To add minicopter mods, run a modded Rust server with either Oxide/uMod or Carbon, install a plugin that matches the job you need, edit the JSON file it creates in the framework’s config directory, grant narrowly scoped permissions, then reload and test. Use Mini-Copter Options for flight physics and attachments, Manage Mini for player ownership and commands, and Spawn Heli for controlled spawning, cooldowns, and fuel policies. Do not install overlapping fuel systems without checking their hooks.
Godlike.Host offers hosted Rust servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Choose the right minicopter plugin first
Minicopter features are easier to maintain when each plugin has one clear responsibility. Installing several plugins that all alter fuel, spawning, or ownership can create conflicting hooks and permissions. The practical split is:

| Plugin | Best for | Configuration or permission focus |
|---|---|---|
| Mini-Copter Options | Vehicle behavior and attachments | Fuel consumption, lift, pitch/yaw/roll torque, storage containers, auto-turrets, searchlights, tail lights, and flyhack-pause behavior. Configuration file: config/MiniCopterOptions.json. |
| Manage Mini | Player-facing ownership and management | Commands such as /makemini, /takemini, /getmini, /authPilot, /unauthpilot, /minidetails, and /upgrademini, plus permissions for spawning, retrieval, pilot authorization, upgrades, and fuel-rate profiles. |
| Spawn Heli | Controlled spawning and economy rules | Spawn and fetch controls, cooldown tiers, per-player fuel profiles, unlimited-fuel permissions, and one-helicopter policies. |
Facepunch’s community-server guidance supports servers that use plugins or mods. Oxide/uMod and Carbon are separate frameworks, so install a plugin only when its current documentation says it supports the framework and Rust build you are running.
Prerequisites and a safe change plan
Confirm the server framework
Before downloading anything, determine whether the server is running Oxide/uMod or Carbon. The plugin file, configuration path, permission system, and reload command depend on that framework. Carbon documents a carbon.reload hot-reload command; use the current Carbon syntax for the specific plugin. For Oxide/uMod, use the reload method documented by the installed plugin and framework version rather than copying a command from an older Rust update.

Back up before installing or editing
- Stop the server cleanly or use the host’s supported backup process.
- Copy the entire server instance, especially the framework’s
config, oxideor Carbon data, and plugin directories. - Save each existing plugin JSON file separately before changing it.
- Record the Rust build, framework version, plugin version, and the date of the change in the server runbook.
A backup matters because Rust updates can change entity behavior or plugin APIs. It also lets you restore a known-good configuration when a malformed JSON file prevents a plugin from loading.
Use a JSON validator
Open the generated file in an editor that validates JSON. Preserve the exact key names, capitalization, commas, braces, and nesting created by the plugin. Change one group at a time—fuel, movement, attachments, then permissions and cooldowns—so a failure has an obvious cause. Do not paste a complete configuration from another server: plugin versions can add, remove, or rename settings.

- Choose one framework. Confirm Oxide/uMod or Carbon and check the plugin page for the current Rust-update notes.
- Install only the plugin that supplies the feature. For example, install Mini-Copter Options for physics changes, Manage Mini for ownership commands, or Spawn Heli for cooldown-based spawning.
- Start the server once. Most plugins create their configuration file after loading. For Mini-Copter Options, look for
config/MiniCopterOptions.json; other plugins create their own JSON files in the framework’s config directory. - Stop or safely pause changes before editing. Make a copy of the newly generated file, then edit the original with a JSON-aware editor.
- Validate and save. A missing comma or extra brace can stop the plugin from loading. Keep the original key order and any comments or explanatory fields supplied by the plugin.
- Reload the plugin. Use the framework’s documented reload command. Carbon’s documented hot-reload command is
carbon.reload; verify the current syntax before running it on a live server. - Test with a controlled group. Check a fresh minicopter and an existing one, fuel consumption, starting behavior, storage or turret attachments, ownership, and permission boundaries.
- Document the result. Record the final JSON, plugin versions, permissions, and any non-default values so the setup can be reproduced after a wipe or Rust update.
Configure vehicle behavior with Mini-Copter Options
Mini-Copter Options is the appropriate layer for physical behavior. Its documented example values are configuration values, not independent performance tests. Treat them as a starting point, then verify the generated file for your installed version.
| Setting | Documented example | What changing it does |
|---|---|---|
Fuel per Second |
0.5 |
Sets the ongoing fuel consumption rate. Lower values extend flight time; zero stops ongoing consumption but does not remove the client-side start requirement described below. |
Lift Fraction |
0.25 |
Changes the fraction used for lift behavior. Test carefully because flight feel and control difficulty change together. |
Pitch Torque Scale |
400.0 |
Scales forward and backward rotational force. |
Yaw Torque Scale |
400.0 |
Scales left and right rotation. |
Roll Torque Scale |
200.0 |
Scales banking force. |
| Storage container counts | 0 by default |
Controls whether additional storage containers are attached. Keep the generated key names and set each supported count deliberately. |
| Auto-turret options | Optional | Enables and configures supported auto-turret behavior. Confirm balance and ammunition rules before enabling it on a competitive server. |
| Searchlight and tail-light options | Optional | Adds or changes lighting attachments and their behavior. |
| Flyhack-pause handling | Optional | Controls the plugin’s interaction with flyhack detection pauses. Test with the server’s anti-cheat settings rather than assuming a setting is safe for every build. |
Fuel set to zero still needs a starting unit
The plugin documentation states that setting fuel per second to 0 stops ongoing fuel use. The Rust client still requires at least one fuel unit in the tank to start the minicopter. Therefore, “zero fuel consumption” is not the same as a completely empty tank: keep one unit available whenever players report that a supposedly unlimited or free-fuel minicopter will not start.

Do not run competing fuel systems blindly
Mini-Copter Options exposes the OnMiniCopterOptions and OnMinicopterFuelPerSecChange hooks. Other plugins that alter fuel should use those hooks or another documented compatibility mechanism. Two systems writing fuel values independently can leave a spawned minicopter hard or impossible to fly.
Give players ownership tools with Manage Mini
Manage Mini is designed for player-facing management rather than low-level flight physics. Its documented commands are:
| Command | Purpose |
|---|---|
/makemini |
Create or claim a minicopter through the plugin’s ownership flow. |
/takemini |
Take ownership or bring a minicopter under the player’s management. |
/getmini |
Retrieve a managed minicopter. |
/authPilot |
Authorize a pilot. |
/unauthpilot |
Remove a pilot authorization. |
/minidetails |
Display details for the managed minicopter. |
/upgrademini |
Apply an available minicopter upgrade. |
Grant only the Manage Mini permissions required for your server’s groups. The plugin documents separate permission capabilities for spawning, retrieving, authorizing pilots, upgrades, and unlimited or random fuel rates. Keep administrative permissions out of ordinary player groups, and test each command while logged in as a real player rather than an administrator.
Interpret the example Manage Mini values correctly
The plugin’s example configuration includes FuelRate: 0.25, FuelRateUnlimited: 0.0001, miniStartHealth: 750.0, a nominal spawn distance of five metres, and wait times of 10 seconds, 21,600 seconds, 43,200 seconds, and 86,400 seconds for its permission tiers. These are plugin example defaults, not universal recommendations. Convert the waits to your server’s progression only after checking the generated file and the current plugin version.

A practical rollout is to give new players the longest wait or no spawning permission, reserve shorter waits for trusted groups, and keep unlimited or random fuel as an explicit privilege. Test whether retrieval, authorization, and upgrade permissions are independent in your version before combining them in one group.
Control spawning and cooldowns with Spawn Heli
Choose Spawn Heli when the central problem is who may spawn or fetch a minicopter, how often they may do it, and which fuel profile applies. Its current permission namespace includes:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
spawnheli.minicopter.spawn— permits minicopter spawning.spawnheli.minicopter.unlimitedfuel— grants the unlimited-fuel profile.spawnheli.minicopter.cooldown.spawn.1hr— example of a one-hour spawn cooldown tier.
Additional cooldown permissions follow the plugin’s documented naming pattern. Select one tier per player group instead of granting several competing tiers, then verify which tier wins in your installed version. Spawn Heli also supports per-player fuel profiles, controlled fetching, and one-helicopter policies. A one-helicopter rule is useful on busy servers because it prevents every player from leaving multiple aircraft scattered across monuments and roads.
Balance fuel and cooldowns together
Unlimited fuel with a short cooldown can make air travel effectively permanent, while a long cooldown with a high fuel rate can make the feature frustrating. Decide which resource should limit use—time, fuel, or the number of active aircraft—and grant permissions accordingly. Give spawnheli.minicopter.unlimitedfuel only to groups that are intentionally exempt from fuel limits. For everyone else, use a defined fuel profile and a cooldown tier.

Design permissions without accidental escalation
Permissions are the main balancing controls for player-spawned minicopters. Build groups by capability, not by plugin name:
- Basic transport: no unlimited fuel, a long spawn cooldown, and only the minimum ownership or retrieval capability.
- Trusted players: a shorter cooldown and pilot authorization if your rules allow shared aircraft.
- Builders or event staff: retrieval, upgrades, or a special fuel profile when those privileges are needed for an event.
- Administrators: full management only for staff who need it; do not use administrator status as a substitute for testing ordinary player permissions.
After every plugin update, audit the permission list. Spawn Heli documents migration from older SpawnMini permission names, so a server that upgraded from an earlier release can retain obsolete grants or silently lose intended access. Remove old names, add the current namespace, and test each group from a non-admin account.
Reload and test in a controlled sequence
- Validate the JSON and make a second backup of the edited file.
- Reload only the changed plugin, using the current framework command.
- Watch the server console for parse errors, missing dependencies, or hook conflicts.
- Spawn a new minicopter and verify the expected fuel rate, lift, torque, and attachments.
- Put at least one fuel unit in the tank and confirm that the engine starts, including when the ongoing fuel rate is zero.
- Test an existing minicopter to see whether the change affects entities already in the world.
- Log in as each permission group and test spawning, retrieval, pilot authorization, upgrades, cooldown messages, and fuel restrictions.
- Restart the server during a maintenance window and repeat one smoke test; a setting that works only until restart is not a successful deployment.
Troubleshoot the failures players usually see
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Plugin does not load | Framework mismatch, outdated Rust API, missing dependency, or malformed JSON. | Restore the backup, check the plugin’s current Rust-update notes, validate the file, and install a release compatible with your framework. |
| Changes have no effect | Wrong config path, wrong key or nesting, or no reload. | Edit the generated file in the framework’s config directory, preserve exact key names, validate, and reload the specific plugin. |
| Fuel rate is zero but the minicopter will not start | The client-side start check still requires one fuel unit. | Place at least one fuel unit in the tank; zero only stops ongoing consumption. |
| Aircraft becomes difficult or impossible to fly | Two plugins are writing fuel or minicopter values without using compatible hooks. | Temporarily disable the competing system, then configure it to use OnMiniCopterOptions or OnMinicopterFuelPerSecChange where supported. |
| Players can spawn but cannot retrieve or authorize pilots | The relevant Manage Mini capability was not granted. | Review the plugin’s separate permissions for spawning, retrieval, pilot authorization, and upgrades; test each one independently. |
| Cooldown appears wrong | Several cooldown permissions were granted or an old permission name remains. | Keep one current Spawn Heli cooldown tier per group and audit migrated SpawnMini names. |
| Storage, turret, or light attachments are missing | Attachment counts are still at their documented default of zero or optional features are disabled. | Enable the specific generated settings, then test inventory, ammunition, lighting, and entity cleanup. |
Keep the setup reproducible after wipes and updates
Rust server wipes and game updates are easier when the minicopter setup is treated as configuration rather than a one-time tweak. Keep a runbook containing:
- Framework name and version.
- Rust build and wipe date.
- Plugin names and exact versions.
- Backed-up JSON files, with a note identifying intentional departures from defaults.
- Permission groups, current Spawn Heli cooldown names, and any migrated legacy names removed.
- Hook dependencies and a list of other plugins that modify vehicles or fuel.
- A short smoke-test checklist covering startup, fuel, flight, ownership, cooldowns, and attachments.
After a Rust update, do not assume a previously working plugin is still compatible. Read the plugin’s update notes, install on a staging instance when possible, reload one plugin at a time, and test with ordinary player permissions before reopening the server.
Best Value
Example server policies
Casual cooperative server
Use Mini-Copter Options with moderate fuel consumption and default torque, then give players Manage Mini ownership and retrieval permissions. Use Spawn Heli with a long cooldown so aircraft remain useful without filling the map. Keep unlimited fuel limited to event staff or a clearly announced special group.
Recommended Free Tools
Competitive or high-population server
Keep storage and offensive attachments disabled unless they are part of the ruleset. Use Spawn Heli’s one-helicopter policy and explicit cooldown tiers to control map clutter. Require pilot authorization through Manage Mini, and test anti-cheat or flyhack-pause behavior before changing it.
Testing or event server
Use a separate permission group for event operators. Give that group the shortest documented wait, upgrade access, and any required fuel profile, while leaving ordinary player groups unchanged. Revoke the event permissions after the event instead of editing the global configuration repeatedly.
