First check whether your Blogger theme already outputs Open Graph tags. If it does, supply a useful post title, Search Description and image, then verify the rendered page; if not, add conditional tags to the theme’s HTML so post metadata appears on individual post pages rather than across every page type.
Check whether your Blogger theme already has Open Graph tags
Open the public post and inspect its HTML source, focusing on the document’s <head> for properties such as og:title, og:type, og:url, og:description and og:image. Confirm that the values are appropriate for that specific post, not just present.

Blogger Community Product Expert irsah wrote in an October 13, 2023 answer that Open Graph metadata is already deployed on default Blogger themes, especially newer responsive themes such as Soho and Contempo. Treat this as a reason to check first, not a guarantee: theme versions and customizations differ. If suitable tags are already present, do not add another competing set.
Prepare the post’s title, description and image
Open the post in Blogger and make sure its title is set, add a post-specific Search Description, and include an image suitable for sharing. If Search Description is unavailable, check the blog’s settings to enable it. The Product Expert recommended images at least 1200 pixels wide and high; that is community guidance, not a universal platform requirement or a guarantee that every social network will display the image as intended.

Add conditional Open Graph tags if the theme is missing them
Back up or save a recoverable copy of the theme before editing. In Blogger, open the blog’s Theme and choose its HTML editor. Find the document’s <head> and place suitable metadata near the existing metadata, before </head>. Avoid duplicating tags already emitted by the theme.
The following is a Blogger template pattern from a 2013 tutorial, not guaranteed drop-in code for every current theme. Adapt it to the active template and validate it in Blogger’s editor:

- Used Book in Good Condition
<b:if cond='data:blog.pageType == "item"'>
<meta expr:content='data:blog.pageName' property='og:title'/>
<meta content='article' property='og:type'/>
</b:if>
<meta expr:content='data:blog.canonicalUrl' property='og:url'/>
<meta expr:content='data:blog.title' property='og:site_name'/>
<b:if cond='data:blog.metaDescription'>
<meta expr:content='data:blog.metaDescription' property='og:description'/>
</b:if>
<b:if cond='data:blog.postImageThumbnailUrl'>
<meta expr:content='data:blog.postImageThumbnailUrl' property='og:image'/>
</b:if>
The item-page condition limits the title and article type to individual posts. The canonical URL identifies the page, while the conditional description and image tags are emitted only when Blogger has those values. Blogger’s official template reference defines pageType values including item, archive and index, and identifies pageTitle as the title of the current page; its value can include additional information on archive or post pages. Check the active theme’s available data and output rather than assuming every template expression behaves identically.

Preview and verify the rendered result
- Use Blogger’s post preview before publishing or updating.
- Inspect the public post’s rendered HTML head. Confirm there is one intended value for each relevant Open Graph property, and that title, canonical URL, description and image correspond to the post.
- Check the post with the preview or sharing tool of the social platform you care about. Platform display and image handling can differ, so a tag’s presence alone does not guarantee a particular preview.
Troubleshoot missing or incorrect previews
- No Open Graph tags appear: Confirm that the edited theme is the active one, save the changes, and inspect the public page rather than relying only on the template editor.
- Two values appear for a property: The theme may already emit metadata. Remove or adjust the added tag so one suitable value remains.
- The description or image is absent: Add the post’s Search Description and image, then check that the relevant Blogger template value renders on that post.
- Post metadata appears on archive or index pages: Put post-specific title and type tags inside an item-page condition instead of applying them indiscriminately.
- The editor rejects the markup: Blogger templates use XML-like syntax. Check quotation marks, tag closure and conditional syntax against the active theme before saving again.
- A platform still shows an older preview: Recheck the rendered tags and use that platform’s current preview or refresh mechanism; the available guidance does not establish a universal cache-clearing procedure.
Do ordinary Blogger shares require fb:app_id?
The available community guidance does not establish that fb:app_id is universally required for ordinary link sharing. The Product Expert associated it with Meta plugins and reported sharing without it. If your site uses a Meta integration, follow the current documentation for that integration rather than adding the property without a specific need.
