. A changed conversion setting applies to future uploads, not files already uploaded. See Dropbox’s format and conversion guidance.
