How to Add or Remove “Run as administrator” from the Windows 11 Context Menu

The Run as administrator command may already be under Show more options. If it is missing, use the community registry recipe cautiously and back up the relevant key first.

First check Show more options: Windows 11 may already show Run as administrator in the older context menu. If it is missing, an ElevenForum community tutorial provides registry files intended to add or remove the entry, but Microsoft’s documentation does not verify that specific recipe. Back up the relevant registry key before applying any third-party .reg file.

Check the full context menu first

Right-click the relevant executable or shortcut in File Explorer and select Show more options. Microsoft says this menu exposes older shell commands and extensions that may not appear in the streamlined Windows 11 menu. Its explanation is in the Windows 11 design article, published July 19, 2021; Microsoft Support also directs users to Show more options for some older extensions in its File Explorer guidance.

  • To open the selected item’s context menu with the keyboard, press Shift+F10.
  • To open the older menu directly, use Shift+right-click.

These shortcuts are listed in Microsoft’s Windows keyboard shortcuts reference. If the command appears in the older menu, no registry change is needed.

Use the community registry recipe only if the entry is missing

The closest source located for adding or removing this specific command is an ElevenForum tutorial. It provides add/remove .reg files and describes the change for Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is community guidance, not a Microsoft-published or Microsoft-validated procedure; Microsoft’s general registry documentation does not confirm the tutorial’s particular registry paths, values, or behavior on every Windows 11 build.

Before using a file, confirm that its instructions cover the item type you want to change, such as an executable or shortcut. Open the .reg file in a text editor and inspect the keys and values it will change. Do not import a file you cannot identify or trust.

Back up the registry before making a change

Microsoft warns that incorrectly changing the registry can cause serious problems, including instability, application issues, or Windows failing to start. Its registry backup and restore instructions explain how to export a key and import a saved backup.

  1. Open Registry Editor and navigate to the key the tutorial says it will change.
  2. Select that key, then choose File > Export. Save the export somewhere you can find it, and keep it as a rollback copy.
  3. Only after checking the .reg file and saving the backup, use the tutorial’s add or remove file as appropriate. Importing a .reg file changes registry keys and values.
  4. Return to File Explorer and inspect the relevant context menu to see whether the entry changed. The cited recipe does not establish that restarting Explorer or Windows is required for every current build.

Microsoft’s .reg file documentation describes the file mechanism in general; it is not an endorsement or safety check for a particular downloaded registry file.

Consider ShellRunas only for a different need

Microsoft Sysinternals offers ShellRunas, a separate utility that can register its own shell context-menu entry. Its /reg option registers that entry, and /unreg unregisters it. ShellRunas is not the same as restoring or removing the built-in Run as administrator verb, so it is not a direct substitute for the ElevenForum registry recipe.
