Add Open Graph tags in the document <head>. Use fixed tags in your HTML template for a site-wide preview, or keep metadata with each Vue Router route and update the head when that route is active. If previews must be present in the first HTML response, use server-side rendering (SSR) or static-site generation (SSG) as appropriate.
Which Open Graph tags should a Vue page have?
The Open Graph Protocol identifies four required properties for an object: og:title, og:type, og:image, and og:url. Put them in the page’s HTML <head> as <meta> elements. og:url is the permanent identifier for the object; use the page’s canonical, absolute URL. og:image should point to an image representing that page. og:description is optional in the protocol but generally useful: it summarizes the object in one or two sentences. When an image is present, provide og:image:alt with a description of what the image shows. This alt value describes the image, rather than serving as a caption. The protocol also defines structured image properties: og:image:secure_url, og:image:type, og:image:width, and og:image:height. The protocol does not establish one universal recommended image dimension.

If all pages can share the same preview values, add the metadata to the HTML template that provides your application document. Put it inside <head>, replacing the example values with the actual page title, canonical URL, image URL, and description.
#1 Best Overall
<meta property="og:title" content="Example page title">
<meta property="og:type" content="website">
<meta property="og:url" content="https://example.com/page">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/images/page-preview.jpg">
<meta property="og:description" content="A short summary of this page.">
<meta property="og:image:alt" content="Description of the preview image">
This approach is simple, but a shared template cannot supply different values for every route unless another mechanism updates or renders the head.
Set different tags for Vue Router pages
Vue Router route records accept arbitrary meta fields. The matched route exposes route.meta, a non-recursive merge of parent and child route metadata. Names such as ogTitle and ogImage below are application conventions; Vue Router does not turn them into Open Graph tags automatically. Vue Router: Route Meta Fields
const routes = [
{
path: '/articles/example',
component: ArticlePage,
meta: {
ogTitle: 'Example article',
ogDescription: 'A short article summary.',
ogImage: 'https://example.com/images/example.jpg',
ogUrl: 'https://example.com/articles/example',
ogType: 'article',
},
},
]
Connect these values to a head-management mechanism or a small route-aware update. For each navigation, set the active route’s values on the corresponding <meta property="og:..."> elements. Replace the previous route’s values rather than appending new tags; otherwise the head can contain duplicates or stale metadata. Include the canonical URL and an image URL that is publicly fetchable by the services that need to retrieve them.

Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Choose when the metadata is rendered
The key decision is whether the correct metadata needs to appear in the initial HTML response or can be added after the browser loads the app. Choose based on when route content becomes available and how the application is built.
| Approach | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Shared HTML template | All pages can use the same values, or per-route previews are unnecessary. | By itself, one template does not provide route-specific metadata. |
| Client-side route update | Metadata depends on the active route and the app updates the document head in the browser. | Verify the rendered HTML and the services you care about; behavior varies, and the cited framework documentation does not establish which preview crawlers execute client-side Vue code. |
| Server-side rendering (SSR) | Metadata depends on request-time or asynchronously fetched content and needs to be included in server-rendered HTML. | Requires server rendering and its associated setup. Vue notes SSR may be necessary when asynchronously fetched content matters for SEO. Vue: Server-Side Rendering |
| Static-site generation (SSG) or prerendering | Page content and metadata are known at build time and do not vary between requests. | Generated output reflects build-time data; changes may require another build. Vue describes SSG as generating static HTML ahead of time. Vue: Server-Side Rendering |
Vue’s quick-start recommends using a framework when SSR is needed; for a simpler setup where SSR is unnecessary, it describes Vite as an option. Vue: Quick Start
Check the actual HTML output
Do not rely only on component state or what the browser displays after JavaScript runs. Inspect the rendered page output for the target URL and confirm that its <head> contains one correct set of Open Graph values. Check that og:url is the intended absolute canonical URL and that og:image points to an image that can be fetched publicly. There is no universal platform-specific crawler or preview-cache guarantee established here, so check the services relevant to your site rather than assuming all of them render client-side metadata the same way.
Or skip the browser setup
To capture a rendered page for checking its appearance, ScreenshotNeo offers a one-call screenshot API. It is not a replacement for adding Open Graph metadata or verifying the page’s HTML head.

ScreenshotNeo accepts cookie and consent banners before capture and removes more than 60 known consent platforms, newsletter popups, and chat widgets; each step can be turned off. Bot checks and CAPTCHAs, blank pages, timeouts, failed loads, and cache hits are not billed, and responses identify page verdict and billing status in headers. Its MCP server provides screenshot tools for AI agents. The free plan includes 1,000 shots per month with no card; paid plans start at $5 for 3,000 shots.
