Gmail’s category tabs help you triage email faster by splitting the Inbox into sections like Primary, Promotions, and Social. When you add or remove tabs, Gmail changes how it groups incoming messages—not your email addresses or accounts.
This guide shows the exact steps to control category tabs in Gmail Web, plus what to do when the option is missing, disabled, or doesn’t behave as expected.

What Gmail category tabs are (and what they aren’t)
Category tabs are Inbox sections that Gmail uses to automatically classify messages. Common tabs include Primary, Promotions, Social, Updates, and Forums.

What tabs don’t do: they don’t permanently delete or archive mail, and they aren’t the same thing as manual labels or filters.
Before you change tabs: quick prerequisites
- Use Gmail Web (desktop or mobile browser). Most category tab controls are located in Gmail Settings.
- Be logged into the correct Google account in your browser.
- If you use Google Workspace (work/school email), your administrator may manage inbox settings.
If you’re on a managed account and the setting won’t change, skip to the troubleshooting section.
Add or remove category tabs on Gmail Web
Open Gmail settings and reach the Inbox type controls
- Go to Gmail and sign in.
- In the top-right corner, click Settings (gear icon).
- Select See all settings.
Once you’re on the full Settings page, look for the Inbox section.
Choose which tabs you want
- In the Inbox section, find the Inbox type option.
- Select Default or Categories.
- If you pick Categories, you should see checkboxes for categories/tabs.
- Check or uncheck the categories you want to show as tabs (commonly: Primary, Promotions, Social, Updates, Forums).
When you uncheck a category, Gmail stops showing that section as a tab and instead routes those messages into Primary or a non-tab area depending on classification.
Save and verify
- Scroll to the bottom of the Settings page.
- Click Save Changes.
- Return to your Inbox and confirm the tab row updates.
Existing messages may take a moment to re-categorize in the UI. If you don’t see changes immediately, refresh the page and wait 1–2 minutes.
What if tabs are missing or grayed out?
When category tabs won’t appear, it’s usually one of four things: your Inbox type isn’t set to Categories, your setup restricts certain controls, an admin policy overrides settings, or you’re viewing a different inbox layout.
1) Your Inbox type isn’t set to Tabs
Check Settings → See all settings → Inbox → Inbox type. If it’s set to Default, Gmail won’t show category tabs. Switch it to Categories and then select the tabs you want.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2) Gmail can’t show certain tabs in your setup
Some accounts don’t present the same category checkbox list. If you only see a subset of tabs, use the available categories list and save. You can also verify the tab row by reloading the inbox after saving.
3) Workspace or admin policies override settings
If your email is managed (Google Workspace), an administrator may restrict inbox configuration. Indicators include:
- The Categories radio option is missing.
- The category checkboxes are disabled.
- Changes revert after you reload or after a short time.
In this case, ask your admin which inbox features are allowed. You may need them to update policy for Gmail inbox categories.
4) You’re using a different inbox view
Gmail sometimes appears different if you’re using a custom view, search results view, or filters that hide the tab row. Make sure you’re on the main Inbox (not a saved search) and that you’re not in a “read” or “focus” mode view.
How adding/removing tabs affects labels and filtering
Category tabs are driven by Gmail’s classification, but they interact with labels behind the scenes. The most important practical effect is this: when you hide a tab, you’re changing how the Inbox UI groups messages—not the underlying existence of your mail.
If you use automation (filters, forwarding, or third-party tools), be aware that some workflows rely on labels like Promotions or Social. Removing a tab can change which messages you notice first, even if the labels are still present.
Mobile apps: do category tabs settings change on iPhone or Android?
What you can control on the apps
Gmail’s iOS app and Android app generally don’t provide the same full category tab editor as Gmail Web. You can usually manage notifications, inbox type choices (sometimes), and label behavior, but the most reliable control is still in Gmail Web.

What still requires Gmail Web
To reliably add or remove the actual category tabs, use Gmail Web on a browser. After you change settings on the web, the mobile app typically reflects the updated inbox structure when you sign back in or refresh the inbox view.

Recreate a clean view if the inbox looks wrong
If you changed tabs and the inbox feels inconsistent (messages missing, the wrong tab filled, or the tab row appears but classification seems off), use this reset-style workflow.
Reset your inbox tabs to defaults
- Go to Settings → See all settings.
- Set Inbox type to Default.
- Click Save Changes.
- Go back and set Inbox type to Categories.
- Re-check the categories you want.
- Click Save Changes again.
This forces Gmail to rebuild the inbox UI grouping for your current classification rules.
Check label visibility
If the category tabs are enabled but you don’t see expected sections, verify that related labels aren’t hidden in the left sidebar. Labels can be toggled independently from tabs in some views.
Review filters that might be interfering
If you have Gmail filters that apply labels or routing rules, they can override how messages appear in the Inbox. Common scenario: a filter applies skip inbox or a label that moves mail out of expected categories.

Common mistakes
- Changing the wrong setting: only the Inbox type and its category checkboxes control the tab row in Gmail’s UI.
- Expecting instant retroactive changes: some messages may take time to reclassify visually.
- Assuming filters are off: existing filters can route messages away from categories regardless of tab visibility.
- Trying to fix it on mobile only: for most users, Gmail Web is the authoritative place to configure tabs.
Quick comparisons: Categories vs labels vs filters
| Feature | What it changes | Where you configure it | Typical use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Category tabs | Inbox UI grouping (e.g., Promotions tab) | Gmail Web: Settings → Inbox → Inbox type | Quick triage |
| Labels | Tagging that persists across views | Gmail Web: label settings and message actions | Organization and searching |
| Filters | Automated routing (labeling, inbox skipping, forwarding) | Gmail Web: Filters and Blocked Addresses | Automation |
FAQ
Can I remove the Promotions tab but keep Promotions labeled?
Yes. Removing the Promotions tab controls whether it appears as an Inbox section. Promotions labeling can still exist behind the scenes, but the messages may land in a different Inbox grouping you’ll see under your remaining tabs.

Why do my emails go to the wrong tab after I change categories?
Gmail’s classification isn’t instant. Also, if you have filters or rules that label or route messages, they can affect which tab you see. Wait a few minutes and then test by sending yourself a fresh email.
My category checkboxes are missing. What should I do?
Open Settings → See all settings → Inbox and confirm that Inbox type is set to Categories. If the option still doesn’t appear, your account may be managed by a Google Workspace admin.

Will changing tabs on the web update Gmail on iPhone or Android?
Usually yes. The mobile apps typically reflect the Gmail Inbox configuration you set on the web. If it doesn’t update right away, sign out and sign back in or refresh the app inbox.
Do category tabs affect email delivery?
No. Category tabs only change how Gmail displays and groups incoming messages in your inbox view. Delivery and the actual contents of your email are unchanged.
Bottom Line
Adding or removing Gmail category tabs is mostly a matter of switching Inbox type to Categories and checking or unchecking the category boxes in Gmail Web. Hit Save Changes and then refresh your Inbox to confirm the tab row updates.
If the controls are missing or changes won’t stick, the two most common causes are a non-Categories Inbox type or Google Workspace admin restrictions. When that happens, focus on the Settings path first, then validate admin policy and any active filters.
