Add nofollow to a text link
- In the post or page editor, select the text you want to link. To change an existing link, select its linked text.
- Open the link control. For a new link, use the link button or press Ctrl+K (⌘+K on Mac), then enter or paste the destination.
- Expand Advanced in the link options.
- Turn on Mark as nofollow, then save or update the post.
For an external website, WordPress recommends entering the complete URL, including https://. Its validation checks the URL’s formatting, not whether the destination exists or loads. The control labels and options can vary with the selected block. See WordPress’s Link control documentation (updated September 6, 2026).

Add nofollow to a button or navigation link
These links use controls specific to their blocks rather than the standard text-link Advanced panel.

WordPress lists nofollow, noopener, and noreferrer as examples of relation values for a Button link. The Navigation control specifies how the external link relates to the page being edited.

Set nofollow in custom HTML
If you are editing markup directly, add the relation to the anchor element:
<a href="https://example.com" rel="nofollow">link text</a>
The Custom HTML block accepts HTML, but permissions matter: users without the unfiltered_html capability may have content sanitized, and disallowed markup can be removed when a post is saved or updated. Do not assume arbitrary markup will be preserved for every account.
What the nofollow setting does—and does not establish
The setting adds a nofollow relation to the link. WordPress documents how to apply it, but the control documentation does not guarantee a particular crawling or search-ranking outcome. Use the editor surface that matches the link: the standard Link control for text, the block-specific relation setting for buttons or navigation links, or HTML when direct markup editing is appropriate.
