You can add a right-click Extract shortcut for CAB files in Windows 11 with a Registry Editor file, or remove that shortcut by deleting its registry key. The community-published recipe below offers two behaviors: extract into a folder named after the CAB file, or extract there and open the folder automatically. This is optional; Windows also provides built-in ways to extract CAB contents without changing the context menu.
What the CAB Extract menu change does
ElevenForum’s tutorial says CAB files do not have an Extract context-menu item by default. Its registry recipe adds a command that creates a folder beside the CAB file, names it after the file, and extracts the CAB contents into it. The alternate command opens that folder in File Explorer when extraction finishes. ElevenForum’s instructions are a community tutorial, not a Microsoft-endorsed customization.

The change is made under HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCABFolderShellExtract. According to the tutorial, you need to be signed in as an administrator to merge the registry file. Review the file contents and consider backing up the relevant registry state before applying it.

Add an Extract option to the CAB context menu
Choose one of the two variants. Both use the expand command shown in the ElevenForum recipe and create a same-named output folder next to the CAB file.

Choose the behavior you want
For a menu item that extracts without opening the destination folder, use this registry content:
Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00
[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOTCABFolderShellExtractCommand]
@="cmd /c for %%I in (\"%1\") do (mkdir \"%%~dpnI\" & expand \"%1\" -F:* \"%%~dpnI\")"
To open the output folder automatically, use the alternate content instead:

@="cmd /c for %%I in (\"%1\") do (mkdir \"%%~dpnI\" 2>nul & expand \"%1\" -F:* \"%%~dpnI\" & explorer \"%%~dpnI\")"
Save and merge the registry file
- Copy only the chosen variant into a plain-text file.
- Save the file with a
.regextension. - If Smart App Control requires it, unblock the saved file.
- Double-click the
.regfile and approve the prompts to merge it. The tutorial says to perform this while signed in as an administrator.
These excerpts reproduce the commands on the tutorial page; they are not independently tested here. If the custom command does not behave as expected, you can remove the added menu entry using the procedure below.

Remove the custom Extract menu item
The tutorial’s removal recipe deletes the key containing the custom entry. Save the following as a .reg file, then double-click it and approve the merge prompts:

Extract a CAB without changing the context menu
The context-menu shortcut is optional. Microsoft documents CAB extraction through extract/Extrac32 and lists Windows 11 as an applicable operating system. Its documentation covers listing a cabinet’s contents, extracting all files or selected files, choosing an output directory, and controlling overwrite prompts. On Windows 10 and newer, Microsoft says Extract.exe is not provided or supported and is replaced by Extrac32.exe; consult the Microsoft command reference for the documented syntax and options.

The community menu recipe uses expand ... -F:*; Microsoft’s cited command reference documents extract/Extrac32. The Microsoft page supports the availability of CAB extraction, but it does not verify this particular context-menu command.

Windows 11 context menus can be extended by apps. Microsoft’s 2021 explanation of context-menu extensions says Show more options loads the Windows 10 context menu for low-use shell verbs and apps still porting their integrations. That post does not analyze this CAB registry recipe, so it does not establish where the added item will appear across Windows 11 builds.
The community tutorial labels its steps for Windows 10 and Windows 11 but does not provide a Windows 11 build-by-build test matrix. Separately, Microsoft’s archive-support page says Windows 11 version 24H2 supports ZIP, RAR, 7z, and TAR; that statement concerns those formats and does not describe a change to CAB menu customization. Microsoft’s archive support information should not be read as a claim that CAB extraction requires this tweak.
